Papi has some Tattoos…Haute.

Andy. Mill Valley, California. September 2016.

Apparently Andy gets stopped often. I asked him if he’s in accounting, because he looks the part – how very wrong was I – he’s an Engineer.

Andy can wear the most simple of things, and always make a style statement. When you are covered in body art, it’s hard to separate from a somewhat permanent persona – I think it looks amazing.

Tattoos can be Clean Cut. Handsome Dad.

unnamed-8

Cody. San Rafael, California. May 2016.

unnamed-7

Cody has California style, and even mixed in a little vintage, with his grandfather’s army belt. Even with all those tough tattoos, Cody appears clean cut. What a handsome dad!

Love this belt. Like I always say, raid your grandma’s closet!! (or grandfather in this case)

Mountain Man Style is HAUTE. Dickies at Drop-Off.

woodacre dad 2

Michael. Woodacre, California. May 2015.

Michael is the little league coach for his son’s baseball team. I love how tough this dad looks with his mountain man beard, tattoos and manly physique. And Michael is wearing Dickies, a brand that’s been around for a long time.

Michael works in construction and obviously is a very involved father – believe me, little league is no laughing matter.. it’s major time and communication with parents, parents like me..exactly, not easy.

The town of Woodacre is located in West Marin County – it’s filled with beautiful sprawling landscapes, farms, wild animals and a pretty tight community of truly authentic hippies..You drive around these little towns, and nothing is creepy at all. Because it’s filled with a pretty progressive population of free thinkers- – most likely, no one will shoot you if you accidentally land on their property (unlike some other Southern American towns).

There are no chains, only mom and pop owned stores, where everyone knows everyone. I love the idea of a small town, but one that’s excepting and liberal..and not-judgemental. That’s my image of Woodacre.

Robin Williams spent his teenage years in the town of Woodacre.

Brooding Voice. Haute Musician Papa. Bohemian Drop-Off.

Jeremy. Dad. Musician. Fairfax, California. January 2015.

If anyone could be a style poster child for Fairfax, a bohemian town in Marin County, California–Jeremy would be it. Jeremy has the soul of an artist, and now the soul of a daddy. Jeremy is a musician, playing guitar and singing in the band San Geronimo.  I first heard this band play at a bar, that to me, seemed like it had to be fake and on some movie set. But it wasn’t, this place called Rancho Nicasio is deep in Marin County, and feels like what my image of a 1960 rural hippie town would appear to be.  I even spotted an identical human replica of David Crosby.

Jeremy’s voice is brooding and captivating, but I’m not really a music critic.  What I do know, is that their version of Lyle Lovett’s If I had a Boat will touch you deeply..and make you fall in love with their sound. San Geronimo plays every Thursday at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, owned by famed Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh.  They’ve played at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, as well as many other Bay Area venues.  Click the link below, to check them out:

Haute Dads. Mara’s Style Tips for the Dudes.

Ian. Dad. Chiropractor. Fairfax, California

I really like this photo – I realize Ian doesn’t look like a style icon (sorry Ian). But he has a cool look that I really appreciate. I’m a huge fan of low key male style – I like that Ian hasn’t “tried” too hard.

Like I’ve mentioned before, most dads in Marin County are in a band – were in a band or their the children of rock stars..so it tends to rub off on the overall fashion of this gorgeous part of the world.  And I dig it.

I think it doesn’t come easy to many men, especially ones thrust into fatherhood – to look cool.  I mean when you have to carry gear for toddlers, it’s tough.  But dads you have no excuse, you don’t need to leave your style in the past because you are a father – it just takes a tiny effort to look great.  Here are a few tips…

Summer Dude Tips:

Shoes:  Dudes you should have a great pair of kicks, like vans (no socks), a brown, vintage looking dressier shoe to wear with jeans – rummage through local vintage or consignment shops, you will score some amazing old school shoes – you can spray them “germ-a-phobes”.  Flip Flops: as simple as possible, I like brown leather thin strapped flip-flops.  And for the winter a cool pair of boots, I love a lace up, worn in black boot.

Jeans: This is a tough one. I say simple as possible, no labels or markings. And most importantly make sure it’s well fitted in the booty.  Bring a friend.

Shorts: Ian has it right..I also love cut off jean shorts, but this is risky territory if you are not a fashion maven…Just make sure they are obvious to the eye that they are cut off..this has to be messy – and not too short.

T-shirts:  Simple – please don’t wear athletic t-shirts outside of the gym.  If you are in shape, you can even get away with a tank top in darker colors only!! T-shirts could have names on it like bands etc… just stick to soft cotton.  And make sure the neck is not so high, don’t worry about your hairy chest peaking out- women like that – you are a man, we love to see that (as long as you are not wearing a huge gold chain)!!

Hats: Love them – baseball – school boy – that’s probably what you should choose from, the other options are a bit more complicated to pull off.

Former Model? Haute Dad. Summer Drop-Off.

unnamed

Steven. Dad. Writer. Marin Country Mart. Marin County, California. June 2014.

Spotted this model looking dad yesterday, and ran after him, of course! Just eating ice cream on a gorgeous California summer day…it’s actually not Miami hot, you can sit outside.

Steven is a writer, busy completing a novel. Taking a break from the keyboard to spend time with his adorable and well behaved little girl.

Fashion Notes: Steven is dressed pretty classically  – but with slight edge.. like his amazing tattoo, “only the strong survive” inked across his chest (zoom in). Jeans: Sean John, Kicks: Coach, Earrings: Diamond Studs.

Haute Boho Funky. Mom and Dad at Drop-Off

Aaron, Tomi & Sid. San Rafael, California. May 2014.

Fashion Notes: They love to find pieces at yard sales, local surf shops and small boutiques for jewelry.  Additionally, they love making their own jewelry as Aaron is a gem prospector – -they love GEMS!

I followed this couple on their way into Whole Foods, they just looked so quintessential Northern California in a GREAT way – They kindly obliged and posed like pros – and I get the benefit of learning about people and getting a sneak peak into their lives… love that.

Sweet Face. Tough Tattoos. Haute Papa.

Joey. San Francisco, California. May 2014.

This dad and his daughter have quite a cute bond..her little pink converse and summer romper is quite stylish, I must say.  And I love Joey’s tattoos paired with such a sweet looking face.

Fashion Notes: Seven Jeans, Oakley Sunglasses, Timberland like Boots and baseball t-shirt.

Axl Rose? Chris Robinson? Must be a Musician Dad at Drop-Off

unnamed

Ponytail Papa. Fairfax, California. November 2013.

Fairfax is a town in Marin County about 30 minutes outside of San Francisco.  It’s a liberal mecca filled with funky stores and lots o’ music.  The town of Fairfax is considered one of the most progressive in Marin County, and not surprising it’s home to many musicians and artists.

As a new resident to the area, Fairfax has taken me in with open arms. Lola’s Depot, a great consignment store always has such cool things, and with a box outside labeled “free”, my kids have become collectors of fabric.. still waiting to see the outcome.

If you want to hear some good music (and believe me, they have some seriously establish musicians playing in Fairfax) and feel the old school bohemian California feeling, hang out in Fairfax..

Fashion Shot by Luna Brown – Luna, a photographer in her teens, has a great eye and I loved hearing about the life of teenagers from Luna and her friend.. Luna has a blog about fashion for her school, check it out.. love love her passion..http://fallfashionfinds.wordpress.com/
