Bet Her Hair Doesn’t get Frizzy. She’s HAUTE.

Makelle. Marin County, California. Mom. Therapist. April 2017.

It’s Spring time, and parents are outside. Makelle was taking her daughter to a puppet show, outside in the perfect LA ‘like’ weather. We both chatted about feeling like it’s hard to accomplish much in a day, especially with little kids – showering is an accomplishment.

Personally, I’ve been having a hard time getting dressed, I think I forgot how to look stylish when it’s hot… the vision of my pale legs, scared me out of wearing cutoff’s. When I finally got my confidence back, one of my kids asked me to please not wear “those shorts” as they are “so embarrassing”.  Because I’m so psychologically healthy (ha), I needed to know why the embarrassment, Is it because I look bad in them? Or good? After a brief interrogation, I was left with zero information regarding the mystery of why my cutoffs embarrass this kid.

DSC_0023

This denim jumper looks incredible on Makelle- I hope she realizes how good she looks in this – DAMN!!!

Makelle has a look I could never relate to at all – she’s tiny, blonde and her hair never frizzes.  She can show her bra, without looking Va Va Voom- like some people I know (me).

She can probably pull off a Free People loose sun dress, ya know the ones that are so confusing to try on? You can’t figure out how your nipples won’t show and/or how anyone can wear this fabric tied together with string, without some fat sticking out…I’ll bet that Makelle is one of the few who can rock that look.

Makelle even has stylin’ tattoos, when I think of a triangle, I think of many interpretations of this symbol – from Gay rights to the Holocaust to femininity.  I love the way this simple ink looks on her arm, it’s like having a permanent accessory, and you always look a little hip, ya know?

Haute Pantsuit Nation at Drop-Off

dsc_0011

Marin County. November 8, 2016. Election Day.

This morning at Drop-Off, a bunch of mamas met and planned to wear pant suits, to be a part of the group #pantsuitnation – where women around the country are wearing pant suits in honor of Hillary Clinton – sisterhood and Feminism, what’s so funny is no one has pants suit anymore. One mom wore her late Republican grandmother’s blazer from Lord & Taylor – we all thought that was pretty ironic, a store with a stereotype in the past of serving a very conservative upper-middle class WASPY population.

It was my idea to just wear yoga pants in combination with blazers, mostly because selfishly I wanted to do yoga after our pant suit power rally. I do think it’s fashionably interesting that none of us wear anything that resembles suits at all anymore – we’re feminists in dresses!!

Leslie, a powerhouse executive at HBO wore this version of a suit to show her support of Hillary – she’s showing her gorgeous daughter the importance of making your voice count.

Check out all these women in Pant Suits at school drop-off this morning.  We are showing our kids, through example, how to be a part of the decision making in this country – our votes mean something. The bonding this election has created is more significant than the separation – I’m so proud of women in this country for supporting one another and making sure all of our voices are heard.

This mama got all of us to meet at drop-off this morning in our pant suits..love her version of this old school look.

Natalie. Marin County, California. October 2016.

Natalie is the owner of LOOKING GLASS, Luxe Clothing & Shoes in Sonoma County. Sonoma is the Northern California town, famed for its wine. Sonoma not only has visitors from all around the world, but many East Coasters, and LA peeps, have second homes, wineries and have even transplanted year round to this gorgeous town.

So it’s no surprise that Natalie’s store is filled with high design pieces for Sonoma’s stylish crew of women. Check her out @lookingglass707

Hebrew tattoo by Buddha’s Palm Tattoo in Sebastopol, a bohemian town in Northern California. I’m pretty sure the first time I spotted a Hebrew tattoo, I was amazed – I thought  that tattoos were forbidden in Judaism – something about desecrating your body, which is merely a shell – your soul belongs to you. This is at least my interpretation. As if Jews don’t have enough guilt, we grew up thinking if you got a tattoo you wouldn’t be allowed to be buried in a Jewish cemetery – I think it must have something to do with the Holocaust, and de-humanizing Jews by tattooing their arms with numbers identifying them in the concentration camps.

Small words wrapped around Natalie’s wrist.

dsc_0084

When I spotted Natalie’s Golden Goose sneakers, I knew she was invested in fashion. These sneakers are not cheap, and part of their appeal to the fashion set is the intentional distressed look – it’s like your brother’s hand me down high tops, which take months to break in. Prices start around $500, and can be found at Barney’s NYC.

The tote bag trend started with Americans finally bringing re-usable bags to the grocery store. Since then, tote bags have gone designer..and I always say tote bags are the new status symbol. I use a few my mom gets from The Aspen Institute – I feel so intellectual and sophisticated when walking through my local store  – if they only knew the truth – my tote bags are hand me downs!

She’s Lookin’ Poncho Perfect…

DSC_0029

Carrie. 66th and Broadway. NYC. Summer 2016.

Carrie is wearing a poncho by Australian design house Ella Sanders, http://www.ellasanders.com.au. Danielle Sanders, founder of Ella Sanders comes from a long line of established wool farmers and was raised by an avid knitter.  Her passion for high quality fabrics and classic design led to the creation of this Australian design house.  Lucky for us, Ella Sanders will be making its stateside debut very soon.

My mother buys high quality knits from high end wool to cashmere and she wears them for years. I still wear my grandmother’s cashmere sweater from the 70’s and my mom’s wool sweaters from the 80’s. They’ve stood the test of time, and that’s what you get when you buy high quality fabrics. Also, wool breathes – that’s why it’s a fabric you can even wear in the summer!! My first official job in fashion was at The Woolmark Company, whose role was to market wool to the fashion industry. Contrary to what you may think, it was ultra glamorous and gave me access to all the major fashion magazines   – and amazing parties!

My sister-in-law looking dope with my delicious niece. She has taken this poncho and made it bohemian funky with her ankle boots and floppy hat.

Megan makes Drop-Off so Fly…

DSC_0034

Megan. Marin County. May 2016.

DSC_0033

Megan is a repeat Haute Drop mama. Always looking fly this one….When I run into Megan, she knows that I’m going to beg her to let me take some shots. She always looks good, without that “I tried to look good” look.

DSC_0037

Megan knows how to wear animal print ankle boots, without looking cheesy. Not everyone has that gift – paired with solid leggings, and casual bohemian accessories  – and it works so well.

Lisa. Psychologist. Dancer. Fashion Lover. Marin County, California. May 2015.

Love the combination of an open toe Jil Sander ankle boot/heel with a min-dress and cropped jean jacket. Funny, because this was my Miami look, when I lived there. And slowly as I’ve been living in Marin, I’ve moved away from my short dresses.

April. Marin County. January 2015

Fashion Notes: Boots: Hunter, Puffy Jacket: Add Down

When I see April at school, I like to sing her that Sesame Street song, “one of these things is not like the other”.  She usually gives me a look, but April is so chic and always looks polished, unlike me.  Sometimes I think, if I have to get out of the car due to police interference, I may just refuse – this is what manifests from being late and barely having time to give your kid’s breakfast.  And Neal and Liam are so quick to judge their mama, calling me “girly”, a horrible stereotype, when I put blush and mascara on…. This is where April has saved me.

April owns Dollface Beauty in San Anselmo, California. Dollface does it all…they know me so well there, I’ve been pretty much taken hostage, because according to these beauty experts, my unruly eyebrows were in need of major clean up..I obliged and they look great.

Dollface also provides the most addictive beauty accessory out there….Eyelash extensions.  Yup, these bad boys will cut your “primping” time in half – -they are majorly addictive – because who doesn’t want to look like Cher in the late 1960’s?

The other option, to which Jennifer Aniston is a fan, is making your eyelashes darker…if you have light hair, this will make your eyes look enormous.  Sometimes, when i’m feeling PMSie..I roll into Dollface and someone always makes me feel better – whether it’s a wax, make-up, eyelashes…and when I start getting invited to all the chic parties in San Francisco (hint, hint), Dollface Beauty will make sure I look slammin’.

Mara Menachem, The Bill Cunningham of Parent Fashion

mara3_hautedropoff

Well Guys, I’m pretty excited because this really authentic, cool and stylish Miami mama is giving me mad props (I know people don’t say that anymore, I’m bringing it back).  Annhy is like many of my “sisters” who are proud of me, and show me off – usually it involves some weird dorky dance move.  But Annhy who hardly knows me, has taken how embarrassingly describe Haute Drop-Off – usually in a low voice, to not get heels hurled in my direction, and vocalized it loudly.  And I love her for that. We should all, including me, stop being so afraid of exaggerating our skills….Gosh Darn it, I am the Bill Cunningham for Parent Style, and soon enough, The New York Times will add me to their fashion section and my mother will be able to properly show me off.

So Annhy started a great blog, I mostly love it because she’s so honest and funny, and she’s a looker – which always helps. So enjoy this piece about your very own Mara, and read about why I feel guilty at Guilt Free Mom Moments, http://fomib.com/2015/01/23/hooray-haute-drop-off/

Haute Betty Rubble look-a-like..Fairfax Drop-Off is HOT!

unnamed

Fairfax Festival. Fairfax, California. June 2014.

I took some great shots at this festival all weekend, unfortunately I only had my iPhone.  This mom was in a huge rush, but I begged her to let me photograph her family in matching Leopard outfits..channeling Betty Rubble from The Flinstones.

Fairfax, California has a couple slogans, and one is “only in Fairfax”.  This is a community that is filled with free spirits, and it’s awesome because people are accepting and value individualism.  Unfortunately for me, my individualism is quickly halted by two kids with lots of opinions….

Love this photo..we should all have fun, take ourselves less seriously and rock a Betty Rubble look.

Liz is an avid shopper, I mean this woman has major skills in finding what she wants.  She liked a pair of my bellbottoms and called every Free People across the US to find the pair she desired…and she succeeded.  Great Cali style on this mom.
