I call it “sexy hippie”, or Coachella Style..

It’s Coachella time, so here are some Haute Drop-Off parents with looks that remind me of the style so prevalent during this music festival….

Glowing & Haute in Ojai. (and my attempt at “hippie”)

Sarah. Ojai, California. 2015.

A California mama in Ojai – relaxed, non-complicated, smiling…It’s all very California, even in the way Sarah is dressed – a floppy hat reminiscent of the 70’s, her shiny straight hair, striped fitted dress and an authentic smile… I’ll never look this easy breezy  – right?

There is a difference in style between LA, which is always on point, very sexy and laid back bohemian – but in places like Ojai and Joshua Tree, the style seems to be vintage, and the period 1970’s. I think it’s funny that when people visit Joshua Tree, they even pack like they are headed to a music festival or the original Woodstock.  I’ve attempted this look, but I always come out looking Miami.. like this:

I’m going to New York City tomorrow, and I haven’t packed – but I know, my suitcase will be filled with much more cool looking and funkier clothing then I wear in California. When I’m in NYC, I pull out my real style and feel like I can get away with anything – it’s so fun. This week I think I may even wear my Adidas high tops all day – and leave the heels at home. CRAAAAAZZZZYYYY!!

Naked & Free. Angela Izzo, Haute Human.

Angela. Videographer. Photographer. Creative Human. Pacific Palisades, CA. 2015.

Since I was young, I had this fantasy of joining a commune where I would experiment with hallacunegenics and travel with a group of my close friends on a re-vamped school bus. The fantasy continued like a W fashion editorial, where we would all be dressed in eccentric designs and I would be adorning the largest door knockers on my ears. When I stare at Angela’s photographs, my inner bohemian/urban/school bus fantasy comes to life.

In my early 20’s, I was a full on mother, with desperate breaks in between.  This usually consisted of an all nighter on South Beach, walking in the door and having to feed a baby or two. Or it would be an LA get-away visiting my brother, and dipping my toes back into the life before kids.

Many mothers would make comments about my “need” to let loose, with remarks like, “Mara, how can you want to go out that late anymore” or “haven’t you grown out of the desire to go out until 4:00 a.m.?”.  Feeling a bit out of place, because I knew my answer, a big fat NO!! I still haven’t “grown out” of wanting to be wild and free, and I hope I never do.

Members of The Chris Robinson Brotherhood. LA. 2015. Shot by Angela.

I met Angela at a Chris Robinson Brotherhood show in LA. We both stuck out in a sea of Tie Dye and “jam band” fashion.  With a camera on hand, and pink hair – I wondered who is this young, fresh face beauty, with an obvious love of all music? Angela’s creative energy captivated me, and we decided somehow we would have to collaborate.

Raised in New York, Angela has made Los Angeles home  – and is fully immersed in LA’s Art Scene..

Angela has an impressive resume.  Shooting musicians, celebrities, artists and interesting people, Angela has developed a reputation with her unique eye, and humble attitude. She thinks outside of the box, and her work is exciting, enticing and approachable.

Nude Photo Shoot. Pacific Palisades, California. 2015

I adore naked photographs. I know why.  The courage it takes for a person to expose themselves in obvious and not so obvious ways, means a great deal to the observer.  When Angela announced on Facebook that she was embarking an a nude photo series, the comments from her friends poured in, “I’m in”, “tell me where and when” etc.. I realized this group of friends were not all skinny, young things..they are creative souls who feel comfortable having Angela behind the camera.  I found myself wanting to be a part of this series, because I truly feel inspired by Angela’s work.

Angela’s images, www.izzoimages.com are not only gorgeous, but soulful and allow me to imagine a bohemian life filled with non-stop adventure and new experiences.  I try to lead this life, whether I have responsibilities or not and California has provided the landscape for so many to fulfill these adventures.

Look at this group- – I love the idea of using clothing to portray a time period you particularly love – even if you weren’t around to experience the decade. Music has such a heavy influence on who we become.. this is such a cool shot, and I wish I styled them!!

Sexy Tattoos. Little League is Haute.

Fairfax, California. March 2015.

I love these tattoos. They are stylish and really pretty to observe. Little league is hot! This was taken at the Little League baseball kick off in Fairfax.  It was a parade with floats, 1980’s music blasting and plenty of cool parents. The town is a throw back to the 1950’s – only with a hippie, bohemian vibe – that is special. This area is one of the most non-judgmental places I’ve ever lived – it has that community feeling without the constraints of traditional, conservative values.

This very pretty mama was watching her offspring in the parade, while I quickly snapped photos. Her tattoos are just pretty – and her look is reflective of her body art. I guess no matter what, this mom will always look stylish….I’ve wanted henna type tattoos on my hand for a while, but not sure I can deal with the permanence of a tattoo – What can I say? It’s hard to commit.

Sunday was HAUTE. True Bohemian Style in Marin.

AB 1

Araceli. Marin County. February 2015.

Fashion Notes: I love the gold earrings paired with the gold aviators and petite necklaces.  Araceli unlike most people, can look great in silver and gold jewelry. Her long shiny tresses and glowing skin, add to her eclectic California style.

I first spotted Araceli in a yoga class. I was desparetly trying to look somewhat “California”, with my childhood throwback version of a back bend – let’s just say it didn’t look pretty.  In the front row, a gorgeous woman with tiny bracelets on her wrists and ankles did a back bend with style and grace. Later, I learned Araceli was a Yoga teacher..and I felt a little better about my lack of experience.

AB 2

Bohemian Sundays: It’s so nice to spend a Sunday with friends, while the kids run around outside, with absolutely no presence of technology.  With Abba playing in the background, this is a great example of the uniqueness of Northern California. Just hanging out talking about life, music and of course Seinfeld.

AB 4

How to Wear Crop-Tops: Yes, Araceli is in incredible shape – but the way she’s exposing a sliver of tummy, is a perfect way for all of us to rock a little crop-top situation.  She tied her Forever 21 blouse, www.forever21.com with the knot low, so you can’t see much.  And the high waisted vintage 1970’s skirt, makes everything stay put – meaning no possibility for a little skin rolls (she has none, but you get my point)

AB 3

A little more detail. Check out her gold studded sandals.

Music Festival Haute. Hollen & Jen.

unnamed-5

I’ve loved vintage, when it was called “used”..At age 7, (ask my mom) I would jump for joy at the sight of hand me downs, like I had just won the lottery. Salvation Army – Goodwill – and upscale showrooms like Hollen & Jen have always been my happy places. So when in Miami for New Year’s Eve- I had the pleasure of being photographed in looks I found at Hollen & Jen Showroom – Designer Vintage…My Dream!!!

Being influenced by my new town and its bohemian nature – I decided to get in character and pretend I was finding looks for a week long music festival – ahhhhh that would be fun… So here ya go…My music festival editorial..

Photographer Cara called this “the Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks dress”. Perfect attire to see your favorite folk rock band on a beautiful night.  The gold leaf necklace gives the look a Grecian feel.  I think an empire waist flatters most figures – especially when you’re pregnant.  A favorite look used often in the 1970’s, empire waists have stood the test of time.

unnamed-8

This is my ode to the Olsen twins and Lisa Bonet. A favorite look i’ve had since my early days of second hand love-  layering using jackets and vests.  I’m not tall, so in reality, I would have to wear sky high heels to pull this off. And with larger breasts, it’s also really tough to wear non-fitted clothing – but again, I think this looks really cool. And another perfect music festival ensemble- one that’s not in the summer.

unnamed-11

I’ve been using belts as my automatic seamstress for years. This dress, I’ve shortened a good 8 inches – all with the magic of a 1980’s tie belt.  And the off the shoulder action, is only because the dress is a little loose on my frame.  Another benefit of vintage clothing, you really can re-design something for your body..just add a little creativity.

unnamed-2

Accessories and a great pair of jeans – and you can pull anything off.  Feeling funny about showing off your belly? Wear a long necklace with a huge heart to cover most of your belly.  These jeans fit so well.  They’re not tight where my skin goes over the top – which is not a great look when you are revealing your stomach.  Vintage stores have the best collection of jeans, you can find ones to flatter your body shape and they come already worn in!! I adore this white belt with the gold details and have been pulling it off with everything from dresses to leggings.  The fur wrap (I hope it’s faux, but we know it’s old) is great to add warmth and a little 1970’s action…. Heels are tough to wear at a music festival, but I’m not one to back out of a challenge 🙂

unnamed-3

This is not an outfit you can wear sitting on the grass..this mesh shirt looks so fly with the brown leather bomber. The earrings are long and gold – and show up in my wild mane. A tiny, mini skirt is not for everyone – sometimes when it’s denim, it seems more casual and less va va voom.  When I wear very short skirts, I wear boots – usually ankle.  Boots add an edge, and give you rock-n-roll, urban style.

Hollen & Jen Showroom carries an incredible collection of designer vintage – at pretty amazing prices.  Some people get high playing a guitar on stage or jumping out of an airplane, I get high in the presence of second hand clothing, where I can try on things from every generation.  Hollen & Jen have great taste, and can help you pick out the perfect look for a music festival or a South Beach night out – and guess what? No one will be wearing anything remotely like you- – that’s the beauty of vintage.  We’re all unique, and this type of shopping allows us to express our individuality in a fun and creative way.  http://www.hollenandjenshowroom.com

Fashion is Deep. Mara feeling Nostalgic at Drop-Off.

DSC_0236

Mara. San Rafael, California. October 2014.

Fashion Shot: Tiphani Palmer

As pretentious as it may sound, my clothing tells a story – I remember each piece and it brings back a memory.  Most likely, because I get excited when I find something cool..whether it’s at a fancy store, a flea market, Goodwill or my Mama’s closet. Because everyone is trying to replicate my style (ha ha), I get asked frequently, “Mara, where do you shop?” – it could be more, “Mara, where do you shop!!!” – the answer is everywhere..I don’t usually have an intention to buy clothing or accessories, it happens when I’m just out in daily life.

What i’m wearing in this photo is an example of my “multi-faceted” approach to fashion.  This sweater, knitted by my mother in the 1960’s is one of my favorite sweaters. And it happens to be “in” right now..I love that it’s fitted and has a preppy/hippie vibe – like I should be laying on the quad at Andover, watching my friends play Rugby. The bucket bag was purchased at a thrift store in Aspen for $25.00.  I remember that day so well, as I spotted this amazing find and made sure no one else beat me to the “bucket” bag. The boots, although a little big, are Miss Sixty purchased at a local consignment store in Marin County, awesomely named Sax.

Fashion is fun, unique, creative and deep – every time I wear this knitted sweater, I picture my beautiful mama with her long brown hair, and gorgeous lashes in the 1960’s knitting this sweater  -a sweater that one day her daughter would wear. See? Fashion bridges generations.

Fashion Notes: Skirt: Zara, Boots: Miss Sixty, Jewelry: beaded bracelet: Emporium Miami and earrings and bangles: Shandi Levy Jewelry, Sweater: My Mama, Handbag: Dooney&Bourke circa 1980’s and Aviators: Polaroid
