Little Venezuela: This photo was taken in Doral, an¬†area of Miami with an earned nick name of “Little Venezuela”, due to the large population of Venezuelans. ¬†Have you seen Venezuelan women? ¬†Venezuela is no stranger to beauty – besides the US, Venezuela dominates beauty pageants world-wide (I despise beauty pageants, but I’m making a point).

If you’ve seen Venezuelan women, that random statistic is not surprising. ¬†Occasionally (like maybe twice), when I lived in Miami, I was mistaken as Venezuelan. ¬†Usually, it was when I went overboard with my blonde highlights, but my ego would temporarily inflate (for maybe 5 minutes, and then I was back to my usual neurotic stuff).

Miami Mamas: Miami has so many cultural influences, and having a large Venezuelan population has only given us a “beauty nudge”, because they sure are making an effort – even on a Sunday at a kid’s birthday party spot.

Mara’s Personal Thoughts: And ya know what? I LOVE this about Miami. ¬†I know I’m such a repeater, but Miami mamas make a serious effort to look slamming. ¬†Many, many times it’s really annoying for some of us (me) who just want to roll out of bed, and look like a slob (even if I pretend it’s “throwback grunge”). ¬†But I thank these women, for giving me a little beauty push – we all know we feel better when we throw on jeans so tight we can’t breath, and heels so high we can’t walk. ¬†The beautiful Dolly Parton said it well, “When I’m feeling a little low, I put on my favorite high heels to stand a little taller.”.

Here is a link to a piece I wrote about Miami Mom Style, and my years growing up seeing these glamorous women dropping off my friends at school. ¬†Here’s the link:¬†http://blog.justaskboo.com/a-love-letter-to-miami-moms/

Music Festival Haute. Hollen & Jen.

unnamed-5

I’ve loved vintage, when it was called “used”..At age 7, (ask my mom) I would jump for joy at the sight of hand me downs, like I had just won the lottery. Salvation Army – Goodwill – and upscale showrooms like Hollen & Jen have always been my happy places. So when in Miami for New Year’s Eve- I had the pleasure of being photographed in looks I found at Hollen & Jen Showroom – Designer Vintage‚ĶMy Dream!!!

Being influenced by my new town and its bohemian nature РI decided to get in character and pretend I was finding looks for a week long music festival Рahhhhh that would be fun… So here ya go…My music festival editorial..

Photographer Cara called this “the Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks dress”. Perfect attire to see your favorite folk rock band on a beautiful night. ¬†The gold leaf necklace gives the look a Grecian feel. ¬†I think an empire waist flatters most figures – especially when you’re pregnant. ¬†A favorite look used often in the 1970’s, empire waists have stood the test of time.

unnamed-8

This is my ode to the Olsen twins and Lisa Bonet. A favorite look i’ve had since my early days of second hand love- ¬†layering using jackets and vests. ¬†I’m not tall, so in reality, I would have to wear sky high heels to pull this off. And with larger breasts, it’s also really tough to wear non-fitted clothing – but again, I think this looks really cool. And another perfect music festival ensemble- one that’s not in the summer.

unnamed-11

I’ve been using belts as my automatic seamstress for years. This dress, I’ve shortened a good 8 inches – all with the magic of a 1980’s tie belt. ¬†And the off the shoulder action, is only because the dress is a little loose on my frame. ¬†Another benefit of vintage clothing, you really can re-design something for your body..just add a little creativity.

unnamed-2

Accessories and a great pair of jeans – and you can pull anything off. ¬†Feeling funny about showing off your belly? Wear a long necklace with a huge heart to cover most of your belly. ¬†These jeans fit so well. ¬†They’re not tight where my skin goes over the top – which is not a great look when you are revealing your stomach. ¬†Vintage stores have the best collection of jeans, you can find ones to flatter your body shape and they come already worn in!! I adore this white belt with the gold details and have been pulling it off with everything from dresses to leggings. ¬†The fur wrap (I hope it’s faux, but we know it’s old) is great to add warmth and a little 1970’s action‚Ķ. Heels are tough to wear at a music festival, but I’m not one to back out of a challenge ūüôā

unnamed-3

This is not an outfit you can wear sitting on the grass..this mesh shirt looks so fly with the brown leather bomber. The earrings are long and gold – and show up in my wild mane. A tiny, mini skirt is not for everyone – sometimes when it’s denim, it seems more casual and less va va voom. ¬†When I wear very short skirts, I wear boots – usually ankle. ¬†Boots add an edge, and give you rock-n-roll, urban style.

Hollen & Jen Showroom carries an incredible collection of designer vintage – at pretty amazing prices. ¬†Some people get high playing a guitar on stage or jumping out of an airplane, I get high in the presence of second hand clothing, where I can try on things from every generation. ¬†Hollen & Jen have great taste, and can help you pick out the perfect look for a music festival or a South Beach night out – and guess what? No one will be wearing anything remotely like you- – that’s the beauty of vintage. ¬†We’re all unique, and this type of shopping allows us to express our individuality in a fun and creative way. ¬†http://www.hollenandjenshowroom.com

Pouty Lips at Drop-Off.

Michelle. Hairstylist. Mother. Miami, Florida. January 2015.

First of all, Michelle is awesome, and if In lived in Miami, I would force her to hang out with me. ¬†I make a “face” when I pose. ¬†My brother Seth, still talks about how when we would fight as kids, I would stare at my reflection in the mirror, to admire my various facial expressions. ¬†So Michelle’s pouty lip face makes me beyond happy.

This was the day in Miami when I spotted those very sexy Colombian moms. ¬†I admit to being a bit intimidated to ask for a photo. ¬†I mentioned my apprehension to Michelle, she looked at me and said, “I’ll do it”, and with some Spainglish conversation, the beauties posed without question.

Michelle’s bag is by Nicole Lee. ¬†With a belt, Michelle created an empire waist – which is very flattering and very 1970’s.

Mara Menachem, The Bill Cunningham of Parent Fashion

Well Guys, I’m pretty excited because this really authentic, cool and stylish Miami mama is giving me mad props (I know people don’t say that anymore, I’m bringing it back). ¬†Annhy is like many of my “sisters” who are proud of me, and show me off – usually it involves some weird dorky dance move. ¬†But Annhy who hardly knows me, has taken how embarrassingly describe Haute Drop-Off – usually in a low voice, to not get heels hurled in my direction, and vocalized it loudly. ¬†And I love her for that. We should all, including me, stop being so afraid of exaggerating our skills‚Ķ.Gosh Darn it, I am the Bill Cunningham for Parent Style, and soon enough, The New York Times will add me to their fashion section and my mother will be able to properly show me off.

So Annhy started a great blog, I mostly love it because she’s so honest and funny, and she’s a looker – which always helps. So enjoy this piece about your very own Mara, and read about why I feel guilty at Guilt Free Mom Moments,¬†http://fomib.com/2015/01/23/hooray-haute-drop-off/

Haute Fashion in Humid Climates. Miami Drop-Off.

DSC_0035DSC_0034Lisa. Coral Gables, Florida. December 2014.

Lisa always looks put together and does it in a natural way. ¬†This was a weekend morning and she’s sporting a long floral skirt that’s high waisted with a tight tank to show her naturally thin body. ¬†Her accessories are minimal, and I really like the addition of a few gold bangles. Miami is hot, and it’s hard to not wear cut off shorts every day – you kind of really have to think about your wardrobe from a “it’s hot as hell” perspective.

Lisa is currently raising these adorable little girls, while continuing her involvement in several Miami charities.  She and her family live on Miami Beach.

Colombian Mamas make Miami SEXIER. Haute Drop-Off.

Miami. January 2015.

This is really how they do grunge in Colombia. ¬†I mean the country Colombia. ¬†This was taken at a kids jump place, called Sky Zone. I love how these women have taken the re-surfacing style of grunge, and paired ripped jeans with sexy tanks and designer belts/bags. ¬†Miami is special in so many ways—-and it’s hard to leave the house without making an effort, because this is the norm.

Art Basel 2014. Images by THE Cara Bloch. Above photo not by Cara.

Miami in early December is the most fashion stimulating time to walk the Art Deco streets. ¬†Besides being the world’s premier international art show for modern and contemporary art, Art Basel’s presence creates the most amazing parties in the universe – hosted by the most glamorous and artsy. ¬†The Sagamore Hotel, Miami’s Art Hotel hosts an annual brunch during Art Basel, where art, fashion and food fuse together.

Cara Bloch, my friend and rock star photographer (I’m such a name dropper, I know – I’m just proud) documented Art Basel week, and the stylish brunch guests at The Sagamore.

Miami is such a fun city, and when the world comes for a visit during Art Basel..Miami residents make sure they have the time of their lives.  Enjoy the photos!!!

Love Letter to Miami Moms, The Original Haute Drop-Off’s.

“In high-school, my friend‚Äôs mother would pull up in a shiny Porsche convertible. Her seemingly effortless exit from the car brought teenage boys and me to a halt. Dressed in curve-hugging Dolce & Gabbana, this mother was, by anyone‚Äôs standard, a total knockout. She was sexy, stylish and didn‚Äôt look ‚Äúmom-like.‚ÄĚ

Miami Drop-Off is So Haute. Spiky Boots. Cut off Denim.

Daniela. Mom. Fashion Designer. Miami. August 2014.

Daniela has been on Haute Drop-Off before – our kids attended the same school in Miami, so I had the pleasure of checking out her style most mornings and became quick friends..I mean I pretty much darted after her weekly, so it was just a “natural” connection!! I love her designs, and the soft fabrics feel so good against your skin.

Daniela’s clothing company, www.pureofheart.me¬†was started after she finally let herself be herself – if that makes any sense. “I found myself feeling like I was in a cage, and separate from others,” she says. But it was through this self discovery, that Daniela created clothing with affirmations to remind herself and others to live their truth.

In addition to spreading hope through words and fashion, Pure of Heart remains aligned with its truth by using eco-friendly fabric. The 100-percent Tencel jersey is not only deliciously soft, but it is also completely biodegradable and good for the earth.

Fashion Notes: Boots: Sam Edelman, Top: Pure of Heart, Sunglasses: San Francisco Vintage store, Cut off’s: True Religion, Fringe Bag: Z&L

Daniela was just visiting San Francisco for work, and we got to have a fun night out. ¬†We met at a bar at a friend’s record release party – I already looked out of place in a sea of black clothing, thick “hipster” glasses and Converse.

“Why did everyone look so much alike?”, I asked myself. And I was wearing a short, flared skirt, socks, ankle boots and lots of big earrings- I promise you, my legs were the only ones on display in this area of San Francisco.

I waited for Daniela and Nathalie to show up, and assumed it would be late – after all, in Miami everything starts late and I told them to meet me at 8:00 p.m. (that’s practically lunch time in Miami). ¬†I was hoping they would balance out the place with their style..but when they finally arrived, they were covered up like it was Alaska – “When in Rome?”, I asked my friends, “No Mara, It’s freezing in San Francisco!”.

My point is different cities have different styles, and I get to see the specific city style when I take photos of parents. Daniela sent me this photo, as she was leaving to drop her daughters off at school. I love that in Miami, moms look like Shakira (well Daniela does) and look sexy and stylish – if Daniela wore this look in some other cities, she would get lots of looks – kind of like what I get sometimes.

Daniela is a great balancer – she knows how to look funky, sexy and fashionable . ¬†The issue is some people “don’t get it”, they may not be into fashion, and see short shorts and heels, and think “inappropriate”, but all that matters is you guys “get it”‚Ķand that we can appreciate other people, and the way in which they express themselves artistically.
