Make-Up at the Gym..like a lot of it

Bela. Marin County. May 2017.

I love Bela, she’s so real and doesn’t hide who she is. Ask any woman if they wear make-up to the gym, most will lie. Here’s my mini-interview with Bela, mom, make-up artist & a whole lot more:

Mara: “In your opinion, what’s the most essential item of make-up you need?”

Bela: “So I can’t just pick one, I feel every girl needs concealer, a touch of blush, defined brows, a little bit of eyeliner (although I cake it on) mascara and powder. My favorite translucent powder is Beauty Counter’s loose powder, it’s great for oily skin.”

Mara: “I’m crying of laughter, this is make-up you would use on a film set, or on Broadway!  And this is your normal, every day routine -So What about BB cream, oils, stuff that you can wear to the gym?”

Bela: “Mara, I mean let me be clear, I do FULL face all day, everyday, gym, no-gym, school drop-off or no school drop-off, EVERYDAY”

Mara: “Can I quote you verbatim on Haute Drop-Off”

Bela: “Hell yea”

Bela and I volunteered together, our job was to put make-up on women in a charity fashion show. The women who sat in my chair, came out looking like they were on serious drugs or they lost in a street fight.  Obviously, I tried to convince them of my theory that, “black and blue makes the eyes appear 20 years younger”, horrified because my lie wasn’t sinking in, I gave Bela the ‘save me’ look, and so she did. Bela dove in and fixed my terrible make-up job.  From then on, I knew she had my back -and we became quick friends.

A row of lower back stars.. and how about this delicious kid? Bela grew up in Southern California, and visits her brother in West Hollywood frequently – apparently, he also is head to toe G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S.

Sexy shoulders.

Loooong legs..and this gorgeous child was so fun and delicious.

I love Bela’s pop of tattoos  – you don’t know she has them – and then they just appear

yum.

Bela knows how to look good for the camera, and I think I should be her agent :).

Those low ankle boots are a 90’s throw back.. love them, flattering and make short cut-off’s look rock-n-roll…(do people still say that?)

When your mama has legs as long as a super model, you hold on to those things for support.

I always had friends much taller than me, it’s always a funny combination. It’s helpful to have tall friends for so many things, especially if you are trying to get the attention of a bartender. They ALWAYS see the tall people first, weird.

And as mothers, we can’t always pose for photographs – I mean, these kids want to do things, they want to climb  – I love how Bela’s holding her daughter’s faux fur jacket, so she can climb the play structure.

Megan is a repeat Haute Drop mama. Always looking fly this one….When I run into Megan, she knows that I’m going to beg her to let me take some shots. She always looks good, without that “I tried to look good” look.

Megan knows how to wear animal print ankle boots, without looking cheesy. Not everyone has that gift – paired with solid leggings, and casual bohemian accessories  – and it works so well.

I call it “sexy hippie”, or Coachella Style..

It’s Coachella time, so here are some Haute Drop-Off parents with looks that remind me of the style so prevalent during this music festival….

Music Festival Haute. Hollen & Jen.

I’ve loved vintage, when it was called “used”..At age 7, (ask my mom) I would jump for joy at the sight of hand me downs, like I had just won the lottery. Salvation Army – Goodwill – and upscale showrooms like Hollen & Jen have always been my happy places. So when in Miami for New Year’s Eve- I had the pleasure of being photographed in looks I found at Hollen & Jen Showroom – Designer Vintage…My Dream!!!

Being influenced by my new town and its bohemian nature – I decided to get in character and pretend I was finding looks for a week long music festival – ahhhhh that would be fun… So here ya go…My music festival editorial..

Photographer Cara called this “the Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks dress”. Perfect attire to see your favorite folk rock band on a beautiful night.  The gold leaf necklace gives the look a Grecian feel.  I think an empire waist flatters most figures – especially when you’re pregnant.  A favorite look used often in the 1970’s, empire waists have stood the test of time.

unnamed-8

This is my ode to the Olsen twins and Lisa Bonet. A favorite look i’ve had since my early days of second hand love-  layering using jackets and vests.  I’m not tall, so in reality, I would have to wear sky high heels to pull this off. And with larger breasts, it’s also really tough to wear non-fitted clothing – but again, I think this looks really cool. And another perfect music festival ensemble- one that’s not in the summer.

unnamed-11

I’ve been using belts as my automatic seamstress for years. This dress, I’ve shortened a good 8 inches – all with the magic of a 1980’s tie belt.  And the off the shoulder action, is only because the dress is a little loose on my frame.  Another benefit of vintage clothing, you really can re-design something for your body..just add a little creativity.

Accessories and a great pair of jeans – and you can pull anything off.  Feeling funny about showing off your belly? Wear a long necklace with a huge heart to cover most of your belly.  These jeans fit so well.  They’re not tight where my skin goes over the top – which is not a great look when you are revealing your stomach.  Vintage stores have the best collection of jeans, you can find ones to flatter your body shape and they come already worn in!! I adore this white belt with the gold details and have been pulling it off with everything from dresses to leggings.  The fur wrap (I hope it’s faux, but we know it’s old) is great to add warmth and a little 1970’s action…. Heels are tough to wear at a music festival, but I’m not one to back out of a challenge 🙂

unnamed-3

This is not an outfit you can wear sitting on the grass..this mesh shirt looks so fly with the brown leather bomber. The earrings are long and gold – and show up in my wild mane. A tiny, mini skirt is not for everyone – sometimes when it’s denim, it seems more casual and less va va voom.  When I wear very short skirts, I wear boots – usually ankle.  Boots add an edge, and give you rock-n-roll, urban style.

Hollen & Jen Showroom carries an incredible collection of designer vintage – at pretty amazing prices.  Some people get high playing a guitar on stage or jumping out of an airplane, I get high in the presence of second hand clothing, where I can try on things from every generation.  Hollen & Jen have great taste, and can help you pick out the perfect look for a music festival or a South Beach night out – and guess what? No one will be wearing anything remotely like you- – that’s the beauty of vintage.  We’re all unique, and this type of shopping allows us to express our individuality in a fun and creative way.  http://www.hollenandjenshowroom.com

Excuse the Face. I’m trying to look Good, it takes Concentration.

Mara. Marin County. 2014.

Fashion Notes: Top: Max Mara, Mini-Jean Skirt: Marc Jacobs, Handbag: Hazel, purchased in Spain, Chain Strap: taken from another bag to add a little Gold, Boots: Joan & David, Glasses: Polaroid, Bracelets: Shandi Levy Jewelry, Africa and Turkey, Earrings: hoops Target and Beaded Shandi Levy. Beaded Bracelet: Emporium Miami

Suggestions: Not everyone will wear such a short shirt – I get that. I actually think a long tank top looks great with a short jean skirt.  This look is pretty sexy, and not one that I would pull off going to pick up my kids from school.  I  would throw on my long jean jacket before walking through the gates.  If you live in a cold climate, wear tights or leggings to keep your legs warm, or over the knee socks and high boots. If it’s hot out, you can wear a jean skirt with converse, sandals or a heel at night – and throw on a long tank top and cool long bag.

Style Story: This Marc Jacobs jean skirt has been hidden away for years. I find being able to wear boots year round, gives me more clothing flexibility. This bag purchased in Barcelona is the coolest, and I added a gold chain from another bag as the strap.  It gives the bag more of a glamorous bohemian feel.  I am pretty sure I bought the boots at a Nordstrom Rack in Miami, I know Joan & David has re-invented themselves and are making some cool shoes. This shirt was a give-a-away from my mom.  Due to my impulsivity, I decided to cut the shirt myself – maybe I miss-judged the length 🙂 I’m wearing two large earrings in each ear – and lots of bracelets.  I love accessories, even if I jingle with every movement and annoy the living daylights out of most people who can hear….ummmm sorry.

Mara and “Cheesy” Jeans

DSC_0279

Mara. Marin County. October 2014.

Fashion Notes: Jeans: MOTHER, Top: Isabel Marant, Fringe Bag: Zara, Ankle Boots: BCBG, Cocktail Ring : Vintage, Paris. Cuff and Beaded Earrings: Shandi Levy Jewelry, Bangles: Turkey Street Market, Hoops: Target

When I bought these jeans off the sale rack in Aspen, my family said they saw the salesperson high five her co-worker..because according to these comedians, these “ugly” jeans were on sale for two years. My sister-in-law said they look great on me, especially the behind…so of course I bought them.  And I think I worked them out, what do you think?

I mixed the jeans with bohemian pieces to take away from any “cheesy” situation…the beat up ankle boots and hippie bag, all give the jeans a less harsh look.  My stomach looks more exposed here, but my belly button was covered  – the jeans are tight, so an exposed stomach is not the best bet with this shape.

Speaking of ankle boots, I get attached to the worn in look of my own, but they look dirty and “improper”, ya know the rule, no one should have scuffed heels…no, no, no!!  I think it’s time to find a good shoe maker in Marin County.

How to Show a Sliver of Tummy (without a 6-pack)

1908347_10152640302807573_7369179289957380791_n

We’ve all seen many celebrities of all ages sporting mid-drifts this year, I am telling you, most of us can pull off showing a sliver of skin…

So you want to show a little tummy? Here’s how you can do it, even if you are not in shape- high waisted skirt is key, and you can get one that’s a little tight to hold you in… You only need a little but of skin peaking and REMEMBER, self tanner is your friend.

Check out the distance between my skirt and top, so little, but it does the trick.

Haute Sarah Jessica Hair at Drop-Off

Amy. San Anselmo, California. January 2014.

Fashion Notes: Necklaces: J.Crew, Sweater and T-Shirt: James Perse, Jeans: Rich and Skinny, Belt: Target, Ankle Boots: Topshop

Amy’s hair is a great accessory, because it’s slightly wild and adds a sexy Sarah Jessica Parker vibe to her urban bohemian look. I just made that term up, and I like it!
