I Keep on Truckin’ in Door Knockers & Chanel

DSC_0037

April 2017. Somewhere in California…..Keep on Truckin’

Love the patches, especially since I now live in Grateful Dead country, and that’s an original patch – little did anyone know, it would be worn with stilettos and a large classic Chanel bag.

DSC_0028

This 70’s jean jacket was hiding in between two vintage hawaiian shirts at the vintage flea market in Oakland. You would think I won the lottery, I was so excited – – -and for $70.00, it was mine. Oversized, original patches, perfect color and rips in all the right places – I landed on vintage denim perfection. Sunglass are from Madewell, www.madewell.com

DSC_0032

These amazing door knockers are personalized with my name – from Melody Ehsani, https://melodyehsani.com and my chandelier earrings are from Neiman Marcus by Oscar de la Renta

DSC_0043

My heels are from the Off Fifth, the Saks Fifth Avenue outlet store – they were maybe $20. The sun dress was also a random and very inexpensive find. Most people, would say it’s really a top!! The bag, Chanel – not inexpensive, but I like to think of it as an “investment” piece, investment in my style 🙂

DSC_0058

The oversized jean jacket, makes a mini-dress seem more comfortable. I can wear it open or hide behind the bagginess.

DSC_0021

Seeeeee I can hide under this huge jacket!

Makelle. Marin County, California. Mom. Therapist. April 2017.

It’s Spring time, and parents are outside. Makelle was taking her daughter to a puppet show, outside in the perfect LA ‘like’ weather. We both chatted about feeling like it’s hard to accomplish much in a day, especially with little kids – showering is an accomplishment.

Personally, I’ve been having a hard time getting dressed, I think I forgot how to look stylish when it’s hot… the vision of my pale legs, scared me out of wearing cutoff’s. When I finally got my confidence back, one of my kids asked me to please not wear “those shorts” as they are “so embarrassing”.  Because I’m so psychologically healthy (ha), I needed to know why the embarrassment, Is it because I look bad in them? Or good? After a brief interrogation, I was left with zero information regarding the mystery of why my cutoffs embarrass this kid.

DSC_0023

This denim jumper looks incredible on Makelle- I hope she realizes how good she looks in this – DAMN!!!

Makelle has a look I could never relate to at all – she’s tiny, blonde and her hair never frizzes.  She can show her bra, without looking Va Va Voom- like some people I know (me).

She can probably pull off a Free People loose sun dress, ya know the ones that are so confusing to try on? You can’t figure out how your nipples won’t show and/or how anyone can wear this fabric tied together with string, without some fat sticking out…I’ll bet that Makelle is one of the few who can rock that look.

DSC_0015

DSC_0017

Makelle even has stylin’ tattoos, when I think of a triangle, I think of many interpretations of this symbol – from Gay rights to the Holocaust to femininity.  I love the way this simple ink looks on her arm, it’s like having a permanent accessory, and you always look a little hip, ya know?

Look at the glowing skin – and the LOVE of a mama.

A little Beatles action  – Ray Ban shades, love this shape.

I Only Buy Trail Mix for the M&M’s.

DSC_0023

Ferry Building. San Francisco. February 2017.

I love Patagonia, on kids. Neal had the cutest little Patagonia vest. The vest was a hand me down, it reminded me of Vermont, and rich hippies from liberal colleges in the Northeast. I had a Patagonia jacket in College, a friend from Rhode Island gave it to her Miami friend, to maybe fit in a little more in preppy Boston. I used to wear it on all my plane rides, it kept me warm and I felt like a boarding school kid, who hiked on the weekends, and kept trail mix in my back pack. But the thing is, we all know I’m the person who buys trail mix purely for the M&M’s, it’s not as embarrassing to buy trail mix as it is to buy king size M&M’s.

Currently, I love seeing Patagonia on guys with a John F. Kennedy Jr./Ben Harper style sensibility, who know when to wear a Patagonia jacket and when to opt for a jacket that would look weird on an outdoor trek. You get my point. And If you are going to go with an outdoor brand, Patagonia is a company with integrity and a cool factor.

DSC_0019

This mom’s style is casual and functional. It’s not always about looking like you are prancing down a runway. She’s running after a toddler, and he’s fast.

DSC_0025

Flannels are everywhere, thank you Kurt Cobain..90’s style is everywhere.

DSC_0024

DSC_0011

She’s wearing highlighter are the apples of her cheeks and eyes, this is a hot make-up trend now – I’ve been using RMS Beauty Master Mixer, www.rmsbeauty.com – this product is all natural, created by a veteran make-up artist. You’ll glow!!

After this Post, I know I look better in Skinny Jeans

DSC_0111

I call this my Neil Diamond jacket. When I wear it, I get a lot of stares. Some people don’t know what to say because it’s so loud, so Las Vegas. Here’s how I take a jacket that may be considered tacky, and make it ultra-cool (well, in my opinion). It’s vintage, I say late 70’s, maybe 80’s.  I’ve worn this to school drop-off and nearly tripped down the driveway, bell bottoms and wedges take serious walking skills.

DSC_0124

I’m a lover of a denim suit, all different shades and years, from new to old. Shredded tank is from Intermix, www.intermix.com High waisted pants, can be flattering when you want to show a sliver of skin – no one can tell if the skin is flabby, it’s an eye trick.

DSC_0113

Learn from my mistakes, wear higher heels with bell bottoms or hem them. I’m lazy and unless someone comes to my house to hem my clothing, I never do it – or I wait until I have an event the next day, and I’m in desperate mode. Wide leg/bell bottoms are from Free People, www.freepeople.com

DSC_0134

This clutch was a gift from my mom’s friend, most likely from the 70’s. I see them all over these days – grab them when you see them at flea markets or Goodwill.

DSC_0125

Even though I have long legs, skinny jeans look better on me. I love a flattering pair of bell bottoms, but sometimes I feel like it’s too much – almost like I’m wearing a costume. That’s why mixing this Neil Diamond like jacket, makes this look less costume party and more about personal style – or maybe I’m just cheesy!!

DSC_0131

I’m thinking I should make these cut offs, kind of loving how these Free People jeans fit from behind. Not because I look so great, but the way the butt is designed, makes it flattering for most bodies. As you girls know, this is not always the case when trying on jeans. Any jeans that are baggy and comfortable, make your butt look non-existent – believe me, I know – I’m wearing a pair now.

Women’s March Oakland. Haute Drop-Off.

IMG_0835

firearmsregulated-420x560

I had to take a selfie before taking off to Oakland. If you know me well, you have free reign to poke fun; It seems like I’m attempting to morph into a contrived character out of a Free People catalog, I can see them advertising ‘free spirit protest clothing on sale after January 22′. And what my look says most likely is, “hey, I’m going to a protest, so let me draw a piece sign on my stomach, and wear something bohemian, but still stylish” I get it guys, and I admit it.  BUT when am I ever going to get a chance to draw a peace sign on my stomach and not get punched for it?

The issue is peace signs are so contrived, even if I still love them.  But there is a new symbol taking over, the VULVA. The vulva was the official symbol of the Women’s March. Women dressed as Vulvas, drew them and wore clothing with vulvas as the main theme. I am not great at drawing, so a last minute vulva sketch on my stomach was an impossible task – but know that I will be prepared at the next march.

FASHION NOTES: Plaid top: Zara, Denim, distressed tank: Intermix, Jeans: MOTHER, Moccasins: Minnetonka, Socks: Urban Outfitters

IMG_0735

I ran to CVS in a creepy area near my house, I kept thinking how I’m buying posters to protest for Women’s rights, and I’m nervous that a man is going to attack me in the dark, desolate parking lot. I also thought it very sorority like to buy poster board and sharpees at CVS, it’s good I have terrible handwriting, which always makes me seem legit!!  IMG_0779

My friends Willa and Eric, who happen to be with my family when Trump was elected. We were all horrified, and figured we should march together.

IMG_0741

This is en route to the Oakland march, tons of Police cars and traffic. My friend Eric brought a gorgeous Leica film camera to document the march, he didn’t want to waste any photos on us – – -bastard!!

IMG_0749  IMG_0751 IMG_0752  IMG_0754

This march was filled with mothers and kids, families  – as a mother, I know how hard it is to stand/walk in a crowded place with kids for hours – this is so important for younger generations to participate and witness.

IMG_0758 IMG_0759 IMG_0760 IMG_0761   IMG_0767

My favorite sign, it had such a fashion angle. The signs were exceptional.

IMG_0838

Here I am, holding my sign high and proud – I make so many jokes, but the reality is serious here. I’ve struggled as a woman, like all of us  – but my basic rights have not personally been threatened. I thank the generations of women before me who stood up for equality  -we’re still not there yet – and the President elect has threatened our basic rights, and I’m not going to stand still and be silent. This is not a political issue – this is a human issue. Proud to stand with so many vocal Americans, who refuse to be muted. May we continue to be vocal, fight back and refuse to accept mistreatment, lack of human rights and inequality for all people.

Haute Russian Style circa 1800..

unnamed

Ethan and Elliot. Marin County. January 2017.

Dressed like Russians in the late 1700’s, early 1800’s this crew is getting ready to visit Fort Ross in California to experience Russian history…

unnamed-9

My own child in the middle, he’s wearing my skinny jeans from Zara, which he had to squeeze into and I had to split the ankles with a scissor so he could manage to get them over his ankles. He’s also wearing a cropped military blazer, which fits him much better than me. Yamato on the right is wearing a fur hat and cape from The Salvation Army, pretty fun to create costumes for kids.

unnamed-1

Father and Son. Ethan goes on a lot of field trips, because he is a professional outdoorsman – at least to me – I’m pretty sure he can light a fire with wood and stuff 🙂

unnamed-2

I think Elliot is wearing his mom’s moccasins.

Elliot’s sweater could be from the 1970’s or the 1700’s – not sure??

Miami can be Low Key & Haute

LaToya has no make-up on and looks gorgeous –

I love her low key style on a slightly “cold” Miami day – ya know, it was 77 degrees out!

Top Holiday Toys via eBay/Huffpost

unnamed-8

eBay.com & Thehuffingtonpost.com asked for my top kid gift this holiday season, I sound like a total capitalist, to which I’m not – but most of all, I feel like a true success when I watch my boys play a board game – they focus, read directions and have fun without technology – it’s so validating. I know you moms get it, and dads!!

“Haute Drop-Off blogger Mara Menachem plans to prepare her kids for the business world with the assistance of a classic board game.” Click on the link to read about my holiday toy pick, and other top mom bloggers…

Haute Denim Dad.

dsc_0043

Ryan. Sausalito. December 2016.

Cute dad eating at FISH in Sausalito, 331fish.com, one of my favorite Bay Area lunch spots – bring lots of cash, that’s all they take – and it’s a little pricey or seems pricey when you actually pay with cash – because who uses cash anymore? But it’s delicious, sustainable fish, the highest quality and care go into their food – not to sound pretentious, but you can taste the love and care in each bite.

dsc_0036

Scenes from a “seafood” restaurant…

dsc_0038

Love this kids very British paddington bear sweater.

dsc_0042

Great shoes – so much better than weird sneakers – you guys know what I mean.

dsc_0035

This dad’s look is very simple, but still so stylish – especially the shoes. The jeans are also a perfect shade of denim, and I get weirdly excited when I see a perfect shade of denim. It would be a dream to spend a day in the Levi’s vintage warehouse… someone get me in there!!

It’s all about ME..HAUTE

Me. Fall 2016. Marin County, California.

This necklace is from Laura Kimpton, her large instillations may be found at Burning Man, and she has a retail store in the bohemian town of Fairfax, California. Louis Vuitton is also making gold initial necklaces, $480 each. See below from In Style Magazine,

I can’t remember where I bought this shearling jacket, but it was used and I knew it was a seriously amazing find. My psychic style powers told me that shearling was going to be huge again – and I was right. I love this jacket, but it’s a little bulky and boxy. Shearling can have a luxury, designer look, a downtown NYC look, a mountain, preppy LL.Bean look or even a bohemian 70’s look..depending on the jacket and how you style it.

Seen here on me is my 90’s style – reminds me of Mary J. Blige and the street style of Jennifer Lopez, and Hip-Hop artists in NYC during that period. I took an American Apparel strapless one piece, and cut it  – it’s a little crooked (I never cut in a straight line).

dsc_0186

Cheap sunglasses, $10 on Haight-Ashbury..

dsc_0185

My enormous Louis Vuitton Speedy bag, which is really sold as luggage. I bought these Timberlands at Century 21 in NYC…

dsc_0189

Does this braid make me look a little bohemian?

dsc_0214

Paige Denim, love these jeans – not sure if I love the way my butt looks..but they are comfortable and not skin tight.

dsc_0210

My dorkiest face – only adding to this look!!
