Make-Up at the Gym..like a lot of it

Bela. Marin County. May 2017.

I love Bela, she’s so real and doesn’t hide who she is. Ask any woman if they wear make-up to the gym, most will lie. Here’s my mini-interview with Bela, mom, make-up artist & a whole lot more:

Mara: “In your opinion, what’s the most essential item of make-up you need?”

Bela: “So I can’t just pick one, I feel every girl needs concealer, a touch of blush, defined brows, a little bit of eyeliner (although I cake it on) mascara and powder. My favorite translucent powder is Beauty Counter’s loose powder, it’s great for oily skin.”

Mara: “I’m crying of laughter, this is make-up you would use on a film set, or on Broadway!  And this is your normal, every day routine -So What about BB cream, oils, stuff that you can wear to the gym?”

Bela: “Mara, I mean let me be clear, I do FULL face all day, everyday, gym, no-gym, school drop-off or no school drop-off, EVERYDAY”

Mara: “Can I quote you verbatim on Haute Drop-Off”

Bela: “Hell yea”

Bela and I volunteered together, our job was to put make-up on women in a charity fashion show. The women who sat in my chair, came out looking like they were on serious drugs or they lost in a street fight.  Obviously, I tried to convince them of my theory that, “black and blue makes the eyes appear 20 years younger”, horrified because my lie wasn’t sinking in, I gave Bela the ‘save me’ look, and so she did. Bela dove in and fixed my terrible make-up job.  From then on, I knew she had my back -and we became quick friends.

A row of lower back stars.. and how about this delicious kid? Bela grew up in Southern California, and visits her brother in West Hollywood frequently – apparently, he also is head to toe G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S.

Sexy shoulders.

Loooong legs..and this gorgeous child was so fun and delicious.

I love Bela’s pop of tattoos  – you don’t know she has them – and then they just appear

yum.

Bela knows how to look good for the camera, and I think I should be her agent :).

Those low ankle boots are a 90’s throw back.. love them, flattering and make short cut-off’s look rock-n-roll…(do people still say that?)

When your mama has legs as long as a super model, you hold on to those things for support.

I always had friends much taller than me, it’s always a funny combination. It’s helpful to have tall friends for so many things, especially if you are trying to get the attention of a bartender. They ALWAYS see the tall people first, weird.

And as mothers, we can’t always pose for photographs – I mean, these kids want to do things, they want to climb  – I love how Bela’s holding her daughter’s faux fur jacket, so she can climb the play structure.

Hanging out after church, mother and daughter style.

unnamed-7

I love comparing mother and daughter style. Usually very different, but always being influenced by one another. My mother dresses classic, tailored and chic – I don’t, but somehow I still manage to take something of hers, which looks chic, classic and tailored on her to looking funky, downtown & stylish on me. I’ve cut, ripped and hemmed my mother’s clothing my entire life to suit my style – but the thing is, I still have inherited a piece of her classic look – and for that, I’m so lucky – meaning, if I want to look classy, I know how (don’t laugh)!

Love this tattoo of a lioness (I think)..it’s beautiful and simple in it’s color, and hip.

Rompers are so current – just in this weekend’s New York Times, Fashion of the Times featured Taylor Swift, as the fashion teacher when it comes to rompers. The spread shows New Yorkers on the street, beating the heat in adorable rompers. Naju says this jump suit is the easiest staple to throw on, and still look fashionable running after a toddler.

Floppy hat and glasses… if you want to get dressed in a hurry, and still look so cool.

Haute Drop-Off at the Empire State.

Empire State Building. New York City. April 2015.

DSC_0149

Originally from Korea, this Haute Mama is living in New Jersey with her new baby. We started talking because her friend had a selfie stick, which was so funny to me. I offered to take their photos, and asked to capture her cute look.

DSC_0153

She has managed to make utilitarian clothing look cool – with a baby in the city, you need stuff with you, and comfortable shoes. She makes it all work, especially with that gorgeous smile.

Timberland’s. Huge Gold Hoops. MCM. So HAUTE.

Cheryse. Marin County, California. March 2015.

DSC_0048

When I eyed I huge gold hoops, Timberland’s and an MCM bag inside Nordstrom – I pretty much lunged into Cheryse. She was so sweet, and accommodating to my crazy Mara requests. Like can you put your purchases down, and follow me outside for a brief photo shoot?

The MCM bag is AMAZING.  I can’t wait to be in NYC and see how the cities most fashionable puts together this re-emerging brand.

So Cheryse has fashion smarts – Timberland’s are big again, and popping up on the feet of the most fashionable in major cities.  The new way to wear them? Pair them with a designer bag and a short skirt,  I’ve even seen them with long skirts.

My love for large earrings will never fade..they are just sexy. Large hoops will automatically add some serious appeal. Love this mom’s look – take note. And I can’t wait to rock some Timberland’s with a super short dress!!!!!

Adarsha, Joe and Juniper. MAMA Gallery. Los Angeles. 2015. Photographs by Angela Izzo

Photos: Fashion shots by the INCREDIBLE Angela Izzo. Look forward to another post about Angela’s work. She’s a filmmaker, photographer and creative visionary. Her resume is an impressive one, shooting celebrities, artists, musicians etc..but her unique ability to capture a moment in time, is something I admire greatly. Check out her work, http://www.izzoimages.com

Fashion Notes: Adarsha is wearing an African inspired print dress with gold accessories. Juniper is dressed in J Brand. Joe is wearing a T-shirt from American Apparel.

Red Lips: And lets not forget Adarsha’s red lipstick – a must for every blonde woman! It has to be the right shade, or it looks severe. I’ve tried pulling off red lipstick, and my kids seem traumatized every time I attempt it. I feel to “VA VA VOOM” and like I should be working for Heidi Fleiss. Here are some tips, http://beauty.allwomenstalk.com/dos-and-donts-of-wearing-red-lipstick-that-any-makeup-lover-should-know

Angela 2

Adarsha grew up in Brooklyn in a free spirited family (i’m tight with Adarsha’s sister). Her sophisticated taste in art, design and clothing is inspired by this upbringing.  Being raised in a major city causes accidental exposure. When you walk, take the subway or a public bus – you are constantly observing people  – places – things.

Adarsha founded and directs the recently opened MAMA Gallery in LA. With a diverse range of instillations and exhibits, it’s not surprising that MAMA is the new kid on the block, receiving lots of attention from the Contemporary Art world.

unnamed-3

MAMA Gallery gives a peak at the multi-dimensional world of art – how creativity can be executed using a multitude of materials and mediums.  For major inspiration, check out MAMA in LA, http://www.mama.gallery and for suggestions on current pieces for sale, call the gallery. And you’ll be inspired by Adarsha’s fresh perspective on the Contemporaty Art world.

As a new mom, Adarsha has made the gallery a visual playground for Juniper – pretty inspiring for a child to be surrounded by multi-faceted creative visions.

I’ve been lucky to be exposed to contemporary art by my step-father. I love visiting the galleries in Chelsea, like the Famed Gagosian Gallery, http://www.gagosian.com and have had the privilege of attending Art Basel in Miami most years.  It’s great to see the next generation of galleries popping up with new artists and inspirations.

When in LA, visit MAMA  – I promise you will leave feeling inspired. Art is an investment, but should be purchased when you truly feel connected with the piece.

Sexy Tattoos. Little League is Haute.

Fairfax, California. March 2015.

I love these tattoos. They are stylish and really pretty to observe. Little league is hot! This was taken at the Little League baseball kick off in Fairfax.  It was a parade with floats, 1980’s music blasting and plenty of cool parents. The town is a throw back to the 1950’s – only with a hippie, bohemian vibe – that is special. This area is one of the most non-judgmental places I’ve ever lived – it has that community feeling without the constraints of traditional, conservative values.

This very pretty mama was watching her offspring in the parade, while I quickly snapped photos. Her tattoos are just pretty – and her look is reflective of her body art. I guess no matter what, this mom will always look stylish….I’ve wanted henna type tattoos on my hand for a while, but not sure I can deal with the permanence of a tattoo – What can I say? It’s hard to commit.

Sunday was HAUTE. True Bohemian Style in Marin.

AB 1

Araceli. Marin County. February 2015.

Fashion Notes: I love the gold earrings paired with the gold aviators and petite necklaces.  Araceli unlike most people, can look great in silver and gold jewelry. Her long shiny tresses and glowing skin, add to her eclectic California style.

I first spotted Araceli in a yoga class. I was desparetly trying to look somewhat “California”, with my childhood throwback version of a back bend – let’s just say it didn’t look pretty.  In the front row, a gorgeous woman with tiny bracelets on her wrists and ankles did a back bend with style and grace. Later, I learned Araceli was a Yoga teacher..and I felt a little better about my lack of experience.

AB 2

Bohemian Sundays: It’s so nice to spend a Sunday with friends, while the kids run around outside, with absolutely no presence of technology.  With Abba playing in the background, this is a great example of the uniqueness of Northern California. Just hanging out talking about life, music and of course Seinfeld.

AB 4

How to Wear Crop-Tops: Yes, Araceli is in incredible shape – but the way she’s exposing a sliver of tummy, is a perfect way for all of us to rock a little crop-top situation.  She tied her Forever 21 blouse, www.forever21.com with the knot low, so you can’t see much.  And the high waisted vintage 1970’s skirt, makes everything stay put – meaning no possibility for a little skin rolls (she has none, but you get my point)

AB 3

A little more detail. Check out her gold studded sandals.

April. Marin County. January 2015

Fashion Notes: Boots: Hunter, Puffy Jacket: Add Down

When I see April at school, I like to sing her that Sesame Street song, “one of these things is not like the other”.  She usually gives me a look, but April is so chic and always looks polished, unlike me.  Sometimes I think, if I have to get out of the car due to police interference, I may just refuse – this is what manifests from being late and barely having time to give your kid’s breakfast.  And Neal and Liam are so quick to judge their mama, calling me “girly”, a horrible stereotype, when I put blush and mascara on…. This is where April has saved me.

April owns Dollface Beauty in San Anselmo, California. Dollface does it all…they know me so well there, I’ve been pretty much taken hostage, because according to these beauty experts, my unruly eyebrows were in need of major clean up..I obliged and they look great.

Dollface also provides the most addictive beauty accessory out there….Eyelash extensions.  Yup, these bad boys will cut your “primping” time in half – -they are majorly addictive – because who doesn’t want to look like Cher in the late 1960’s?

The other option, to which Jennifer Aniston is a fan, is making your eyelashes darker…if you have light hair, this will make your eyes look enormous.  Sometimes, when i’m feeling PMSie..I roll into Dollface and someone always makes me feel better – whether it’s a wax, make-up, eyelashes…and when I start getting invited to all the chic parties in San Francisco (hint, hint), Dollface Beauty will make sure I look slammin’.

Rhonda. Miami, Florida. January 2015.

When I spotted Rhonda at this kids jump spot, I pretty much ran after her in a crazy way.  Rhonda made an effort, and someone (Mara Menachem) gosh darn it, had to appreciate all of it.

Fashion Notes: Rhonda owns a clothing boutique, so most of her wardrobe is from the store. Her necklace is from Ross, she only paid $6.00!! The nails are a work of art, and obviously she takes great care of them. I love Rhonda’s modern 1980’s punk-like hair, in collaboration with sexy hot pink lips….and then the jumpsuit paired with white combat boots.  The Chanel-like cross body bag ties this look together.

What I appreciate so much about Rhonda, is her individuality which is evident via her style.   Fashion, to me, is about expressing your individuality through clothing and accessories.  Rhonda’s “got it” – she knows how to make a $6.00 necklace look like a million dollars..it could also be her sexy smile.
