Bet Her Hair Doesn’t get Frizzy. She’s HAUTE.

Makelle. Marin County, California. Mom. Therapist. April 2017.

It’s Spring time, and parents are outside. Makelle was taking her daughter to a puppet show, outside in the perfect LA ‘like’ weather. We both chatted about feeling like it’s hard to accomplish much in a day, especially with little kids – showering is an accomplishment.

Personally, I’ve been having a hard time getting dressed, I think I forgot how to look stylish when it’s hot… the vision of my pale legs, scared me out of wearing cutoff’s. When I finally got my confidence back, one of my kids asked me to please not wear “those shorts” as they are “so embarrassing”.  Because I’m so psychologically healthy (ha), I needed to know why the embarrassment, Is it because I look bad in them? Or good? After a brief interrogation, I was left with zero information regarding the mystery of why my cutoffs embarrass this kid.

DSC_0023

This denim jumper looks incredible on Makelle- I hope she realizes how good she looks in this – DAMN!!!

Makelle has a look I could never relate to at all – she’s tiny, blonde and her hair never frizzes.  She can show her bra, without looking Va Va Voom- like some people I know (me).

She can probably pull off a Free People loose sun dress, ya know the ones that are so confusing to try on? You can’t figure out how your nipples won’t show and/or how anyone can wear this fabric tied together with string, without some fat sticking out…I’ll bet that Makelle is one of the few who can rock that look.

DSC_0017

Makelle even has stylin’ tattoos, when I think of a triangle, I think of many interpretations of this symbol – from Gay rights to the Holocaust to femininity.  I love the way this simple ink looks on her arm, it’s like having a permanent accessory, and you always look a little hip, ya know?

Haute Anthropologist Mama. What will they say about Trump?

dsc_0005

Cassidy. San Rafael, California. October 2016.

Cassidy is a head turner, I started stalking her last year at school drop-off – she then caught me yelling at my kids on the street – yup, I’m that mom. After that humiliating exercise, I had to introduce myself to this gorgeous mom with glowing skin and perfect hair. “excuse me, hi, I’m Mara, sorry you had to see me yell at my kids, I know I seem mean – anyway, you are gorgeous, who’s your dermatologist?” Just kidding about the last part, but that’s kind of what happened. Don’t be jealous of my social skills!

dsc_0008

Cassidy is dressed up for a Children’s Faire, where fantasy comes to life for kids – it reminds me of the Princess Bride.. Cassidy ain’t no flower child – well maybe a little bit… Cassidy is an Anthropologist and an Archaeologist. And that’s all I can say about that – kidding!! I loved my Anthropology classes in College, but I’m sure you’ll believe me when I tell you, I had to re-spell Archaeology several times in this post.

I will say that I’m very curious how Anthropologists are processing Trump’s candidacy and those that follow him.  How have cultural values and norms changed? Bet that’s a question a lot of Anthropology students are answering on their undergrad papers.

Megan makes Drop-Off so Fly…

DSC_0034

Megan. Marin County. May 2016.

DSC_0033

Megan is a repeat Haute Drop mama. Always looking fly this one….When I run into Megan, she knows that I’m going to beg her to let me take some shots. She always looks good, without that “I tried to look good” look.

DSC_0037

Megan knows how to wear animal print ankle boots, without looking cheesy. Not everyone has that gift – paired with solid leggings, and casual bohemian accessories  – and it works so well.

Nina and Felix. Fairfax, California. Spring 2016.

unnamed-2

Felix grew up in Cuba, I was very excited to connect with him – because he obviously reminded me of Miami. Nina (who also has roots in Cuba) and Felix are actively involved in making Cuba a better place for its citizens. They founded the organization, Bay Area Cuba Community Alliance, www.baccagroup.org

Most of us who grew up in Miami, consider ourselves partially Cuban – we were lucky to be raised with so many people from different cultures, and with a large percentage of Cubans making Miami home – we got to start our mornings with a Cafecito and pastelito and grew up speaking “Spainglish”, the unofficial language of Miami. So when you meet someone who’s Cuban outside of Miami, you feel like you already have a great deal in common.

Adorable family style…

unnamed-1

Nina grew up in Northern California, but lived in NYC for a long time – she has that natural New York sensibility (her parents are New Yorkers) mixed in with the open minded California spirit. When you have tattoos this large, you’ll never come off as uptight – only creative and cool (even if you are the opposite).

Glowing & Haute in Ojai. (and my attempt at “hippie”)

unnamed-18

Sarah. Ojai, California. 2015.

A California mama in Ojai – relaxed, non-complicated, smiling…It’s all very California, even in the way Sarah is dressed – a floppy hat reminiscent of the 70’s, her shiny straight hair, striped fitted dress and an authentic smile… I’ll never look this easy breezy  – right?

There is a difference in style between LA, which is always on point, very sexy and laid back bohemian – but in places like Ojai and Joshua Tree, the style seems to be vintage, and the period 1970’s. I think it’s funny that when people visit Joshua Tree, they even pack like they are headed to a music festival or the original Woodstock.  I’ve attempted this look, but I always come out looking Miami.. like this:

I’m going to New York City tomorrow, and I haven’t packed – but I know, my suitcase will be filled with much more cool looking and funkier clothing then I wear in California. When I’m in NYC, I pull out my real style and feel like I can get away with anything – it’s so fun. This week I think I may even wear my Adidas high tops all day – and leave the heels at home. CRAAAAAZZZZYYYY!!

Feeling Exposed, My Workout Style…

DSC_0163

Fashion Notes: Minnetonka moccasins, Lululemon Boogie shorts, Bag purchased in Barcelona, Uniqlo puffy jacket in navy.

I’ve come to the realization that I actually am that person, that “mom” who wears workout clothing every day – even without working out. Is it the support of the spandex, which offers me comfort? Whatever it may be, I still get stopped quite frequently (don’t roll your eyes), complimenting me on my different looks. It always surprises me, because I’m not even wearing proper clothing. If I lived in NYC, London or Paris – no chance I would spend my days in leggings..but I live somewhere, where it’s more acceptable. But it does get boring staring at a sea of Patagonia jackets and Lululemon leggings, and of course “reasonable” sneakers.  So once again, I put together a few looks on what I wear to make my workout clothing sexier, cooler and most importantly stylish.

So these looks are exaggerated, I’m sucking in and only showing you my best angles..When I leave the gym, I change – I add accessories, change my shoes etc.. I know it’s gross that I don’t shower, but who has time?  For more of my workout style tips..http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mara-menachem/how-to-be-a-style-icon-in_b_4898418.html

Fashion Notes: Vintage GAP fanny pack (don’t be jealous), North Face cropped Jacket, Michael Stars Tank (but badly by me), Bangles by Shandi Levy Jewelry & India, Alternative Leggings

DSC_0261

Fashion Notes: Adidas slides, Chloe T-shirt, Leggings from TJ Max, Chanel Classic bag, Ralph Lauren vintage blue blazer (courtesy of one of my brother’s Bar Mitzvah’s), Door Knocker Earrings from Amazon, Socks??

Yes, Adidas slides are cool! The Adidas slides have been huge in Paris for a while now, especially worn with skirts. The problem for me, is that most people don’t know or care about style..so they see me walking around with socks and slides, and assume I’m a lunatic – which I am, but I also have a “look” – which usually is appreciated in cities like Paris and NYC. I once had an outfit on, and my Step-Father thought it was quite funny looking – as we walked down Madison, a man in a taxi had the taxi pull over, and asked me if I would appear in his boyfriend’s fashion show..”you are fierce”, he said to me. Validation baby!!

DSC_0221

Fashion Notes: Leggings from REI, by North Face, Vintage GAP fanny pack, Tribal leather jacket, Chanel Bag, Elizabeth & James Tank

DSC_0288

Fashion Notes: Miu Miu bag (it’s so huge, I can’t find anything), Marc Jacobs jean skirt, Chloe top, Uniqlo puffy, Armani aviators

I basically re-wear the same things over and over – but try to mix things up, to not seem like such a repeater – but I do a terrible job. I’m a lover of bags and earrings, so that’s my way of making my look a little less boring.

DSC_0293

I realize most of you aren’t running around in cropped shirts – and my style may be influenced by Miami – but style is about having fun – and NO JUDGMENTS!!

Singin’ her Feelings. Haute in Brooklyn.

Lucille Ghatti (far right) and Friends. Brooklyn.July 2015.

Lucille is a singer. She talks openly about her struggle loving the father of her baby, and him not reciprocating. The pain is so real, and her emotions so raw and truthful. It’s hard to share our pain – most of us like to pretend everything is perfect, that we’re happy all the time. But that’s impossible, isn’t it?

unnamed-2

I LOVE these friends! Lucille and her stylish crew walked by me in the Burrough Hill section of Brooklyn. Lucy told me she’s a singer and new mom.  Struggling with issues as a young woman raising a kid alone, Lucille shares her struggle through her music.  Lucille has quite a following because so many people can relate and feel something when listening to her voice.

Berkeley Style at Drop-Off.

AMP_Eli9_05-03-2015_2658

Lacreasa. Berkeley. May 2015.

I was at a birthday party in Berkeley when I learned one of the dads is a professional photographer, Adam Moore, www.sugardigital.com, Adam does a lot of editing. So when my camera ran out of battery, I called my new photographer friend over and kind of demanded he take photos for Haute Drop-Off. And here they are – pretty cool setting, pretty cool subjects.

AMP_Eli9_05-03-2015_2676

I met Lacreasa at the Berkeley Playground. She just got back from Jamaica and enjoys learning about Rastafarianism,  She’s also a mechanic, which is pretty darn cool. I wish I had the patience to fix things, but I’m pretty sure it would be fun to learn how to work on cars – -and it’s pretty stylish looking.

AMP_Eli9_05-03-2015_2655

SO I worship long nails, especially on a mechanic!! Lacreasa was helping build and paint with her kids..she is not afraid to dive in. That’s the key to long nails, you can’t let them stop you from everyday activities. For me, I had a lot of issues with minor activities like putting a credit card in a parking meter. That’s why I’m back to sporting my boring, short nails.

AMP_Eli9_05-03-2015_2666

It’s all about the backpack now..especially ones made in other countries, that are specific to different cultures…love this one.

AMP_Eli9_05-03-2015_2670

You know, I’m such a mixer – my long nails mixed with my huge earrings and boho style – this is exactly what this mom is pulling off – – -we’re all multi-faceted – it’s so much more fun.

NYC Mama in the Bay.

Nancy 5

Nancy. Mom. Writer. Lawyer. Singer. New Yorker. February 2015. Marin County.

If you know me at all, you will know I’m a jean jacket freak, I have so many, but usually wear the same one on repeat for a month and switch to the next denim jacket perfection. One of the reasons I moved out of Miami, was so I could wear my jackets every day – oh and because my hair looks so good in California (I’m kidding).

Nancy is wearing an insane fringe jean jacket from the store Calypso, http://www.calypsostbarth.com  – Calypso has stores in several locations, Nancy purchased this bad boy at The Marin Country Mart..an outdoor shopping/eating spot with some seriously good and expensive stores, like Intermix, www.intermix.com

nancy 3

Nancy’s bag is a classic and funky Balenciaga “City” Bag. I always loved this Balenciaga pocketbook, http://www.balenciaga.com/, because it makes any look a little more urban cool.  When you are wearing work out clothing, this bag adds excitement to what can be boring.

Remember all this excitement, doesn’t come cheap.  Balenciaga handbags start at around $1,000. The best shoppers I know, aren’t rich – but they usually (unlike impulsive me) buy a few good pieces, and it’s worth the investment. I’ve never sold a bag before, but people have great success consigning designer handbags. And I’ve had great success buying used designer goods.

Nancy’s motorcycle boots are by Ash, www.ash.com – the same brand that designed my famous gold studded kicks.

nancy 2

Nancy is a writer, attorney and singer. I just saw her perform on stage singing an incredible version of Corinne Bailey Rae’s Like a Star.  Nancy is a New Yorker through and through, and now makes Marin County her home, with her family, including two young kids. When my kid’s music teacher told me about Nancy’s website, I immediately started stalking…I needed her as a friend, and it worked.  Check out Nancy’s take on living in the Bay Area, she gives great tips, shares some pretty deep stuff, and the not so deep.  www.nycgirlbythebay.com
