I Keep on Truckin’ in Door Knockers & Chanel

DSC_0037

April 2017. Somewhere in California…..Keep on Truckin’

Love the patches, especially since I now live in Grateful Dead country, and that’s an original patch – little did anyone know, it would be worn with stilettos and a large classic Chanel bag.

This 70’s jean jacket was hiding in between two vintage hawaiian shirts at the vintage flea market in Oakland. You would think I won the lottery, I was so excited – – -and for $70.00, it was mine. Oversized, original patches, perfect color and rips in all the right places – I landed on vintage denim perfection. Sunglass are from Madewell, www.madewell.com

These amazing door knockers are personalized with my name – from Melody Ehsani, https://melodyehsani.com and my chandelier earrings are from Neiman Marcus by Oscar de la Renta

My heels are from the Off Fifth, the Saks Fifth Avenue outlet store – they were maybe $20. The sun dress was also a random and very inexpensive find. Most people, would say it’s really a top!! The bag, Chanel – not inexpensive, but I like to think of it as an “investment” piece, investment in my style 🙂

The oversized jean jacket, makes a mini-dress seem more comfortable. I can wear it open or hide behind the bagginess.

Seeeeee I can hide under this huge jacket!

After this Post, I know I look better in Skinny Jeans

DSC_0111

I call this my Neil Diamond jacket. When I wear it, I get a lot of stares. Some people don’t know what to say because it’s so loud, so Las Vegas. Here’s how I take a jacket that may be considered tacky, and make it ultra-cool (well, in my opinion). It’s vintage, I say late 70’s, maybe 80’s.  I’ve worn this to school drop-off and nearly tripped down the driveway, bell bottoms and wedges take serious walking skills.

DSC_0124

I’m a lover of a denim suit, all different shades and years, from new to old. Shredded tank is from Intermix, www.intermix.com High waisted pants, can be flattering when you want to show a sliver of skin – no one can tell if the skin is flabby, it’s an eye trick.

DSC_0113

Learn from my mistakes, wear higher heels with bell bottoms or hem them. I’m lazy and unless someone comes to my house to hem my clothing, I never do it – or I wait until I have an event the next day, and I’m in desperate mode. Wide leg/bell bottoms are from Free People, www.freepeople.com

DSC_0134

This clutch was a gift from my mom’s friend, most likely from the 70’s. I see them all over these days – grab them when you see them at flea markets or Goodwill.

DSC_0125

Even though I have long legs, skinny jeans look better on me. I love a flattering pair of bell bottoms, but sometimes I feel like it’s too much – almost like I’m wearing a costume. That’s why mixing this Neil Diamond like jacket, makes this look less costume party and more about personal style – or maybe I’m just cheesy!!

DSC_0131

I’m thinking I should make these cut offs, kind of loving how these Free People jeans fit from behind. Not because I look so great, but the way the butt is designed, makes it flattering for most bodies. As you girls know, this is not always the case when trying on jeans. Any jeans that are baggy and comfortable, make your butt look non-existent – believe me, I know – I’m wearing a pair now.

Man Bags can be so Haute…

dsc_0076

Ethan. Marin County, California. October 2016.

Fine, Ethan is an artist, a professor, drives an old school VW van, has a beard, grew up in Kenya and pulls off a man bag beautifully…but don’t feel bad guys – you can do it too – even if you grew up in suburban Ohio, I believe in all of you, I really do.

Ethan’s handmade woven basket bag was a gift from his family who live in Nairobi, Kenya, where Ethan spent part of his childhood. These bags can be purchased on line, try to find a website where the crafters live in Africa and are making the money directly.

High top Vans will always remind me of cool skater kids… and they haven’t lost that nostalgia, or style.

dsc_0075

This is style – Van high tops paired with a handmade Kenyan basket bag.

Why seeing your “Peeps” makes Drop-Off feel like Home..

Eli. San Rafael, California. October 2016.

dsc_0043

I admit to spotting Eli and his family, and getting excited to see my people in Marin County. It’s not like LA or NYC where running into Jews wearing kippahs and tzi tzi is common. I know many cultures can relate to seeing your peeps, and giving them the “what up” head lift or the wave. I took it a step further, and actually walked up to this crew. One, because they looked so LA, and two because they were at my kid’s school faire, and I hardly see a full Jew, let alone observant ones – so I had to walk over, and do the awkward so….

dsc_0055

Eli and Leah live in LA, and Leah has a fashion blog, redlipsandrose.com It’s a tradition for Orthodox Jewish women who are married to cover their hair -I love how Leah uses a cool scarf, creating a funky East Village vibe.

dsc_0051

Such a stylin’ crew – LA is so present in their casual, but cool stye.

dsc_0063

Leah making that Apple watch ever so fashionable and bling worthy.

dsc_0046

Leah is my kind of girl – the Adidas soccer slides paired with leggings, aviators and a hair wrap – she has that Cali street style – as moms of young kids know, you need to be ready to run and be spontaneous, Leah manages to have her own style, while being able to be a hands on mama.

Love the hat on this kid…

Beautiful family.

Is she wearing Burberry?

It’s all about the Hair. perfect beach hair, wavy with honey highlights.

unnamed-6

He’s so cute!!

unnamed-9

Always make sure those cutoff’s fit well – – like here on Edith, I need to be better with the fit-  I get them short and too baggy in the booty.

My “grass roots” Drop-Off Style (when I’m not in leggings)

dsc_0061

Me. September 2016. Marin County. Shots by T. Palmer.

I’m not smiling in these (okay, I’m making that semi-weird lip expression), it was the first run & I’m a little rusty and a lot self conscious  – I warm up in the photos you’ll see in a few weeks.  Although, I will admit to feeling like I did a pretty good job pulling together this look from my closet – what? self-validation people!

dsc_0046

This basket weaved leather bag was a great summer purchase – $40.00 from Lola’s in Fairfax, CA – when I wear this bag, I get stopped constantly. My friend Em-J, who’s a very stylin’ twenty-something, surfing, mountain biking woman – has been on a constant search to find this bag, because she knows her friend Mara, has quite the eye for accessories & good prices (I’m kidding, but I do).

The choker is a long chain, made by Shandi Levy Jewelry. Chokers are here for now, and I’m still not sure if they look right on me, because I don’t have the neck of a ballet dancer. This dress is from H&M, and it was very cheap. I impulsively shortened it, by cutting it with scissors and it came out uneven. It was my multi-talented & close friend Barb, who fixed the dress & made it wearable. It looks shredded and low end, but that doesn’t matter to me – accessories are key. The plaid top, also cut by yours truly, (so happy Grunge is back “in”) is by Zara. The gladiator sandals I LOVE, and found on sale at 02 in Aspen this summer. They are by Vince Camuto.

The sandals I guess seem sexy, because I get some “looks” when wearing them. They are totally flat with no heel, which makes them causal and wearable – but I guess the look of them seems out of the box for some…I’ve just been enjoying pairing them with everything in my closet – including the boring, but repeated yoga pant!!

dsc_0044

My nails are long again, they are acrylic and high maintenance. The males in my life think they are awful, but women usually love them. I love them, they elongate your hands and make me feel like I’m related to J.Lo :).

dsc_0048

I really look like I’m trying here….oy vey!

dsc_0053

The only issue with this dress and wearing it to pick up my kids is the wind factor. It’s always windy in Northern California, especially in San Francisco. I walk with my arms attached to my side or make all my bags messenger, to hold my dress down, I would wear dresses every day if it wasn’t windy –

And a close up, sunglasses are on for reasons of vanity…
