Haute Pantsuit Nation at Drop-Off

dsc_0011

Marin County. November 8, 2016. Election Day.

This morning at Drop-Off, a bunch of mamas met and planned to wear pant suits, to be a part of the group #pantsuitnation – where women around the country are wearing pant suits in honor of Hillary Clinton – sisterhood and Feminism, what’s so funny is no one has pants suit anymore. One mom wore her late Republican grandmother’s blazer from Lord & Taylor – we all thought that was pretty ironic, a store with a stereotype in the past of serving a very conservative upper-middle class WASPY population.

It was my idea to just wear yoga pants in combination with blazers, mostly because selfishly I wanted to do yoga after our pant suit power rally. I do think it’s fashionably interesting that none of us wear anything that resembles suits at all anymore – we’re feminists in dresses!!

Leslie, a powerhouse executive at HBO wore this version of a suit to show her support of Hillary – she’s showing her gorgeous daughter the importance of making your voice count.

Check out all these women in Pant Suits at school drop-off this morning.  We are showing our kids, through example, how to be a part of the decision making in this country – our votes mean something. The bonding this election has created is more significant than the separation – I’m so proud of women in this country for supporting one another and making sure all of our voices are heard.

This mama got all of us to meet at drop-off this morning in our pant suits..love her version of this old school look.

Brazilians are always Haute (to me)…

Fernanda. Marin County. October 2016.

dsc_0012

Check out those espadrilles! Fernanda is Brazilian and now Californian..I grew up lucky enough to be around Brazilians – stylish, cool, laid back and fun… maybe these are stereotypes, but these are the characteristics I find in many Brazilians. Also insanely gorgeous!!

dsc_0011

Perfect love…

dsc_0018

Strike a pose… Fernanda exercises daily (as you can see).

Haute Anthropologist Mama. What will they say about Trump?

dsc_0005

Cassidy. San Rafael, California. October 2016.

Cassidy is a head turner, I started stalking her last year at school drop-off – she then caught me yelling at my kids on the street – yup, I’m that mom. After that humiliating exercise, I had to introduce myself to this gorgeous mom with glowing skin and perfect hair. “excuse me, hi, I’m Mara, sorry you had to see me yell at my kids, I know I seem mean – anyway, you are gorgeous, who’s your dermatologist?” Just kidding about the last part, but that’s kind of what happened. Don’t be jealous of my social skills!

dsc_0008

Cassidy is dressed up for a Children’s Faire, where fantasy comes to life for kids – it reminds me of the Princess Bride.. Cassidy ain’t no flower child – well maybe a little bit… Cassidy is an Anthropologist and an Archaeologist. And that’s all I can say about that – kidding!! I loved my Anthropology classes in College, but I’m sure you’ll believe me when I tell you, I had to re-spell Archaeology several times in this post.

I will say that I’m very curious how Anthropologists are processing Trump’s candidacy and those that follow him.  How have cultural values and norms changed? Bet that’s a question a lot of Anthropology students are answering on their undergrad papers.

Some people claim Stevie Nicks started this bohemian layering trend… what do you think?

$600 Distressed High Tops? Cali Style Ain’t Cheap..

Natalie. Marin County, California. October 2016.

Natalie is the owner of LOOKING GLASS, Luxe Clothing & Shoes in Sonoma County. Sonoma is the Northern California town, famed for its wine. Sonoma not only has visitors from all around the world, but many East Coasters, and LA peeps, have second homes, wineries and have even transplanted year round to this gorgeous town.

So it’s no surprise that Natalie’s store is filled with high design pieces for Sonoma’s stylish crew of women. Check her out @lookingglass707

How LA do they look? So cute!

Fashion Notes: Mother high waisted jeans, Golden Goose sneakers, Bella Lux top, Rag & Bone suede hat, Aviator Nation tote, Pamela Love spike rings, Rolex watch.

Hebrew tattoo by Buddha’s Palm Tattoo in Sebastopol, a bohemian town in Northern California. I’m pretty sure the first time I spotted a Hebrew tattoo, I was amazed – I thought  that tattoos were forbidden in Judaism – something about desecrating your body, which is merely a shell – your soul belongs to you. This is at least my interpretation. As if Jews don’t have enough guilt, we grew up thinking if you got a tattoo you wouldn’t be allowed to be buried in a Jewish cemetery – I think it must have something to do with the Holocaust, and de-humanizing Jews by tattooing their arms with numbers identifying them in the concentration camps.

Small words wrapped around Natalie’s wrist.

dsc_0084

When I spotted Natalie’s Golden Goose sneakers, I knew she was invested in fashion. These sneakers are not cheap, and part of their appeal to the fashion set is the intentional distressed look – it’s like your brother’s hand me down high tops, which take months to break in. Prices start around $500, and can be found at Barney’s NYC.

dsc_0080

The tote bag trend started with Americans finally bringing re-usable bags to the grocery store. Since then, tote bags have gone designer..and I always say tote bags are the new status symbol. I use a few my mom gets from The Aspen Institute – I feel so intellectual and sophisticated when walking through my local store  – if they only knew the truth – my tote bags are hand me downs!

JLo Hair is Haute.. Edith.

unnamed-8

Edith. Aspen. Summer 2016.

unnamed-5

Edith has that Jlo glow.. she is gorgeous!!

unnamed-10

It’s all about the Hair. perfect beach hair, wavy with honey highlights.

unnamed-6

He’s so cute!!

unnamed-9

Always make sure those cutoff’s fit well – – like here on Edith, I need to be better with the fit-  I get them short and too baggy in the booty.

unnamed-7

Babydolls -n- Boots, Haute.

unnamed

Jenny. Aspen. August 2016.

unnamed-1

Well, well, well isn’t this a throwback to the 1990’s. Every “it” girl wore cowboy boots and baby doll dresses in the 1990’s – I believe Betsey Johnson started the trend with her sexy floral dresses all the girls coveted – back then, her stores had a no return policy, so you had to be sure that pricey dress looked good.

unnamed-9

unnamed-3

The nails and small tattoos add that 2016 modern edge to Jenny’s look.

unnamed-5

Cowboy boots are always sexy with a short dress, for shorter legs aim for an ankle boot, sometimes full size cowboy boots can make legs appear shorter – but who cares!!!

unnamed-2

Jenny’s roots are rock-n-roll…this photo is so pure..

She’s Got it. Chillin’ in the Park. NYC Style.

Central Park. June 2016.

Check out this hair in The City. Slight shaving action on the side, and you transform your style to always looking funky.

I’m loving this mom’s style – and that’s why I’m sharing so many photos. She’s so simple, but gives off this slight punky-post-modern look.

Music Festival Mama…

DSC_0045

Cute mom. Bottlerock Napa. May 2016.

Music festivals are difficult to navigate and usually hot, weather wise – so to add a toddler to the mix, shows a major commitment to music. Bottlerock had a “kiddie corner” with fun stations to keep all the cute kids occupied.

DSC_0044

I know she’s dressed simply, but she looks California casual (and it was hot)

Rome Parents = Sex Appeal.

Rome

North Miami Beach, Florida. December 2015.

This was taken at Miami Beach’s famed Bal Harbour Shops, http://www.balharbourshops.com.  Bal Harbour Shops is home to luxury brands such as; Chanel, Gucci, Goyard, Intermix, Miu Miu, John Varvatos etc..

Growing up in Miami, we would come to Bal Harbour because Saks Fifth Avenue always had the best sales..it was also a bonding time with my mother (and usually brothers) to walk around, eat a big lunch and feel like a slob among Miami’s “well dressed”. I say that in quotes, because you will also see some amazing outfits, where every single designer is displayed on their bodies.

rome 2

If you ever want to get a semi-understanding of Miami, and its people – visit Bal Harbour shops. Yes, it’s not totally representative of this city, because most people can’t afford to walk into Chanel and spend $12,000 on two handbags. Oh and usually, that’s in actual cash.  Bal Harbour Shops is Miami’s version of Rodeo Drive (only in an outdoor mall form) and apparently is more successful.

Dressed in cut off’s, a plaid torn shirt, moccasins and a bikini peaking through – I looked like the official “Bal Harbour Slob”.  Oh, did I mention my hair was larger than Gloria Estefan’s in the late 80’s… (thank you ocean water). It’s an inside joke, between me and well, me – that I always look like a mess when I should look “stylish”. I think it’s the rebel in me, saying I don’t need to conform to your fashion standards – or maybe it’s bad time management. I walked into Chanel, and everyone looked gorgeous – like they all got their hair blown out for this expedition. I stood there, and waited to be helped – and observed the mind blowing idea that there is such a discrepancy of wealth in this Country – but quickly I realized most of the shoppers were tourists – with lots of cash.

rome 3

As I walked around, I met this fun, stylish Italian family – who moved from Rome to Miami. The Italian fashion sensibility is natural and always comes with a smile.

unnamed-5

The little boy wanted me to capture his remote control car. Italian men can even make sneakers look chic.

unnamed-3

This is how we shop – practical shoes.

unnamed-7

This mama, like me was super excited about her new Valentino mini-backpack. Remember, I told you these are huge again. Jump suit by Missoni (obviously).

unnamed-6

Happiness right there!! And I hear happiness makes your butt look better in photos!

unnamed-2

The thing I discovered, which differed from my younger self – I didn’t care about looking like a slob in a designer obsessed land. I’m pretty darn comfortable in my skin, even when it’s not dressed “cool”. Obviously, it’s because “cool” comes from within, and part of that is having fun, being spontaneous and living life without the worry of always having to look your best.
