Haute Punk. Chelsea Flea.

Chelsea. NYC. Summer 2017.

While I was walking around, in and out of the Gay Pride Parade, I stopped at Chelsea Flea Market. This man, who has been a fixture for so many years in Chelsea, has become known for his Punk style. New York City is made up of small neighborhoods, and like any small town, you get to know the locals.

I want that leather vest – – “G-D save the queen”

My mom used to put me in tiny plaid, pleated skirts – still love them, because they can be so East Coast preppy, and so Punk. It’s all about the accessories.

It’s a Spike Lee, Do The Right Thing kinda’ Summer..

Emiko. Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. July 2015.

Brooklyn as a Film: It’s been so fun hanging in NYC the past couple of weeks – well except for the stifling heat. I keep picturing Spike Lee’s film, Do The Right Thing – which takes place in Brooklyn during a very hot summer. That film vividly describes the kind of heat you feel existing in a New York summer.

I watched this film several times, but the most memorable was in a college Film class – where we analyzed, wrote, discussed and debated each scene from the film.  The sexual nature of the ice scene, the racial tension in Brooklyn and how brilliantly Spike Lee depicts the humanity in all people – bigots or not. And how Lee demonstrates the heat one Brooklyn summer so well, while watching you can literally feel the sun blazing down on your face – even in a dark, cold movie theater.

Haute Mamas Live your Dreams. Urban Bohemian Kadia.

11287291_10152868646828616_1695969122_n

Kadia. New York City. May 2015.

We have a lot of dreams, even as moms and Kadia is living them..we should all remember that even having the huge responsibility of kids, shouldn’t stop us from reaching for our desires and passions..it’s obviously a great excuse, but in the long run, it may lead to regret.

Tell Me More Kadia: I was born in Bern, Switzerland to father Bosar, a Jazz musician of Yemeni-Israeli decent and Swiss mother Verena, a peace activist. I graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York. I am currently working with Mary Boyer of MTB Studio on a weekly basis and at The Cinematic Fight Studio perfecting my skills in Combat, Full Contact Martial Arts, Kick Boxing, Swords, Fire Arms and Archery. I am also a yoga instructor, Medic and fluently speak English, Hebrew, German and Swiss German.

kadia

Kadia, seen here with her three kids, hanging on a Sunday in NYC. Kadia is signed on to a major acting agent, and is working so hard to live her creative dream. Check her acting out here, www.kadiasaraf.com

Kadia is a mom who inspires me – she left a tough situation after getting sick, and went back to her lifelong dream of acting. IT’s not easy, but Kadia is living the life she wants, and it takes a lot of courage to leave the comforts of a certain life, and dive head first into a life less predictable.  Like raising three kids alone, while pursuing an acting career and teaching yoga.

Kadia dresses like a free spirit, and most of her clothing is from Free People, www.freepeople.com

Kadia makes her own dreamcatcher necklaces and dreamcatchers, which she sells at Rain Shop on Etsy. Kadia is like me, she wears gold hoops and accessories while doing yoga..I so appreciate that.

Floral sneakers are by Etnies.

Kadia is always on the run, so she needs comfortable shoes living in an urban jungle…

How do you make time for yourself? I make sure to leave time for me so I get up at 5:55 a.m.  and meditate, write my gratitude and affirmations. After, I do the drop off I run for an hour, only then I start addressing the world.

I have to say, I wish I was consistent about waking up early to write or workout.  It gives you time to yourself, and you are ready to deal with the day—because you already accomplished so much.  Kadia has created structure, and it obviously works.

Kadia’s external strength is due to her internal strength. Learning more about Kadia makes me realize that nothing should stop ME from pursuing my dreams – determination and persistence are key, and excuses don’t work.  Sometimes we say we’re too old, We’re too young, we have kids, we need to go back to school, we’re overweight..whatever the case may be, I feel bad that I’ve let certain things stop me…and I hope I will think of a mom like Kadia, who is working hard, facing rejection, getting up at the crack of dawn..all to be who she wants to be… oh and she’s raising three kids alone.

Haute Brooklyn Family. Fanny Packs all Around at Drop-Off.

unnamed-14

Evan. Sage. Ashley and Oscar. Williamsburg, Brooklyn. October 2014.

Such a Haute Brooklyn family we have here!! Well, we all can agree, if they’re wearing fanny packs in Williamsburg, the comeback is real and hip.  After writing my article on the pros of the fanny pack, published in The Huffington Post Comedy section, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mara-menachem/i-love-fanny-packs-and-im_b_5791738.html (not sure why they thought it was funny, fanny packs are no joking matter), I received several lovely correspondence from people who agreed with my highly complicated break down of this throw back accessory.  One of the fans of my piece is Michael, the owner of Jaunt.  Jaunt creates stylish and functional fanny packs, locally in Brooklyn.

Michael explains his company, “Jaunt is a New York City fashion company that makes beautifully crafted fanny packs. Contrary to the traditional big and bulky fanny packs, Jaunt packs are slim, sleek, and meticulously designed with purposed pockets for only the bare essentials needed for adventures. The minimalist design of the Jaunt pack is meant to help “jaunters” be less bogged down with what what they are carrying so they can connect more with the moments at hand. “Walk Slow, Dance Fast” is the mantra, or soul, of the company”.

It seems to me that Jaunt is a trail blazer or shall I say fanny blazer – in bringing back this amazing accessory, without the poking fun – ya see Jaunt is, along with many in the fashion industry  – making fanny packs not only cool and hip, but affordable!! Check out Jaunt’s website, where a video shares Jaunt’s story – and you can see stylin’ music festival attendees sporting their fanny packs.  http://jauntshop.com

Love this dad’s Miami Heat hat..see Miami is “cool” even in NYC. And I kind of dig with both ears pierced..

Haute East Village. Joe’s Pizza Drop-Off.

DSC_1726Greenwich Village, New York. June 2014.

How cute is this little family? I spotted them hanging outside one of my favorite NYC spots, Joe’s Pizza, http://www.joespizzanyc.com  Joe’s is an old friend, sometimes it’s a long stretch of not talking, but once you re-connect, it’s just like old times – even at 3am.

The staff at Joe’s are friendly and fun – and the place is always swarming with the greatest characters – famous and not famous.  A place like Joe’s is what makes the Village such a special place – it’s a neighborhood, a community and filled with love and great personalities – – oh and of course delicious and authentic New York Pizza.
