Channeling Jessica Alba. Haute Jenny.

Jenny. Marin County. Summer 2017.

You all know the deal, I saw Jenny, she had an amazing jean jacket – and I had to hear her style story.

When I approached Jenny, who reminds me of Jessica Alba, she was a bit confused. As moms, especially with little kids, it’s hard to find time to urinate, let alone get dressed.. so her look, which I love, is organic. Jenny is stylish naturally, and probably got dressed in 10 minutes, to take her kid to story time before his morning nap.

It’s my duty as a human, and lover of people – to say, ya know what mama, you look damn good.

I love denim, always have with as much passion as an Aretha Franklin song (well, maybe not that much passion). Jenny’s jacket is so COOL, she added the patches herself. I’ve been re-furbishing jean jackets since I’m a kid, and it would be a dream to have a room in my house dedicated to re-making denim… Jenny did good work here.

New moms, can get lonely, it’s a weird and amazing time. You are surrounded by other parents via your kids, and it’s not always a match made in friendship heaven. But trust me, you’ll find your friends, I’ve made sisters and brothers by just being a parent, and having to ask if I could borrow a diaper after one of my kids had an explosion, and I forgot diapers. I made a friend, when I couldn’t unhook my kid from his car seat… we need to be good to each other, smile as much as we can and make our fuck ups public – so others let their walls down a bit.

These lounge pants are so in right now – which is such a pleasure. I know they aren’t tight & don’t show off your curves – but they are like heaven, when you just want to be comfortable – and they look cool.

Amazing, and Jenny is wearing her collar up!!

Is that a Grateful Dead patch? or a just a skull? I’m so surrounded by Grateful Dead culture, I must think all skulls have to do with the band. Love a white bag, it makes everything look funky.

Colombian Mamas make Miami SEXIER. Haute Drop-Off.

Miami. January 2015.

This is really how they do grunge in Colombia.  I mean the country Colombia.  This was taken at a kids jump place, called Sky Zone. I love how these women have taken the re-surfacing style of grunge, and paired ripped jeans with sexy tanks and designer belts/bags.  Miami is special in so many ways—-and it’s hard to leave the house without making an effort, because this is the norm.

Fashion Notes: Belts: Hermes and Moschino, Bags: Louis Vuitton and Chanel, Sneakers: Converse

Haute Malibu. Actor-Surfer-Cowboy-Cool Dad at Drop-Off.

unnamed-6Rodger Halston. Dad. Actor. Malibu, California. December 2014.

Fashion Notes: Rodger, Shoes: Clarks, Jeans: Levis, Flannel: Abercrombie, Vest: One Star, Sunglasses: Ray Ban. Avalon, Kicks: Converse, Jeans: Joe’s Jeans, Vest: Pop Out, Tank Top and Back Pack: Roxy

About: Rodger and family live in Malibu, where he takes advantage of the California life style.  His talents are abundant…. Actor, Musician, Singer, Surfer, Skateboarder, Cowboy, Writer, Producer, Director, Motivational Speaker and DAD.  I don’t know what it means to be a cowboy, but it sounds pretty fun.

Hair: I mean can this dad get any cooler? Rodger is a great looking dude, with major style and an awesome beard.  I have this beard style philosophy  – it can’t be neat or overly trimmed. A beard I like, is more free spirited in its presentation.  A little messy and unruly, but only slightly…Rodger has perfected my beard ideal. The long, straight hair reminds me of late 70’s folk rock hair…it just fits this dad well, and man is he lucky!

Style: I love the fitted vest with a little plaid peaking though – -and the thick wrist cuff.  A great example for men on how to wear accessories. The rolled sleeve is a great way to add some masculinity to any look – especially when its plaid.

Film: Below is a photo of Rodger from his upcoming Universal Pictures film, Scorpion King Quest for Power.  Check out this stylin’ dad in his new film coming out in January.

Head Scarf at Drop-Off. Chic Baby, Chic.

Lala. San Anselmo, California. October 2014.

I realize this photo is not the best quality, but I had to capture this mom’s style. And all I had was my old iPhone. Something about a head scarf and oversized glasses brings me to a happy place – a place filled with glamorous women, part bohemian 1970’s and part Italian bomb shell.. I guess it’s the Sophia Loren factor.

I’ve used scarves for skirts, tops, bras and for my head – my mom once made me wait in the car as a teen, because my scarf as a “shirt” was inappropriate to visit my uncle in the hospital… well, now i’m an adult, so I can wear my scarf as I please. And let me start with my head….

Haute Therapist Dad. Chattanooga Drop-Off.

John Lee. Chattanooga, Tennessee. September 2014.

Fashion Notes: Kicks: Converse. Jeans: Citizens of Humanity, Polo: Old Navy, Blazer: H&M

John Lee is a Therapist in Tennessee, and his lovely wife Kendra sent me this photo.  She loves her husband’s style, and I’m happy to feature a dad from Tennessee.  I’ve had hardly any parents from the Southern states on Haute Drop-Off.

I love the “old-school” uniform John’s daughter is wearing..I had one very similar.  I hated it back then, but now it’s looking pretty cute.

Fashion Notes: Kicks: Converse, Dress: Forever 21, Hoops: Wet Seal, Hat: Forever 21, Pink Lips: Wet and Wild, but Mac usually

Many kids on the West Coast haven’t started school – so Angelina was hanging at the Oakland Zoo with her adorable son.  When I spotted Angelina, I dropped everything, including my own kids, to take her photo.  She’s sexy and stylish – I love when I see moms who don’t give up on fashion after they have kids – Angelina is a make-up pro – her lips and eyes are amazing!!! Check out the close up.

Angelina told me the cheap lipstick actually lasts longer….

I always want to wear bright lipstick, but my son Neal has banned me from walking out of the house  with bright red lips – maybe I look like a clown?

Miami Drop-Off is So Haute. Spiky Boots. Cut off Denim.

Daniela. Mom. Fashion Designer. Miami. August 2014.

Daniela has been on Haute Drop-Off before – our kids attended the same school in Miami, so I had the pleasure of checking out her style most mornings and became quick friends..I mean I pretty much darted after her weekly, so it was just a “natural” connection!! I love her designs, and the soft fabrics feel so good against your skin.

Daniela’s clothing company, www.pureofheart.me was started after she finally let herself be herself – if that makes any sense. “I found myself feeling like I was in a cage, and separate from others,” she says. But it was through this self discovery, that Daniela created clothing with affirmations to remind herself and others to live their truth.

In addition to spreading hope through words and fashion, Pure of Heart remains aligned with its truth by using eco-friendly fabric. The 100-percent Tencel jersey is not only deliciously soft, but it is also completely biodegradable and good for the earth.

Fashion Notes: Boots: Sam Edelman, Top: Pure of Heart, Sunglasses: San Francisco Vintage store, Cut off’s: True Religion, Fringe Bag: Z&L

Daniela was just visiting San Francisco for work, and we got to have a fun night out.  We met at a bar at a friend’s record release party – I already looked out of place in a sea of black clothing, thick “hipster” glasses and Converse.

“Why did everyone look so much alike?”, I asked myself. And I was wearing a short, flared skirt, socks, ankle boots and lots of big earrings- I promise you, my legs were the only ones on display in this area of San Francisco.

I waited for Daniela and Nathalie to show up, and assumed it would be late – after all, in Miami everything starts late and I told them to meet me at 8:00 p.m. (that’s practically lunch time in Miami).  I was hoping they would balance out the place with their style..but when they finally arrived, they were covered up like it was Alaska – “When in Rome?”, I asked my friends, “No Mara, It’s freezing in San Francisco!”.

My point is different cities have different styles, and I get to see the specific city style when I take photos of parents. Daniela sent me this photo, as she was leaving to drop her daughters off at school. I love that in Miami, moms look like Shakira (well Daniela does) and look sexy and stylish – if Daniela wore this look in some other cities, she would get lots of looks – kind of like what I get sometimes.

Daniela is a great balancer – she knows how to look funky, sexy and fashionable .  The issue is some people “don’t get it”, they may not be into fashion, and see short shorts and heels, and think “inappropriate”, but all that matters is you guys “get it”…and that we can appreciate other people, and the way in which they express themselves artistically.

Haute Dads. Mara’s Style Tips for the Dudes.

unnamed-1

Ian. Dad. Chiropractor. Fairfax, California

I really like this photo – I realize Ian doesn’t look like a style icon (sorry Ian). But he has a cool look that I really appreciate. I’m a huge fan of low key male style – I like that Ian hasn’t “tried” too hard.

Like I’ve mentioned before, most dads in Marin County are in a band – were in a band or their the children of rock stars..so it tends to rub off on the overall fashion of this gorgeous part of the world.  And I dig it.

I think it doesn’t come easy to many men, especially ones thrust into fatherhood – to look cool.  I mean when you have to carry gear for toddlers, it’s tough.  But dads you have no excuse, you don’t need to leave your style in the past because you are a father – it just takes a tiny effort to look great.  Here are a few tips…

Summer Dude Tips:

Shoes:  Dudes you should have a great pair of kicks, like vans (no socks), a brown, vintage looking dressier shoe to wear with jeans – rummage through local vintage or consignment shops, you will score some amazing old school shoes – you can spray them “germ-a-phobes”.  Flip Flops: as simple as possible, I like brown leather thin strapped flip-flops.  And for the winter a cool pair of boots, I love a lace up, worn in black boot.

Jeans: This is a tough one. I say simple as possible, no labels or markings. And most importantly make sure it’s well fitted in the booty.  Bring a friend.

Shorts: Ian has it right..I also love cut off jean shorts, but this is risky territory if you are not a fashion maven…Just make sure they are obvious to the eye that they are cut off..this has to be messy – and not too short.

T-shirts:  Simple – please don’t wear athletic t-shirts outside of the gym.  If you are in shape, you can even get away with a tank top in darker colors only!! T-shirts could have names on it like bands etc… just stick to soft cotton.  And make sure the neck is not so high, don’t worry about your hairy chest peaking out- women like that – you are a man, we love to see that (as long as you are not wearing a huge gold chain)!!

Hats: Love them – baseball – school boy – that’s probably what you should choose from, the other options are a bit more complicated to pull off.
