Denim Part Deux & This is no Britney/Justin circa 2001…

Denim on Denim. Canadian Tuxedo. Jean Suit. Denim Tuxedo. Whatever you call it, this is my style. I live in denim, always have. So what do you think, Hot or not? Here are so many photos of me (what? you had enough?) in another jean on jean look.. notice the different shades of denim and my accessories…it makes my denim suit look less “suit” and more funky and stylish.. nothing “polished” about this look at all.. which I like.

Fashion Notes: Jeans: 7 for all Mankind, Shoes: Proenza Schouler, Bag: 1970’s Coach re-furbished from Barney’s NY, Denim top: J.Crew (cut by me), Crop top: Zara, Glasses: Madewell

Here’s how to avoid the Britney/Justin 2001 jean tuxedo look, https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2015/apr/02/double-denim-is-back-in-fashion-and-this-is-how-to-wear-it-oz-stylewatch

In case you didn’t read my tips in my first post, here’s the key to pulling off, well really what I wear daily

Mix colors: I think it looks cooler to wear many different colors, like Joseph and his technicolor dream coat 🙂

Mix fabrics: so some denim is worn in and some denim is very dense.. it looks stylin’ to have all those fabrics blended. So a beat up jacket with holes paired with dark blue and stiff jeans.

Accessorize: Add color and/or lots of gold like me. Now that you are wearing all jean, throw some jewelry on and over do it..you can, believe me. Either silver or gold or a bright beaded necklace like I have from Colombia..go for it.

Bags/Shoes: Again, have fun here. You can get away with so much, like wearing high heels in bright red or white – especially if you are wearing jeans with holes. I love wearing a fancy bag like a Chanel or anything with gold hardware or even a fancy clutch with head to toe denim.. it gives cool style immediately. And it’s more fun to take something polished and make it a little less polished…

Opposites Attract: ..and the same works in regard to style. High/Low, Soft/Hard, Formal/Informal…

Men: You can pull this off so well, just make sure someone approves those jeans, must fit well, especially in the booty – although I kind of love a little sagging, if you can get away with it..throw on a cool jean jacket, maybe a beat up one, or a really dark denim paired with ripped jeans or an old denim work shirt.. you’ll stop traffic, believe me

This bag – -it’s so good!! But you can also change the entire look by wearing a bag with a lot more bling and/or logos.

Blue and gold look great together…

Parisians think Brooklyn Style is HAUTE

DSC_0091

Thomas Palauqui. Marin Country Mart. Marin County. February 2016.

Is Thomas from Brooklyn or Paris? It’s unclear, and I’m onto something here. Parisian men are influenced by Brooklyn style, and do it well.. the American urban style mixed with Parisian tailoring is an alluring combination. Thomas is dressed quite casually, but he’s given his look some thought…and yes, he’s French.

Vogue wrote about Brooklyn’s street style and its influence on Parisian men…. http://www.vogue.com/13354833/paris-brooklyn-men-street-style/

DSC_0093

Thomas is General Manager of Monsieur Benjamin, http://www.monsieurbenjamin.com a modern Parisian restaurant and bar in San Francisco.

DSC_0090

Thomas isn’t wearing any French designers, he’s in American designs -but Thomas puts them together in a very French manner. From the collar up to his chic diaper bag (aka man diaper bag).

Fashion Notes: Jean Jacket: GAP 1969, Pants & Sweater: J.Crew, Kicks: New Balance, Sunglasses: Ray Ban

DSC_0094

See guys, you don’t always have to hem your pants..they look cool a little loose…

DSC_0097

I always love a pair of old school New Balance sneakers..it’s a good option, if you are confused which sneakers to buy..always go simple.

Men, Fitted Clothing is Haute. French Dudes know.

Noe Valley Farmers Market. San Francisco. February 2015. iPhone shot.

Fashion Notes:  I knew this couple had to be French, and I was right, at least about the dad. He explained how he mostly wears one brand of clothing, J.Crew, www.jcrew.com. The reason he wears mostly J.Crew is because the clothing fits like French brands – slim and narrow.  I tell guys all the time, the narrower the better. Sunglasses, Ray Ban Wayfarers, www.rayban.com

Men’s Tailoring: I can’t emphasize enough the importance of well fitted clothing for men. It doesn’t matter your size – it’s always better for clothing to fit narrower. Ralph Lauren gave his daughter Dylan advice a long time ago – when you feel like you’ve gained weight – wear your clothing even narrower, don’t bury yourself in baggy clothing, because it will make you look heavier. My own father wore his suits extremely narrow, and I spent a lot of my childhood sitting on the floor of his seamstresses’s floor playing with knitting needles. When it comes to casual clothing, it’s the same idea – jeans should fit VERY narrow, show off those strong legs guys!

Carla and Jon. San Anselmo, California. November 2014.

Fashion Notes: Carla: Leather Jacket: Obey, Sweater: Madewell, Tank (worn as dress): Michael Stars, Boots: Betsy Johnson. Jon: Jacket: Levi’s, Pants and Top: J.Crew, Boots: Ariat

I was minding my own business shopping at the local consignment store Sax, when this family walked by – I dropped my newly purchased ankle boots, and lunged at them.  It was a rare sighting for a Sunday in this Marin County town….. Carla is a photographer and artist. They live in Marin County with their offspring, who was on her way to ballet.

I love Carla’s bun – it’s so high and chic, but you can tell she has wavy hair – so it’s also wild and free…she happens to be beautiful and pulls it off amazingly well. What can I say, this was an exciting day for me. The combination of Jon’s red pants and black boots, all work so well.  It’s nice to see a family in “fashion partnership”.

Dena Has EIGHT Kids. Yup. That’s Haute.

unnamedimg-thing

Dena. Atlanta, Georgia. November 2014.

Fashion Notes: plaid button down: J.Crew, A-Line Skirt: Anthropology, Boots: purchased in Italy, Bag: Chloe Mini Marcie. Kids: Oillily (via hand me downs)

Dena has 8 kids ranging in age – she’s very young too! Married to a prestigious Rabbi, Dena embraces the traditions of Judaism..all while being stylish.  Personally, I have no idea how Dena manages to get dressed, let alone look amazing.  But the secret to having so many children — you have lots of older siblings who act like mini-assisitants. I hear one of her kids does hair and make-up on her mom before school drop-off 🙂

A-Line skirts are tough to pull off.  I’ve tried and feel it makes me look like I have large hips.  I happen to be narrow in the hip department (it all seemed to travel to my boobs) and don’t need to look full on bottom and top.  For women like Dena, who are narrow on top – A-line skirts look amazing.  I would pair it with a fitted top to avoid looking hefty…Dena rocks it well.

When I was living in Atlanta, and miserable, Dena befriended me. She didn’t even mind my mini skirts showing up at her Shabbat dinners – no judgement, they just wanted me to embrace my culture, even though I explained several times that I’m not Jewish, they didn’t believe me (weird).  Dena even took me to the Mikveh, where my naked body was inspected by an older Jewish woman.  In a Mikveh, you’re not supposed to chat, but I had to know, what did this woman think of my body?

Dena elbowed me quite aggressively to stop my chatter, this was supposed to be a spiritual experience and I was messing it up with my commentary.  Finally, my body was “approved”, the woman tapped me on my head and said something about me being kosher.  It was then, I was told to dive into a pool of “special” water and completely go under.

For women, the purpose of the Mikveh is to achieve “purity” after menstruation.  After, you are supposed to make a baby.  I failed, because my boyfriend (before we were married) and I had a huge fight, and I kept yelling “you are ruining my spiritual moment”.

Dena claims I’m changing the details to add humor.  Quite possible as I am a master exaggerator, but  I don’t know, this is how I recall my Mikveh moment.  I’m still waiting for the Mikveh ladies opinion on my body, she hasn’t returned any of my calls.

Little White Pocketbooks are so Haute. Aspen Drop-Off.

Caryn. Aspen, Colorado. August 2014.

Caryn likes quality, as I assessed during our conversation about fashion.  Residing in Miami with her husband and two kids, Caryn was another lucky mama able to enjoy the incredible Aspen summer.  When I talk about Aspen, I feel a little weird, because it sounds a bit out of touch..and I get that most people aren’t using “summering” as a verb – i’m certainly not.

Like i’ve mentioned before, Miami is brutal in the summer and people who can escape the humidity to hike, bike and be outside in gorgeous Aspen – definitely take full advantage. This is why Aspen is filled with Dallas and Miami visitors in the summer – they all need an escape.   Aspen is a town filled with high end stores, amazing thrift shops (I will share my finds soon), music festivals (mostly classical and Jazz), bars, free buses etc… It’s a gift to be able to breathe the fresh air in the summer and spend time with my family.

And talk about music..besides the incredible musicians you hear all over town, studying at the prestigious Aspen Music School, Aspen is also home to the iconic Belly Up.  Belly Up is a special place to hear music in an intimate setting.  We saw Ryan Adams, Super Diamond (The Neil Diamond cover band) and Aimee Mann and Ted Leo.  Every night at Belly Up is another impressive band..some less known..some famous..but all really unique and talented.  And back to fashion….

I LOVE Caryn’s white Celine handbag.  White “pocketbooks” were really big this summer, I got an amazing one..and will be wearing it all year, winter white baby! And I’m pretty confident white leather boots, will be worn on the most fashionable feet this fall….

Fashion Notes: Handbag: Celine, Shorts: J.Crew, Cashmere Sweater: Chan Luu, purchased at the boutique 02 Aspen, Sunglasses: Prada, Watch: Cartier and Flip-Flops: Louis Vuitton

Dr. Joy Jacobs. Mom. Psychologist. Fashion Lover. Southern California. June 2014.

Fashion Notes: Ray Ban sunglasses, Forever 21 boyfriend jeans, J. Crew belt, Celine bag, Converse, designed by Commes de Garçon.

What I really appreciate about Joy, is her openness about her career choices in life..and sharing the truth behind finding what you truly love in life, outside of being a mother.  I usually don’t do this, but I’m sharing Joy’s words verbatim…Because anyone who spent three years at Harvard Law, because they refuse to quit, is impressive in my book.

“As a shrink and fashion lover, I believe that nothing says more about where we are in our lives and who we are than our fashion choices.  I love to explore the psychology behind fashion and what it means.  I have had a very unorthodox career path.  I grew up in a family of lawyers and went to law school right out of college.  I suffered through three years at Harvard Law because I am not a “quitter”.

I hated every day of law and the NY firm that I went to after graduation happened to be located literally right next to Barneys.  My whole paycheck went there!  I quickly realized I was not going to figure out what I “really” wanted to do with my life working 100 hr weeks and getting zero sleep and spending my whole paycheck on clothes trying to soothe my tortured soul.

After winding my way in the publishing world in New York for a couple of years, I landed at Vogue.  It was heaven for someone who adored fashion …you can imagine.  Finally, I decided I wanted to go back to school and study psychology–something that had always been of deep interest to me.

I ended up in San Diego because I got a fellowship to study obesity and eating disorders.  I believe you cannot love fashion and be unaware of the constant push/pull around body image and health.  I am now a clinical psychologist specializing in all eating and weight related issues.

The saving grace for me as a fashion lover in SoCal has been the internet.  Without it I could not function.  What I miss most is the energy of NYC and street fashion.  Wedge sneakers are only now making their way here…about 3 years too late!”.

Raj and Izzy. Upper East Side of New York City. April 2014.

Raj is a finance guru, not sure how he does it, but he makes people money.  He does a lot of research and uses his Ivy League education well..Raj grew up in Southern California, but has spent most of his life on the East Coast.  I’ve never seen Raj look unkempt – even when the dude jogs he looks like he belongs in a J.Crew catalog.

Raj used to cruise around in a vintage, apple red Vespa–which he sold to my brother, but he looked pretty cool riding around NYC  -now he’s a dad sporting a baby carrier, and carries it well, almost like a page out of Details Magazine.

Fashion Notes: Jeans: Adriano Goldschmied, Loafers: Camper, Shirt: custom (of course), Baby Carrier: Britax

I would take some tips from Raj Fellas – custom made shirts are so worth the price, a fitted button down looks amazing and well made – quality over quantity!

Rock-n-Roll Haute Chef Dad. LA Drop-Off.

Vinny Dotolo. Los Angeles, California. January 2014.

Los Angeles chef Vinny Dotolo, along with his partner Jon Shook are the owners of Animal, Son of a Gun and Trois Mec in Los Angeles. Vinny is also married to one of my closest peeps, Sarah Hendler, who has been featured on Haute Drop-Off.  A rock star award winning chef, author, Food Network star and now a dad, Vinny is a busy man who appreciates style.

Fashion Notes:  Tattoo Sleeve: By famed artist, Steve Cannon, Denim Button Down: APC (an amazing French brand, i’ve always loved), Pants: J.Crew, Very Fancy Slippers: Bottega Veneta

Let’s discuss Bottega Veneta..I adore their bags, but they are a financial investment..the quality in the bag is worth the price, and their designs are classic.  Actually, Vinny’s wife Sarah found a vintage Bottega handbag in a lonely thrift shop on the road… she has an eye that one. Sarah designs one of a kind jewelry  – she’s been a collector for years, and is finally giving us all a piece of her great taste. Check out Sarah’s stuff, www.sarahhendler.com.

When in LA check out one of Vinny and Jon’s restaurants…poor planners like me have a problem getting into famed establishments, so don’t be like me, plan ahead and eat well!! Visit their site, http://animalrestaurant.com
