Love these matte ankle rain boots paired with socks up to the calf. I’m a huge fan of pairing socks with any type of shoe, I get made fun of for it – but I don’t care. My theory is if Parisian women are pulling it off – so can I.

All black is always chic – but adding these socks makes this look funky and stylish. With summer coming soon, throw out your levi cut off’s with ankle socks and flats.. it’s a great way to take away from the sexiness of the short shorts. Here’s an example:

Fashion Notes: Seven jeans cut by me, Chanel Flats, Black ankle socks, Bohemian bag from Barcelona, Top from Anthropologie, Glasses are Ray Ban in green, earrings from India

My Chanel flats were stolen in my luggage at JFK  – I miss them. You can wear them with anything and automatically it adds some chicness to an otherwise grungy outfit (which is usually my look). Just ask Alexa Chung, the hip British model and style icon. Alexa wears her Chanel flats with everything – and still manages to look edgy/Downtown and not Upper East Side.

Fashion Designer Mama. Sexy in Halter Dresses.

Rebecca Bruce. Designer. Mill Valley, California. September 2015.

See what happens when your kids play soccer? You meet fashion designer mothers, who have cool bikes, and look like models.

unnamed-3

Bay Area Fashion Designer and Mama, Rebecca Bruce has been designing ready-to-wear since 1986…Shown here in her own halter dress design.

Rebecca’s work has been showcased in film, on CNN, at SFMOMA’s ModernArt Ball and California’s Top Ten Designers Fusion Show in L.A. Including publications, The San Francisco Chronicle, Essence, W and Elle. Check out her work, http://www.rebeccabruce.com

Rebecca has a showroom in Mill Valley, where you can try on her pieces and feel her imported fabrics, ranging from mohair to the finest wool and cashmere.

I love how I look totally dorky wearing a helmet and leaning against my uncool bike – but Rebecca looks opposite.  A great mix of California laid back style infused with that Northern Cali outdoor style… she does it so well..

unnamed-6

Now that’s a gorgeous back. Rebecca is lucky, and she’s also a former model. Great Genes!! I never loved the way I look in a halter dress, so I especially admire women who can pull it off….WHY CAN’T I.. WHY!!!!!!!!!!  (a little funny?)

Nancy 5

Nancy. Mom. Writer. Lawyer. Singer. New Yorker. February 2015. Marin County.

If you know me at all, you will know I’m a jean jacket freak, I have so many, but usually wear the same one on repeat for a month and switch to the next denim jacket perfection. One of the reasons I moved out of Miami, was so I could wear my jackets every day – oh and because my hair looks so good in California (I’m kidding).

Nancy is wearing an insane fringe jean jacket from the store Calypso, http://www.calypsostbarth.com  – Calypso has stores in several locations, Nancy purchased this bad boy at The Marin Country Mart..an outdoor shopping/eating spot with some seriously good and expensive stores, like Intermix, www.intermix.com

Nancy’s bag is a classic and funky Balenciaga “City” Bag. I always loved this Balenciaga pocketbook, http://www.balenciaga.com/, because it makes any look a little more urban cool.  When you are wearing work out clothing, this bag adds excitement to what can be boring.

Remember all this excitement, doesn’t come cheap.  Balenciaga handbags start at around $1,000. The best shoppers I know, aren’t rich – but they usually (unlike impulsive me) buy a few good pieces, and it’s worth the investment. I’ve never sold a bag before, but people have great success consigning designer handbags. And I’ve had great success buying used designer goods.

Nancy’s motorcycle boots are by Ash, www.ash.com – the same brand that designed my famous gold studded kicks.

Nancy is a writer, attorney and singer. I just saw her perform on stage singing an incredible version of Corinne Bailey Rae’s Like a Star.  Nancy is a New Yorker through and through, and now makes Marin County her home, with her family, including two young kids. When my kid’s music teacher told me about Nancy’s website, I immediately started stalking…I needed her as a friend, and it worked.  Check out Nancy’s take on living in the Bay Area, she gives great tips, shares some pretty deep stuff, and the not so deep.  www.nycgirlbythebay.com

April. Marin County. January 2015

Fashion Notes: Boots: Hunter, Puffy Jacket: Add Down

When I see April at school, I like to sing her that Sesame Street song, “one of these things is not like the other”.  She usually gives me a look, but April is so chic and always looks polished, unlike me.  Sometimes I think, if I have to get out of the car due to police interference, I may just refuse – this is what manifests from being late and barely having time to give your kid’s breakfast.  And Neal and Liam are so quick to judge their mama, calling me “girly”, a horrible stereotype, when I put blush and mascara on…. This is where April has saved me.

April owns Dollface Beauty in San Anselmo, California. Dollface does it all…they know me so well there, I’ve been pretty much taken hostage, because according to these beauty experts, my unruly eyebrows were in need of major clean up..I obliged and they look great.

Dollface also provides the most addictive beauty accessory out there….Eyelash extensions.  Yup, these bad boys will cut your “primping” time in half – -they are majorly addictive – because who doesn’t want to look like Cher in the late 1960’s?

The other option, to which Jennifer Aniston is a fan, is making your eyelashes darker…if you have light hair, this will make your eyes look enormous.  Sometimes, when i’m feeling PMSie..I roll into Dollface and someone always makes me feel better – whether it’s a wax, make-up, eyelashes…and when I start getting invited to all the chic parties in San Francisco (hint, hint), Dollface Beauty will make sure I look slammin’.

Haute Papa at COSTCO. Yup, Mara has no Shame.

Darryl. Marin County Costco. (California) January 2015

Fashion Notes: Arm Ink: In Seattle at Slave to the Needle, fitted button down: Scotch & Soda, Shoes: Cole Haan for Nike, Jeans: Seven.

I normally attest Costco, and find myself annoyed at spending time at a land of consumerism with no windows and items in bulk. It seems so American over consumption..and maybe I sound snobby, but I will tell you I actually had a great time running around Costco this week.  I snacked on delicious Marconi almonds and found a cool looking dad for Haute Drop Off.

I imagine Darryl didn’t expect to be accosted by a fellow Costco shopper, especially one walking around aimlessly quite distracted by all the choices.  But he let me take some shots, and he even re-located to the Mini-Wheats for the Costco photo shoot.

Then, people started asking me for samples, so I ripped open the huge bag of organic dried apples.  I was so good at passing out samples, until a Costco “employee” informed me that I really was stealing merchandise, and needed to leave. (yea, I know, it’s shocking, especially when I was doing a good deed)

Darryl recently re-located from Seattle to Marin County with his family.  He works at Intel as an Engineer.

She Must be French.. Coffee, Cigarettes, NY Times & Fashion

DSC_0040Sharon. Marin Country Mart. Larkspur, California. November 2014.

Fashion Notes: Faux Fur Vest: Calypso and Intermix “boyfriend” sweater

Not like you’ll be surprised, but I stalk the fashionable. Sharon, sitting quietly with cigarette in hand, reading The New York Times—-dressed to kill. I walked by her several times, because this type of fashion sighting in Marin County must be a mirage.  But much to my pleasure, this fashion lover is real – and she’s American.

Rarely, do you see public smoking in the States..only late at night outside of bars. But day time smoking at an upscale shopping area is quite rare.  Obviously, I’m not condoning smoking at all, but understand why I made the assumption that this stylish woman was French.  Sharon even has a fancy cigarette case.

After I did my Mara weird walk by, I finally had to tell Sharon that I worship her look.  It was more like: Who are you? Where do you live? Can we hang out?  And may I photograph you? Even with my strange questions, Sharon obliged.

It turns out she is part of an incredible team at a high stylin’ store in the Marin County.  Sharon loves fashion, and refuses to fall into a trap of “casual clothing”.  She’s a city girl at heart, and I appreciate her fashion dedication.

This is part of my Mara Likes series…just photographing “Haute” things and people I find interesting.
