Fernanda. Marin County. October 2016.
Check out those espadrilles! Fernanda is Brazilian and now Californian..I grew up lucky enough to be around Brazilians – stylish, cool, laid back and fun… maybe these are stereotypes, but these are the characteristics I find in many Brazilians. Also insanely gorgeous!!
Strike a pose… Fernanda exercises daily (as you can see).
Love this kid! Making a joke out of me asking Fernanda to pose
Cassidy. San Rafael, California. October 2016.
Cassidy is a head turner, I started stalking her last year at school drop-off – she then caught me yelling at my kids on the street – yup, I’m that mom. After that humiliating exercise, I had to introduce myself to this gorgeous mom with glowing skin and perfect hair. “excuse me, hi, I’m Mara, sorry you had to see me yell at my kids, I know I seem mean – anyway, you are gorgeous, who’s your dermatologist?” Just kidding about the last part, but that’s kind of what happened. Don’t be jealous of my social skills!
Cassidy is dressed up for a Children’s Faire, where fantasy comes to life for kids – it reminds me of the Princess Bride.. Cassidy ain’t no flower child – well maybe a little bit… Cassidy is an Anthropologist and an Archaeologist. And that’s all I can say about that – kidding!! I loved my Anthropology classes in College, but I’m sure you’ll believe me when I tell you, I had to re-spell Archaeology several times in this post.
I will say that I’m very curious how Anthropologists are processing Trump’s candidacy and those that follow him. How have cultural values and norms changed? Bet that’s a question a lot of Anthropology students are answering on their undergrad papers.
Pretty in pastels..
Some people claim Stevie Nicks started this bohemian layering trend… what do you think?
Marnina. Marin County Farmers Market. April 2016.
Apparently, the stylish come out to the Farmer’s Markets. I had so much fun hanging out with other mom friends – and made some new friends, including an 87 year old Tony Award winner. He grew up in NYC, we sat and chatted- he spoke to me in Yiddish, Hebrew and Spanish. Who knew, I would find such a character at the San Rafael Farmer’s Market?
Love the dark hair and vintage white/gold glasses.
Marin County. April 2015.
This mom works at a very cool clothing store, Erica Tanov, http://www.ericatanov.com
Love these matte ankle rain boots paired with socks up to the calf. I’m a huge fan of pairing socks with any type of shoe, I get made fun of for it – but I don’t care. My theory is if Parisian women are pulling it off – so can I.
All black is always chic – but adding these socks makes this look funky and stylish. With summer coming soon, throw out your levi cut off’s with ankle socks and flats.. it’s a great way to take away from the sexiness of the short shorts. Here’s an example:
Fashion Notes: Seven jeans cut by me, Chanel Flats, Black ankle socks, Bohemian bag from Barcelona, Top from Anthropologie, Glasses are Ray Ban in green, earrings from India
My Chanel flats were stolen in my luggage at JFK – I miss them. You can wear them with anything and automatically it adds some chicness to an otherwise grungy outfit (which is usually my look). Just ask Alexa Chung, the hip British model and style icon. Alexa wears her Chanel flats with everything – and still manages to look edgy/Downtown and not Upper East Side.
Lisa. Fairfax, California. February 2016.
Lisa is a stylist at Milvali Salon in Mill Valley. Originally from Boston, Lisa and her family live in the bohemian town of Fairfax.
Lisa and her husband are huge Grateful Dead fans, and they are making sure their offspring appreciate the love they have for the group.
Love the evil eye (I think) tattoo.
More Mommy Love…
Araceli. San Rafael, California. October 2015.
Fashion Notes: Vintage GAP denim motorcycle jacket (1990’s), Vintage high-waisted bell bottoms, Aerosmith t-shirt, Has Been clogs and Armani aviators
Denim is my favorite fabric. The more worn it, the better. I love bellbottoms, but because I’m shorter, I have to get them hemmed – and I never make the time. So I usually wear bell bottoms with huge heels, which only works in the evening hours. Picking up my kids from school in huge heels, is pretty impossible. It’s all down hill.
Long wavy hair and denim – always a fashion winner (in my book at least)
Nicasio, California. October 2015.
A little pre-Halloween action. I love these clowns – not scary at all, like an old school circus.
San Rafael, California. October 2015
Very quick shots of this pretty mom in her cotton, bohemian sun dress.
Gorgeous. A little exposed back goes a long way.
Do you know what an accomplishment it is, to look this adorable in a dress, on a windy day taking care of two small children? I’ll tell you, it’s a major one (especially if the wind or kid doesn’t pull your dress up)
Harlow. San Rafael, California. October 2015.
It’s hard to find anyone who wears bigger gold hoops then me.. Harlow is pretty close, and with her great length hair – – -the earrings are front and center. Her baby even is wearing accessories.. (they may be Hindu beads, but still accessories)
“Haute Hippie” is a high end clothing company, which makes bohemian inspired clothing using beautiful fabrics. Harlow is one Haute Hippie putting together her own bohemian look, using clothing & accessories from local Marin County (mostly Fairfax) stores.
I love layering lots of gold rings..especially if I have long, gold nails.
High waisted skirts paired with black tops are very flattering…especially for moms!
Shayla. San Rafael, California. October 2015.
I spotted Shayla from my car, she was picking her kids up from school. Her nails, crop-top and high bun got my attention. Shayla’s boys were such great participants.
In Mara fashion, I pulled over illegally, put my hazards on (doesn’t that make everything legal?) and chased after Shayla. What was it about this mom that grabbed my attention? I think her accessories..and in Marin County, it’s rare to see a glimpse of funky style – that’s not bohemian (well except on me).
White Haute Nails. I’m such a lover of long nails – I know that many of you think of New Jersey in the 1980’s (nothing wrong with that by the way). But the 2015 version of long nails are high fashion – check out the runways. Thanks to Beyonce, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez..long nails have modernized and are HAUTE.
When I sported them, my own mother thought they were very Mafia wife..but I pulled them off, even in Marin – where I was the only person with these long, pointy white (and sometimes gold) nails. In NYC, I looked like everyone else in the East Village..
Small neck tattoo. Once again, I adore these little tattoos.
Happy family = the best style around. So happy Shayla is pulling off this cute crop-top, even after having kids.
Remember when I had these amazing nails? Issue is I couldn’t do basic things, such as typing on an iPhone – Shayla obviously has strong fine motor skills.
Shayla is walking all over town..so she needs stylish and comfortable kicks, like these high-top red Vans.
