I saw a lot of style at Bottlerock Napa, a three-day music festival with food, wine, art and a worthy line-up of incredible talent; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Florence + The Machine, Buddy Guy, The Lumineers, Lenny Kravitz etc.

Hilary Duff Wears Short Shorts, so do I..

unnamed-5

Are women just mean? Is it biological? Or are we conditioned from an early age to judge, criticize and mock other women? As a feminist, I feel terrible putting down my fellow sisters, but after reading the comments regarding Hilary’s drop-off “look”, I’m not happy with the state of our society, particularly females belittling each other.

Feeling Exposed, My Workout Style…

DSC_0163

Fashion Notes: Minnetonka moccasins, Lululemon Boogie shorts, Bag purchased in Barcelona, Uniqlo puffy jacket in navy.

I’ve come to the realization that I actually am that person, that “mom” who wears workout clothing every day – even without working out. Is it the support of the spandex, which offers me comfort? Whatever it may be, I still get stopped quite frequently (don’t roll your eyes), complimenting me on my different looks. It always surprises me, because I’m not even wearing proper clothing. If I lived in NYC, London or Paris – no chance I would spend my days in leggings..but I live somewhere, where it’s more acceptable. But it does get boring staring at a sea of Patagonia jackets and Lululemon leggings, and of course “reasonable” sneakers.  So once again, I put together a few looks on what I wear to make my workout clothing sexier, cooler and most importantly stylish.

So these looks are exaggerated, I’m sucking in and only showing you my best angles..When I leave the gym, I change – I add accessories, change my shoes etc.. I know it’s gross that I don’t shower, but who has time?  For more of my workout style tips..http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mara-menachem/how-to-be-a-style-icon-in_b_4898418.html

Fashion Notes: Adidas slides, Chloe T-shirt, Leggings from TJ Max, Chanel Classic bag, Ralph Lauren vintage blue blazer (courtesy of one of my brother’s Bar Mitzvah’s), Door Knocker Earrings from Amazon, Socks??

Yes, Adidas slides are cool! The Adidas slides have been huge in Paris for a while now, especially worn with skirts. The problem for me, is that most people don’t know or care about style..so they see me walking around with socks and slides, and assume I’m a lunatic – which I am, but I also have a “look” – which usually is appreciated in cities like Paris and NYC. I once had an outfit on, and my Step-Father thought it was quite funny looking – as we walked down Madison, a man in a taxi had the taxi pull over, and asked me if I would appear in his boyfriend’s fashion show..”you are fierce”, he said to me. Validation baby!!

Fashion Notes: Miu Miu bag (it’s so huge, I can’t find anything), Marc Jacobs jean skirt, Chloe top, Uniqlo puffy, Armani aviators

I basically re-wear the same things over and over – but try to mix things up, to not seem like such a repeater – but I do a terrible job. I’m a lover of bags and earrings, so that’s my way of making my look a little less boring.

I realize most of you aren’t running around in cropped shirts – and my style may be influenced by Miami – but style is about having fun – and NO JUDGMENTS!!

“Dad Bods” Make Me Very Mad. My HuffPost Rant.

IMG_7189

“I am so annoyed (can you tell by my photo). I’ve been reading all the hype surrounding the new term coined by women, “the Dad Bod” in an attempt to make men feel better about their slightly “out-of-shape, I’m-a-dad” body. After hearing this moronic news report, I almost left my spouse to go back to my days at my all women’s college and make my lesbian experimentation a reality. Do I truly hate men? Or do I despise women who constantly give men credit for doing absolutely nothing?”

“…Landing at JFK at nearly 3:00 a.m., I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings. I was focused on walking from the west side of Central Park to the east, where I could plop on a bench lazily and watch my kids play. “Hold up,” a young guy spoke into his phone, “I’m looking at a damn perfect ass.”

I Have Nothing to Wear! Huffington Post Style.

Mara

“With twenty minutes left before I would be rudely late, and between the kids bugging me, my hair soaking wet, and my makeup-free face — I was beginning to stress. I threw on my old faithful, a Black A-K-R-I-S dress. A purchase made in “The Back-Room”of Loehmann’s many years ago, a dress that has come to my rescue more times then I can count.” Click below for the rest of the article:

Should Designer Fashion be Inclusive? HuffPost Style.

DSC_0195

A homeless man rifling through a garbage can at the Lilly Pulitzer event in Bryant Park.

“Before there was Target, Loehmann’s gave me access to designer brands at lower prices. And Loehmann’s is where I purchased my first Lilly Pulitzer dress. It was this dress that I wore at my friend’s country club, only I re-created the design. I shortened the knee length dress to a mini-dress reminiscent of Twiggy in the 1960’s (only with a much curvier body), and I paired it with black combat boots and a shredded jean jacket.”

Bryant Park. April 2015. Lily Pulitzer for Target Pop-Up Event.

And to read my piece about Lilly Pulitzer in The Huffington Post, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mara-menachem/mrs-lilly-pulitzer-may-i-_b_3086750.html

DSC_0197

I happen to be grabbing coffee at a stand in Bryant Park, when I ran into this Lilly for Target pop-up event. To see Bryant Park adorned with pink umbrellas, people (including men) draped in Lilly printed blankets, dresses, pants and lounging on Lilly fabric was an eye opener.  The City not a place where bright colors are worn, was literally draped in a Palm Beach aesthetic.

DSC_0190

The history of Lilly Pulitzer goes way back – and the iconic brand, after suffering the loss of its founder, has partnered with Target to bring their designs to the masses.  And why not? The brand known for dressing the “country club” set is branching out – -a lot of commentary is coming from the fashion community, including long time Lilly consumers. Some think the move to partner with Target is “cheapening” the brand – others believe Lilly  Pulitzer should remain a brand with a specific “target” market.

Haute Restaurateur Mama. Weekend Drop-Off.

Vanessa 1

Vanessa. Mom. Model. Restaurateur. Marin County, March 2015.

DSC_0088 DSC_0086

Vanessa is one of the owners of the Real Restaurants Group, www.realrestaurants.com – They include local and famed, Picco, Buckeye Bungalow and Bar Bocce. When I stopped Vanessa, I knew she was a model. She’s a woman you notice, her beauty is obvious, but her smile, warmth and charm are what captivated me.

Sometimes beauty can be intimidating.  Individuals I know who are model beautiful have explained (don’t roll your eyes) having to play down their looks to seem more approachable. I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. I once wrote about beauty being intimidating in this HuffPost piece, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mara-menachem/beauty_b_2480591.html?

DSC_0084

This is why I believe in the power of a smile. I smile at people all the time — I’m sure it seems weird.  When I was eating at Elio’s on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a group of people sat eating dinner – a woman looked in my direction, I gave her a huge smile, taken by surprise, she looked at me and reciprocated. As she walked out to leave, she walked up to me and said “I was so taken a back by your beautiful smile – no one does that anymore.  It’s a simple gesture, that means so much, so thank you for reminding me of that.”. She then mentioned the huge piece of broccoli stuck in my teeth.

I love Vanessa’s handbag.  It’s nice to carry something that’s so unique with no logos. Although I love a classic designer bag – especially vintage, I usually wear bags with no obvious labels.

I have frequented many of Vanessa’s spots, they are bustling and alive – kind of like The Smith’s song “take me out tonight, because I want to see people and I want to see life”.
