Drummer Gig Worthy Shorts, Finally.

Mill Valley, CA. May 2017. Drummer. Dad.

I try not to be judgmental about clothing. But I do like to see a little attempt at style when checking out bands..like I made a slight, low key effort. I realize for drummers, it’s hot and sweaty and they need the stamina of a long distance runner and street fighter. They should be comfortable, right? maybe I should design a line of stylin’drummer stage wear made with hidden lycra? I digress.. so I DO understand the desire for drummers to wear shorts on stage – which is hard to pull off. Here’s an example of a drummer who pulls off shorts, he’s at a carnival with his kid – not on stage, but it works for both situations.

This dad and drummer likes to wear all black. He keeps it simple in black denim. Vintage Levi vests are flying off the shelves at high end stores and Goodwill’s across the country.

When someone has leg tattoos, they are all “in” – this is the real deal.

he could totally wear this look while performing – it’s cool, low key – but still has the level of “I care about style”.

Matching hats!

He’s so Cool. Rock-n-Roll Daddy.

Toby. San Rafael. 2015.

Doesn’t Toby look like a rock star?  He is, he’s a 5th grade teacher with a tremendous passion for music.

We met Toby at The Sweetwater Music Hall, owned by Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead. It was before moving to Marin, and I couldn’t believe my luck to find such an amazing music venue – Miami had hardly any. It was comforting to meet Toby, and realize he had hung at my childhood house with one of my brothers – probably listening to punk and jamming on my brother’s Ludwig (I can’t use the word “jamming” without sounding like a total dork).

Originally from Miami, Toby carries that Miami swagger in combination with a Rock-n-Roll look, very present in Northern California.

Toby, his wife Kathleen and his crew continue to be active in the Bay Area music scene – and having kids hasn’t slowed them down – their daughter is exposed to huge amounts of music and has been a part of the music community since inception. Wouldn’t you love to have this guy as your teacher?

Toby proves you can be a dad and a rock star -it’s amazing to see a passion like music shared with the next generation. It’s kind of like me sharing my love of donuts with my boys – it’s such a passion of mine, and I feel like I’m giving them so much – sprinkles, sugar, fat, stomach aches….

Jeremy. Dad. Musician. Fairfax, California. January 2015.

If anyone could be a style poster child for Fairfax, a bohemian town in Marin County, California–Jeremy would be it. Jeremy has the soul of an artist, and now the soul of a daddy. Jeremy is a musician, playing guitar and singing in the band San Geronimo.  I first heard this band play at a bar, that to me, seemed like it had to be fake and on some movie set. But it wasn’t, this place called Rancho Nicasio is deep in Marin County, and feels like what my image of a 1960 rural hippie town would appear to be.  I even spotted an identical human replica of David Crosby.

Jeremy’s voice is brooding and captivating, but I’m not really a music critic.  What I do know, is that their version of Lyle Lovett’s If I had a Boat will touch you deeply..and make you fall in love with their sound. San Geronimo plays every Thursday at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, owned by famed Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh.  They’ve played at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, as well as many other Bay Area venues.  Click the link below, to check them out:

Haute Malibu. Actor-Surfer-Cowboy-Cool Dad at Drop-Off.

unnamed-6Rodger Halston. Dad. Actor. Malibu, California. December 2014.

Fashion Notes: Rodger, Shoes: Clarks, Jeans: Levis, Flannel: Abercrombie, Vest: One Star, Sunglasses: Ray Ban. Avalon, Kicks: Converse, Jeans: Joe’s Jeans, Vest: Pop Out, Tank Top and Back Pack: Roxy

About: Rodger and family live in Malibu, where he takes advantage of the California life style.  His talents are abundant…. Actor, Musician, Singer, Surfer, Skateboarder, Cowboy, Writer, Producer, Director, Motivational Speaker and DAD.  I don’t know what it means to be a cowboy, but it sounds pretty fun.

Hair: I mean can this dad get any cooler? Rodger is a great looking dude, with major style and an awesome beard.  I have this beard style philosophy  – it can’t be neat or overly trimmed. A beard I like, is more free spirited in its presentation.  A little messy and unruly, but only slightly…Rodger has perfected my beard ideal. The long, straight hair reminds me of late 70’s folk rock hair…it just fits this dad well, and man is he lucky!

Style: I love the fitted vest with a little plaid peaking though – -and the thick wrist cuff.  A great example for men on how to wear accessories. The rolled sleeve is a great way to add some masculinity to any look – especially when its plaid.

Film: Below is a photo of Rodger from his upcoming Universal Pictures film, Scorpion King Quest for Power.  Check out this stylin’ dad in his new film coming out in January.

Ponytail Papa. Fairfax, California. November 2013.

Fairfax is a town in Marin County about 30 minutes outside of San Francisco.  It’s a liberal mecca filled with funky stores and lots o’ music.  The town of Fairfax is considered one of the most progressive in Marin County, and not surprising it’s home to many musicians and artists.

As a new resident to the area, Fairfax has taken me in with open arms. Lola’s Depot, a great consignment store always has such cool things, and with a box outside labeled “free”, my kids have become collectors of fabric.. still waiting to see the outcome.

If you want to hear some good music (and believe me, they have some seriously establish musicians playing in Fairfax) and feel the old school bohemian California feeling, hang out in Fairfax..

Fashion Shot by Luna Brown – Luna, a photographer in her teens, has a great eye and I loved hearing about the life of teenagers from Luna and her friend.. Luna has a blog about fashion for her school, check it out.. love love her passion..http://fallfashionfinds.wordpress.com/
