These $130 Sweats make my Butt look Weird…

Marin County. May 2017.

So, I’m going to show you how I wear sweatpants.  I style them in a way that represents my style: imperfect, funky & disheveled . When I wear them, I use a lot of accessories to balance out how unflattering they are to a women’s body.

You guys have heard me wonder out loud, “how the hell did I pay $130 for these sweats?” – but considering they serve as sleep wear and day wear, I got a pretty good deal on these bad boys..

I have so much going on here, let’s begin with the labels

Leg Warmers: Target, Flats: Chanel, Sweats: Free City https://freecitysupershop.com, Bag: Urban Zen https://www.urbanzen.com (Donna Karan’s Urban Zen), Denim shirt (cut unevenly by me): Holding Horses, Personalized Door Knockers: https://melodyehsani.com Top: Adidas, Sunglasses: Made Well (they already broke!)

Donna Karan’s Urban Zen is the designers website bringing together her favorite things – The items are carefully sourced, made ethically and usually go toward supporting a worthwhile cause. This bag is enormous  – it fits my laptop, camera etc.. it was a gift for my mother, but after someone nearly tripped on the fringe, she mailed it back to me.

So let’s talk. I’m always half way between just working out and going to get my kids from school. Often, I question the point of showering and getting dressed at all, when the people I see are usually sitting at a coffee shop staring into their laptops. Sometimes, I miss the challenge of living someplace where everyones style game is on point – because then I want to step it up.

I love being comfortable. Believe me, I wear these sweats to sleep and in public. Here’s how I make them look less doubty.. I wear this to spinning class, I just throw my flats in the locker and switch to the spinning shoes. Yoga and spinning are perfect workouts for people who hate ugly sneakers…. like me!!

My butt looks terrible in these sweats. I’m posting this angle to explain that for me, at least, comfort is sometimes more important.. I know, shocking.

Told you the bag is huge!! Good thing about being short, is you can get away with wearing ridiculously big bags- It wasn’t the Olsen twins who started that trend – but I’ll make the reference.

Leg warmers are accessories for your feet and legs, they can take a simple look, and make it funky or make you feel like you are ready to dance on stage.

And that’s my dorky face..

Sock Action is Haute…

Love these matte ankle rain boots paired with socks up to the calf. I’m a huge fan of pairing socks with any type of shoe, I get made fun of for it – but I don’t care. My theory is if Parisian women are pulling it off – so can I.

DSC_0014

All black is always chic – but adding these socks makes this look funky and stylish. With summer coming soon, throw out your levi cut off’s with ankle socks and flats.. it’s a great way to take away from the sexiness of the short shorts. Here’s an example:

IMG_4356

Fashion Notes: Seven jeans cut by me, Chanel Flats, Black ankle socks, Bohemian bag from Barcelona, Top from Anthropologie, Glasses are Ray Ban in green, earrings from India

My Chanel flats were stolen in my luggage at JFK  – I miss them. You can wear them with anything and automatically it adds some chicness to an otherwise grungy outfit (which is usually my look). Just ask Alexa Chung, the hip British model and style icon. Alexa wears her Chanel flats with everything – and still manages to look edgy/Downtown and not Upper East Side.

Feeling Exposed, My Workout Style…

DSC_0163

Fashion Notes: Minnetonka moccasins, Lululemon Boogie shorts, Bag purchased in Barcelona, Uniqlo puffy jacket in navy.

I’ve come to the realization that I actually am that person, that “mom” who wears workout clothing every day – even without working out. Is it the support of the spandex, which offers me comfort? Whatever it may be, I still get stopped quite frequently (don’t roll your eyes), complimenting me on my different looks. It always surprises me, because I’m not even wearing proper clothing. If I lived in NYC, London or Paris – no chance I would spend my days in leggings..but I live somewhere, where it’s more acceptable. But it does get boring staring at a sea of Patagonia jackets and Lululemon leggings, and of course “reasonable” sneakers.  So once again, I put together a few looks on what I wear to make my workout clothing sexier, cooler and most importantly stylish.

So these looks are exaggerated, I’m sucking in and only showing you my best angles..When I leave the gym, I change – I add accessories, change my shoes etc.. I know it’s gross that I don’t shower, but who has time?  For more of my workout style tips..http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mara-menachem/how-to-be-a-style-icon-in_b_4898418.html

Fashion Notes: Adidas slides, Chloe T-shirt, Leggings from TJ Max, Chanel Classic bag, Ralph Lauren vintage blue blazer (courtesy of one of my brother’s Bar Mitzvah’s), Door Knocker Earrings from Amazon, Socks??

Yes, Adidas slides are cool! The Adidas slides have been huge in Paris for a while now, especially worn with skirts. The problem for me, is that most people don’t know or care about style..so they see me walking around with socks and slides, and assume I’m a lunatic – which I am, but I also have a “look” – which usually is appreciated in cities like Paris and NYC. I once had an outfit on, and my Step-Father thought it was quite funny looking – as we walked down Madison, a man in a taxi had the taxi pull over, and asked me if I would appear in his boyfriend’s fashion show..”you are fierce”, he said to me. Validation baby!!

Fashion Notes: Leggings from REI, by North Face, Vintage GAP fanny pack, Tribal leather jacket, Chanel Bag, Elizabeth & James Tank

DSC_0288

Fashion Notes: Miu Miu bag (it’s so huge, I can’t find anything), Marc Jacobs jean skirt, Chloe top, Uniqlo puffy, Armani aviators

I basically re-wear the same things over and over – but try to mix things up, to not seem like such a repeater – but I do a terrible job. I’m a lover of bags and earrings, so that’s my way of making my look a little less boring.

I realize most of you aren’t running around in cropped shirts – and my style may be influenced by Miami – but style is about having fun – and NO JUDGMENTS!!

Fashion Designer Mama. Sexy in Halter Dresses.

unnamed-1

Rebecca Bruce. Designer. Mill Valley, California. September 2015.

See what happens when your kids play soccer? You meet fashion designer mothers, who have cool bikes, and look like models.

unnamed-3

Bay Area Fashion Designer and Mama, Rebecca Bruce has been designing ready-to-wear since 1986…Shown here in her own halter dress design.

Rebecca’s work has been showcased in film, on CNN, at SFMOMA’s ModernArt Ball and California’s Top Ten Designers Fusion Show in L.A. Including publications, The San Francisco Chronicle, Essence, W and Elle. Check out her work, http://www.rebeccabruce.com

unnamed-4

Rebecca has a showroom in Mill Valley, where you can try on her pieces and feel her imported fabrics, ranging from mohair to the finest wool and cashmere.

unnamed-2

I love how I look totally dorky wearing a helmet and leaning against my uncool bike – but Rebecca looks opposite.  A great mix of California laid back style infused with that Northern Cali outdoor style… she does it so well..

unnamed-6

Now that’s a gorgeous back. Rebecca is lucky, and she’s also a former model. Great Genes!! I never loved the way I look in a halter dress, so I especially admire women who can pull it off….WHY CAN’T I.. WHY!!!!!!!!!!  (a little funny?)

Philly Moms are So Haute. Sidewalk Style.

Philadelphia. June 2015.

What a great place to be in June – the streets are filled with people, cafes, stores and life. Philly is a great city that’s small, diverse and highly cultured. Music fills the streets and I got to capture some stylish parents on my day in Philly.

This young mom looks so cute with her accessories and great smile. The tattoos are oh so cool. Fringe bags are so hot now… look for them on every city block.

Cheap Dress, Two Ways. Mara’s Picks.

unnamed

Mara. Marin County. March 2015.

Fashion Notes: Dress: Urban Outfitters, Bag: Chanel, Heels: Pour la Victoire, www.pourlavictoire.com Jacket: Uniqlo, www.uniqlo.com/us/, Earrings: Door Knockers bought on Amazon

I bought this dress on the sale rack, when I walked into Urban Outfitters in search of a fanny pack that was out of stock on line – I wish this weren’t true. But it is – I still am into fanny packs. The dress was probably like $20, and I knew I could hook it up with amazing accessories. Clothing is fabric and is so easy to make stylish..all with accessories and a little creativity.

DSC_0034

I admit I don’t feel totally comfortable in these socks.  But it doesn’t stop me from showing you how to pull them off. This look with the heels is really something I would only wear at night, on the corner, looking for a date..I’m only kidding. My Bags and shoes are the most expensive part of this look.

DSC_0086

I suggest wearing a longer skirt to show a peak of skin between the socks and end of the skirt. This gap for me is fine, but if you want to show less skin – go for something right above the sock line.

DSC_0043

The jacket open.

DSC_0034

I’m more comfortable negotiating these socks pushed down with ankle boots. A long jacket is amazing over a short dress – it keeps things balanced. And in a city, with wind and walking – something needs to protect you from the dress/wind situation.

Fashion Notes: Dress: Urban Outfitters, Boots: The Frye Company, www.thefryecompany.com, Jean Jacket: Zara, www.zara.com, Sunglasses: Polaroid from Nordstrom, www.nordstrom.com

DSC_0063

And lowering the socks changes the entire look.

DSC_0032

I wear this combo day and night – fashion is exciting and can be outrageous. But no matter how much I love fashion, I tend to put on what feels most comfortable. I am not into feeling awkward and uncomfortable in my own skin for the sake of fashion.

Sunday was HAUTE. True Bohemian Style in Marin.

AB 1

Araceli. Marin County. February 2015.

Fashion Notes: I love the gold earrings paired with the gold aviators and petite necklaces.  Araceli unlike most people, can look great in silver and gold jewelry. Her long shiny tresses and glowing skin, add to her eclectic California style.

I first spotted Araceli in a yoga class. I was desparetly trying to look somewhat “California”, with my childhood throwback version of a back bend – let’s just say it didn’t look pretty.  In the front row, a gorgeous woman with tiny bracelets on her wrists and ankles did a back bend with style and grace. Later, I learned Araceli was a Yoga teacher..and I felt a little better about my lack of experience.

AB 2

Bohemian Sundays: It’s so nice to spend a Sunday with friends, while the kids run around outside, with absolutely no presence of technology.  With Abba playing in the background, this is a great example of the uniqueness of Northern California. Just hanging out talking about life, music and of course Seinfeld.

AB 4

How to Wear Crop-Tops: Yes, Araceli is in incredible shape – but the way she’s exposing a sliver of tummy, is a perfect way for all of us to rock a little crop-top situation.  She tied her Forever 21 blouse, www.forever21.com with the knot low, so you can’t see much.  And the high waisted vintage 1970’s skirt, makes everything stay put – meaning no possibility for a little skin rolls (she has none, but you get my point)

AB 3

A little more detail. Check out her gold studded sandals.

She Adorns the Famous and the Stylish. Haute Bobbie.

DSC_0060DSC_0083DSC_0056DSC_0064Bobbie. Jewelry Designer. Mom. Coconut Grove, Florida. January 2015.

Fashion Notes: Bobbie: Silk Lace Kimono: Soah, Funky Boho Heels: Ralph Lauren Collection, Jumpsuit: Hommage LA, Fringe Bag (I am obsessed): Purchased in Morocco, All Jewelry: Musa Chloe (Bobbie’s daughter): Dress: Urban Outfitters, Cardigan: Bought in a Vintage store in Europe, Socks: Urban Outfitters, Shoes: Thrift Store, Backpack: Kipling, Jewelry: Musa.  Bobbie’s style is very “Mara” – the bag I adore, and the layering of accessories – it’s like looking in a candy store..I want it all!! Including Bobbie’s glowing skin.  Chloe, Bobbie’s daughter adores thrift stores and searching for cool items to wear- she has a great sense of style..and I’m pretty sure I know where she got her initial inspiration.

Musa Jewelry: Bobbie’s company Musa, is the Spanish word for muse.  Musa pieces are not only funky, beautiful and stylish, but each piece has a special meaning and intention.  Bobbie’s designs include various gemstones and crystals, because of the healing powers of these stones.  Many of Musa’s collectors adorn the beads for pure spirituality, and some for pure body decoration :).

About Bobbie: A former magazine writer and stylist, Bobbie began collecting beads during her travels.  Bobbie’s natural bohemian style and sensibility, led her to create unique designs with a deeper meaning.  It’s all very California!  And I’ll tell you, Musa Jewelry has quite the A List following (I’m talking about me, of course).  Although, I’m not one to be impressed with celebrity fashion–I’m proud that Bobbie’s pieces are being appreciated by many majorly fashionable people.

Who’s Rockin’ Musa: Lenny Kravitz has been photographed wearing Musa’s black beads (so sexy on men), and apparently they fell off while he was crowd surfing at a show – -they were quickly replaced on the style icon’s wrist.  Uma Thurman, the Von Furstenberg Family (yes, as is Diane), Marie Chantal of Greece’s royal family and the Givenchy Family are all fans of Musa.  Donna Karan, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez all own pieces from Musa’s collection.  Diane Von Furstenberg’s bed became an impromptu pop-up shop for Musa Jewelry.

Mara. Marin County. 2014.

Fashion Notes: Top: Max Mara, Mini-Jean Skirt: Marc Jacobs, Handbag: Hazel, purchased in Spain, Chain Strap: taken from another bag to add a little Gold, Boots: Joan & David, Glasses: Polaroid, Bracelets: Shandi Levy Jewelry, Africa and Turkey, Earrings: hoops Target and Beaded Shandi Levy. Beaded Bracelet: Emporium Miami

Suggestions: Not everyone will wear such a short shirt – I get that. I actually think a long tank top looks great with a short jean skirt.  This look is pretty sexy, and not one that I would pull off going to pick up my kids from school.  I  would throw on my long jean jacket before walking through the gates.  If you live in a cold climate, wear tights or leggings to keep your legs warm, or over the knee socks and high boots. If it’s hot out, you can wear a jean skirt with converse, sandals or a heel at night – and throw on a long tank top and cool long bag.

Style Story: This Marc Jacobs jean skirt has been hidden away for years. I find being able to wear boots year round, gives me more clothing flexibility. This bag purchased in Barcelona is the coolest, and I added a gold chain from another bag as the strap.  It gives the bag more of a glamorous bohemian feel.  I am pretty sure I bought the boots at a Nordstrom Rack in Miami, I know Joan & David has re-invented themselves and are making some cool shoes. This shirt was a give-a-away from my mom.  Due to my impulsivity, I decided to cut the shirt myself – maybe I miss-judged the length 🙂 I’m wearing two large earrings in each ear – and lots of bracelets.  I love accessories, even if I jingle with every movement and annoy the living daylights out of most people who can hear….ummmm sorry.

Over the Knee Boots..

DSC_0220

Mara. Fall 2014. Marin County.

Fashion Notes: Skirt/Bag: Zara, Boots: Miss Sixty, Top: Isabel Marant

Please visit the brilliant and amazing,  www.thesartorialist.com for more images of over the knee boots. They’ve included different photos, some that are quite street and sexy.  I worship boots, they are more comfortable and add an edge. But with this sexy style, I tread lightly – the line is fine, and it’s one I don’t like crossing.

South Beach Drop-Off. Over the Knee Boots via Socks.

Mara’s Tips for Over the Knee Boots:  Wear boots over legging, jeans or with a skirt that’s like the one i’m wearing (maybe longer).  The key is to choose a skirt that loose, or a distressed jean skirt, which hits above the knee. I don’t recommend a tight skirt or dress.  Try a long blazer or cardigan on top, with a long strap bag -all will elongate your body.  A loose, short dress with a blazer or jean jacket also looks incredibly cool paired with over the knee boots.  The image below from The Sartorialist shows a great way to pair an over the knee boot during the day, she’s only showing a little leg, and the rest is 1970’s preppy.
