Bet Her Hair Doesn’t get Frizzy. She’s HAUTE.

Makelle. Marin County, California. Mom. Therapist. April 2017.

It’s Spring time, and parents are outside. Makelle was taking her daughter to a puppet show, outside in the perfect LA ‘like’ weather. We both chatted about feeling like it’s hard to accomplish much in a day, especially with little kids – showering is an accomplishment.

Personally, I’ve been having a hard time getting dressed, I think I forgot how to look stylish when it’s hot… the vision of my pale legs, scared me out of wearing cutoff’s. When I finally got my confidence back, one of my kids asked me to please not wear “those shorts” as they are “so embarrassing”.  Because I’m so psychologically healthy (ha), I needed to know why the embarrassment, Is it because I look bad in them? Or good? After a brief interrogation, I was left with zero information regarding the mystery of why my cutoffs embarrass this kid.

DSC_0023

This denim jumper looks incredible on Makelle- I hope she realizes how good she looks in this – DAMN!!!

Makelle has a look I could never relate to at all – she’s tiny, blonde and her hair never frizzes.  She can show her bra, without looking Va Va Voom- like some people I know (me).

She can probably pull off a Free People loose sun dress, ya know the ones that are so confusing to try on? You can’t figure out how your nipples won’t show and/or how anyone can wear this fabric tied together with string, without some fat sticking out…I’ll bet that Makelle is one of the few who can rock that look.

Makelle even has stylin’ tattoos, when I think of a triangle, I think of many interpretations of this symbol – from Gay rights to the Holocaust to femininity.  I love the way this simple ink looks on her arm, it’s like having a permanent accessory, and you always look a little hip, ya know?

eDrop-Off & Haute Drop-Off Unite in Aspen

DSC_0050

Corri McFadden. Mom. Wife. Fashion Innovator. Aspen. August 2016.

CORRI: Obviously, I saw this stylish mom and asked to take her photograph for Haute Drop-Off. With an automatic yes, and a natural ability to casually pose – I quickly knew Corri wasn’t an amateur. As we talked between shots, I learned that Corri is founder of the on line designer luxury consignment shop, eDROP-OFF. The company successful in its own right, was made famous by the VH-1 show House of Consignment, which documented Corri’s everyday challenges and successes growing eDROP-OFF into the company it is today, http://shopedropoff.com

eDROP-OFF has been featured in Women’s Wear Daily, InStyle, Marie Claire, People, and Elle, along with national television programs including The Today Show and Entertainment Tonight.

DESIGNER BAGS & UNSOLICITED ADVICE: As weird as it may seem, since I was a little kid – I had a passion, which was rummaging through old clothes, closets and junk. The first time I entered a Salvation Army, I decided it was so much more amazing than any Toys-r-Us. As I got older, my love for rummaging grew and became more sophisticated, I began to rummage through my Grandmothers and their friend’s closets – especially the ones with vintage Gucci. I still have a vintage Gucci mini-trunk my Grandmother’s best friend Mildred gave to me – I’m pretty sure I begged her, after I found it deep in the belly of her large Miami closet. I also think this was the same day Mildred and my Grandmother gave me unsolicited advice along with my vintage designer trunk, “Mara, keep two legs in one stocking”.

So learning how Corri created a fashion empire based on her rummaging through women’s closets and re-selling their unused things – is pretty much an amazing reality, especially for someone like me.

Corri and her equally charming husband took their daughter to the Ducky Derby in Aspen, where thousands of rubber ducks are emptied into an Aspen river – all to raise money for local charities. Since having Zelda, Corri has created a mother/daughter blog, glitterandbubbles.com, a resource for just about everything for today’s modern mamas. Corri features “rad moms” and her daughter Zelda has all of us captivated, living through her childhood experiences, all with a great sense of fashion (thanks to very stylish parents).

Parisians think Brooklyn Style is HAUTE

DSC_0091

Thomas Palauqui. Marin Country Mart. Marin County. February 2016.

Is Thomas from Brooklyn or Paris? It’s unclear, and I’m onto something here. Parisian men are influenced by Brooklyn style, and do it well.. the American urban style mixed with Parisian tailoring is an alluring combination. Thomas is dressed quite casually, but he’s given his look some thought…and yes, he’s French.

Vogue wrote about Brooklyn’s street style and its influence on Parisian men…. http://www.vogue.com/13354833/paris-brooklyn-men-street-style/

DSC_0093

Thomas is General Manager of Monsieur Benjamin, http://www.monsieurbenjamin.com a modern Parisian restaurant and bar in San Francisco.

DSC_0090

Thomas isn’t wearing any French designers, he’s in American designs -but Thomas puts them together in a very French manner. From the collar up to his chic diaper bag (aka man diaper bag).

Fashion Notes: Jean Jacket: GAP 1969, Pants & Sweater: J.Crew, Kicks: New Balance, Sunglasses: Ray Ban

DSC_0094

See guys, you don’t always have to hem your pants..they look cool a little loose…

DSC_0097

I always love a pair of old school New Balance sneakers..it’s a good option, if you are confused which sneakers to buy..always go simple.

Haute Malibu. Actor-Surfer-Cowboy-Cool Dad at Drop-Off.

unnamed-6Rodger Halston. Dad. Actor. Malibu, California. December 2014.

Fashion Notes: Rodger, Shoes: Clarks, Jeans: Levis, Flannel: Abercrombie, Vest: One Star, Sunglasses: Ray Ban. Avalon, Kicks: Converse, Jeans: Joe’s Jeans, Vest: Pop Out, Tank Top and Back Pack: Roxy

About: Rodger and family live in Malibu, where he takes advantage of the California life style.  His talents are abundant…. Actor, Musician, Singer, Surfer, Skateboarder, Cowboy, Writer, Producer, Director, Motivational Speaker and DAD.  I don’t know what it means to be a cowboy, but it sounds pretty fun.

Hair: I mean can this dad get any cooler? Rodger is a great looking dude, with major style and an awesome beard.  I have this beard style philosophy  – it can’t be neat or overly trimmed. A beard I like, is more free spirited in its presentation.  A little messy and unruly, but only slightly…Rodger has perfected my beard ideal. The long, straight hair reminds me of late 70’s folk rock hair…it just fits this dad well, and man is he lucky!

Style: I love the fitted vest with a little plaid peaking though – -and the thick wrist cuff.  A great example for men on how to wear accessories. The rolled sleeve is a great way to add some masculinity to any look – especially when its plaid.

Film: Below is a photo of Rodger from his upcoming Universal Pictures film, Scorpion King Quest for Power.  Check out this stylin’ dad in his new film coming out in January.

Betsey. Playboy. Paris. Models. Famed Photographer. Haute.

Bronwyn Chovel. Paris, France. July 2014. Mom. Model. Artist Rep.

Fashion Notes: Dress: Besty Johnson, Sandals: Purchased in Greece, Sunglasses: Ray Ban. Bronwyn’s little girl is wearing a hand smocked cotton dress.

Bronwyn is not Parisian – she actually hails from Miami, and now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Bronwyn has been modeling for years, and currently with all her experience as a client, is representing artists.  One of her clients is famed photographer, Greg Lotus who currently shot the cover of the August Playboy. Greg’s work can be seen in Vogue, W, Vanity Fair, Out etc.. Bronwyn is surrounded by the creative, after being in the fashion industry modeling for years – – – I want to hang out with Bronwyn and Greg for a few hours!!

I spotted Bronwyn (even though we had been connected through several people) at a famed Mill Valley spot, The Sweetwater Music Hall.  It was a week day morning, and a beautiful, chic and sophisticated woman sat sipping coffee at the bar.  Bronwyn has that I’m “somebody” model look, but not in an offensive way – because it’s all unintentional.  Bronwyn is sweet, kind and hails from a family filled with loving, fun people –

Now back to Bronwyn’s dress – – -Betsey Johnson and I have been best friends for years, ever since I would sift through her sales basket in her Coconut Grove Store (which has been closed for years).  I’m lying, but in my imagination Betsey and I were great friends.  She did cart wheels at the end of all her runway shows, and I once exchanged words with her cool daughter, Lulu when I was living in NYC working in fashion.

My passion for Betsey was formed early in my fashion development.  I actually wore a Betsey Johnson plaid, punk looking dress to every Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Quinceanera and debutante coming out party  -remember I grew up in Miami, we had lots of parties from the age of 12-16.  I knew most of the salespeople in the Miami store, only because I felt it was okay to hang around the store as it were a contemporary art museum…looking, but not purchasing any of the great works.

The women in the Miami store were gorgeous – after all, it was Miami.  They weren’t totally hip, like their Colombus Avenue counterparts.  But Miami salespeople, made Betsey Johnson clothing damn sexy..and as inappropriate as it sounds now, that 11 year old child wanted to look just like them.  I promised myself, I would one day work at Betsey Johnson.

Betsey’s clothing was a combination of funky, sexy, cool and didn’t follow any particular seasonal trend.  Even at 11, I could spot a Betsey Johnson garment – – she stuck to her fashion ideals, and continued to be unique.  I never did get that job at BetseyJohnson, but always appreciate how her clothing somehow, made me feel passionate and excited to be a part of the crazy, artistic world of fashion – – even if her stores didn’t take returns (store credit).

I know Betsey still does cartwheels at the end of all her runway shows – -She makes fashion fun and lighthearted – – As is should be. Here’s a shot of Bronwyn is the ocean – looking chic in a black bikini and you can peak at her discreet tattoo.
