Harlow. San Rafael, California. October 2015.

It’s hard to find anyone who wears bigger gold hoops then me.. Harlow is pretty close, and with her great length hair – – -the earrings are front and center. Her baby even is wearing accessories.. (they may be Hindu beads, but still accessories)

“Haute Hippie” is a high end clothing company, which makes bohemian inspired clothing using beautiful fabrics.  Harlow is one Haute Hippie putting together her own bohemian look, using clothing & accessories from local Marin County (mostly Fairfax) stores.

High waisted skirts paired with black tops are very flattering…especially for moms!

Haute Mama on The Grateful Dead’s Baseball Field.

Fairfax

Meggan. Fairfax, California. May 2015.

This field is where The Grateful Dead used to play baseball with other musicians, here in the bohemian county of Marin.

Meggan grew up in the bohemian town of Fairfax, located in Marin County. She was raised by two New Yorkers, and lived in NYC for a long time – before moving back to her California roots. I can see the mix of NYC and Northern California in Meggan’s style – she looks like she’s strolling a flea market on a Sunday in the East Village.

Well, I love a good old Dooney & Bourke 1980’s pocketbook, what wasn’t even hip in the 80’s, has enjoyed a resurgence for at least 5 years.  I purchased a great Dooney & Bourke bucket bag at an Aspen thrift store for $25.00 about three years ago – what a score!!

Please excuse the garbage – kind of shocking that someone “littered”!!! A cropped cardigan is always a good staple in your wardrobe – especially in California climates.

Redheads have More FUN. Haute Baseball Drop-Off.

Fairfax, California. March 2015. Little League Kick Off Day.

Maybe redheads have more fun? I always can tell when a parent was also a model – they know how to pose and look at the camera.

This mama looks like she’s a member of the cast, a long side Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell, of the film League of Their Own.

Nancy 5

Nancy. Mom. Writer. Lawyer. Singer. New Yorker. February 2015. Marin County.

If you know me at all, you will know I’m a jean jacket freak, I have so many, but usually wear the same one on repeat for a month and switch to the next denim jacket perfection. One of the reasons I moved out of Miami, was so I could wear my jackets every day – oh and because my hair looks so good in California (I’m kidding).

Nancy is wearing an insane fringe jean jacket from the store Calypso, http://www.calypsostbarth.com  – Calypso has stores in several locations, Nancy purchased this bad boy at The Marin Country Mart..an outdoor shopping/eating spot with some seriously good and expensive stores, like Intermix, www.intermix.com

Nancy’s bag is a classic and funky Balenciaga “City” Bag. I always loved this Balenciaga pocketbook, http://www.balenciaga.com/, because it makes any look a little more urban cool.  When you are wearing work out clothing, this bag adds excitement to what can be boring.

Remember all this excitement, doesn’t come cheap.  Balenciaga handbags start at around $1,000. The best shoppers I know, aren’t rich – but they usually (unlike impulsive me) buy a few good pieces, and it’s worth the investment. I’ve never sold a bag before, but people have great success consigning designer handbags. And I’ve had great success buying used designer goods.

Nancy’s motorcycle boots are by Ash, www.ash.com – the same brand that designed my famous gold studded kicks.

Nancy is a writer, attorney and singer. I just saw her perform on stage singing an incredible version of Corinne Bailey Rae’s Like a Star.  Nancy is a New Yorker through and through, and now makes Marin County her home, with her family, including two young kids. When my kid’s music teacher told me about Nancy’s website, I immediately started stalking…I needed her as a friend, and it worked.  Check out Nancy’s take on living in the Bay Area, she gives great tips, shares some pretty deep stuff, and the not so deep.  www.nycgirlbythebay.com

Brooding Voice. Haute Musician Papa. Bohemian Drop-Off.

DSC_0074DSC_0033DSC_0025

Jeremy. Dad. Musician. Fairfax, California. January 2015.

If anyone could be a style poster child for Fairfax, a bohemian town in Marin County, California–Jeremy would be it. Jeremy has the soul of an artist, and now the soul of a daddy. Jeremy is a musician, playing guitar and singing in the band San Geronimo.  I first heard this band play at a bar, that to me, seemed like it had to be fake and on some movie set. But it wasn’t, this place called Rancho Nicasio is deep in Marin County, and feels like what my image of a 1960 rural hippie town would appear to be.  I even spotted an identical human replica of David Crosby.

Jeremy’s voice is brooding and captivating, but I’m not really a music critic.  What I do know, is that their version of Lyle Lovett’s If I had a Boat will touch you deeply..and make you fall in love with their sound. San Geronimo plays every Thursday at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, owned by famed Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh.  They’ve played at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, as well as many other Bay Area venues.  Click the link below, to check them out:

Haute Dads. Mara’s Style Tips for the Dudes.

unnamed-1

Ian. Dad. Chiropractor. Fairfax, California

I really like this photo – I realize Ian doesn’t look like a style icon (sorry Ian). But he has a cool look that I really appreciate. I’m a huge fan of low key male style – I like that Ian hasn’t “tried” too hard.

Like I’ve mentioned before, most dads in Marin County are in a band – were in a band or their the children of rock stars..so it tends to rub off on the overall fashion of this gorgeous part of the world.  And I dig it.

I think it doesn’t come easy to many men, especially ones thrust into fatherhood – to look cool.  I mean when you have to carry gear for toddlers, it’s tough.  But dads you have no excuse, you don’t need to leave your style in the past because you are a father – it just takes a tiny effort to look great.  Here are a few tips…

Summer Dude Tips:

Shoes:  Dudes you should have a great pair of kicks, like vans (no socks), a brown, vintage looking dressier shoe to wear with jeans – rummage through local vintage or consignment shops, you will score some amazing old school shoes – you can spray them “germ-a-phobes”.  Flip Flops: as simple as possible, I like brown leather thin strapped flip-flops.  And for the winter a cool pair of boots, I love a lace up, worn in black boot.

Jeans: This is a tough one. I say simple as possible, no labels or markings. And most importantly make sure it’s well fitted in the booty.  Bring a friend.

Shorts: Ian has it right..I also love cut off jean shorts, but this is risky territory if you are not a fashion maven…Just make sure they are obvious to the eye that they are cut off..this has to be messy – and not too short.

T-shirts:  Simple – please don’t wear athletic t-shirts outside of the gym.  If you are in shape, you can even get away with a tank top in darker colors only!! T-shirts could have names on it like bands etc… just stick to soft cotton.  And make sure the neck is not so high, don’t worry about your hairy chest peaking out- women like that – you are a man, we love to see that (as long as you are not wearing a huge gold chain)!!

Hats: Love them – baseball – school boy – that’s probably what you should choose from, the other options are a bit more complicated to pull off.

Haute Betty Rubble look-a-like..Fairfax Drop-Off is HOT!

unnamed

Fairfax Festival. Fairfax, California. June 2014.

I took some great shots at this festival all weekend, unfortunately I only had my iPhone.  This mom was in a huge rush, but I begged her to let me photograph her family in matching Leopard outfits..channeling Betty Rubble from The Flinstones.

Fairfax, California has a couple slogans, and one is “only in Fairfax”.  This is a community that is filled with free spirits, and it’s awesome because people are accepting and value individualism.  Unfortunately for me, my individualism is quickly halted by two kids with lots of opinions….

Love this photo..we should all have fun, take ourselves less seriously and rock a Betty Rubble look.

Haute Firefighter Papa. Fairfax Drop-Off.

DSC_1105

Giuliano. Dad. Firefighter. Fairfax, California. May 2014.

Giuliano grew up in San Francisco, and you can easily assess that – he surfs, mountain bikes, loves food and gave me a suggestion for a great local beer garden – where people take kids, usually on the backs of their very expensive bikes.

Fashion Notes: Giuliano has a look – it’s cool – the beard, ripped jeans rolled up, the chunky distressed leather belt and of course the amazing mountain bike shoes.  He’s Italian -American, and seems to reflect the European lifestyle well.
