Denim Part Deux & This is no Britney/Justin circa 2001…

Denim on Denim. Canadian Tuxedo. Jean Suit. Denim Tuxedo. Whatever you call it, this is my style. I live in denim, always have. So what do you think, Hot or not? Here are so many photos of me (what? you had enough?) in another jean on jean look.. notice the different shades of denim and my accessories…it makes my denim suit look less “suit” and more funky and stylish.. nothing “polished” about this look at all.. which I like.

Fashion Notes: Jeans: 7 for all Mankind, Shoes: Proenza Schouler, Bag: 1970’s Coach re-furbished from Barney’s NY, Denim top: J.Crew (cut by me), Crop top: Zara, Glasses: Madewell

Here’s how to avoid the Britney/Justin 2001 jean tuxedo look, https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2015/apr/02/double-denim-is-back-in-fashion-and-this-is-how-to-wear-it-oz-stylewatch

In case you didn’t read my tips in my first post, here’s the key to pulling off, well really what I wear daily

Mix colors: I think it looks cooler to wear many different colors, like Joseph and his technicolor dream coat 🙂

Mix fabrics: so some denim is worn in and some denim is very dense.. it looks stylin’ to have all those fabrics blended. So a beat up jacket with holes paired with dark blue and stiff jeans.

Accessorize: Add color and/or lots of gold like me. Now that you are wearing all jean, throw some jewelry on and over do it..you can, believe me. Either silver or gold or a bright beaded necklace like I have from Colombia..go for it.

Bags/Shoes: Again, have fun here. You can get away with so much, like wearing high heels in bright red or white – especially if you are wearing jeans with holes. I love wearing a fancy bag like a Chanel or anything with gold hardware or even a fancy clutch with head to toe denim.. it gives cool style immediately. And it’s more fun to take something polished and make it a little less polished…

Opposites Attract: ..and the same works in regard to style. High/Low, Soft/Hard, Formal/Informal…

Men: You can pull this off so well, just make sure someone approves those jeans, must fit well, especially in the booty – although I kind of love a little sagging, if you can get away with it..throw on a cool jean jacket, maybe a beat up one, or a really dark denim paired with ripped jeans or an old denim work shirt.. you’ll stop traffic, believe me

This bag – -it’s so good!! But you can also change the entire look by wearing a bag with a lot more bling and/or logos.

Blue and gold look great together…

Denim on Denim. Haute or Not? HAUTE. Tips Here.

Ojai, California. July 2017.

Yes that’s a close up of my tushy.. my friend Eric Tabora took all these shots, and none of us noticed my jeans were missing a big patch..oops. The photos are in black and white, but I’m wearing all denim.. I’m a big believer in a denim tuxedo or Canadian Tuxedo or whatever you guys call it – it’s pretty much my uniform, denim is my favorite fabric, and always has been…

These shorts look like underwear, especially when the camera is lower. I know it’s hard to see what I’m wearing in the artsy black & white… but it’s all DENIM, even my top is denim…I’m kinda obsessed..here ya go:

Fashion Notes: Bag: vintage Coach from Barney’s, Shoes: from the vintage fair in Oakland, I cut them to make half boots, Shorts: old Levi’s, Top: Intermix, Glasses: Dries Van Noten

I’ve been making denim jackets, and my friends decided to photograph me wearing one during a fun vacation in Ojai. Nothing better then being with friends, singing, creating and laughing. And making people laugh, like here when my fringe got stuck on a cactus.

here are my tips to pulling off….

Mix colors: I think it looks cooler to wear many different colors, like Joseph and his technicolor dream coat 🙂

Haute Summer Style. Mara’s Take.

Summer 2017.

It’s hot outside, and style takes a little more work, or maybe less? With more skin showing, more neurotic insecurities come up – EVEN though I know how unimportant superficial insecurities are, they still scratch at me – But I tell myself several times a day, “Mara, stop being so boring & focusing on BS” – it usually works.

So here I’m mixing it up. As always, borrowing from my love of Brooklyn 90’s hip-hop style. Let’s break down my look:

Hair: Wavy and braided, Army Jacket: I cut it in half, it’s from a thrift store and it’s Jordache, I’m thinking 80’s, Bag: Vintage Gucci that belonged to my incredible Grandmother Sylvia, who had the best sense of humor, personality, wit, zest for life and a beauty that stopped those in her tracks. My mom bought her this bag, after she watched all four of us, I imagine a Gucci bag doesn’t equal the price of babysitting my wild siblings and me. I wear this bag, and it’s more than a fancy bag, it’s my grandma who’s keeping me company. Shorts: They are short, I got them at Free People, not many stores here in Marin County, I liked the color. Nails: Pointy, white, gold and so high maintenance. Earrings: Oscar de la Renta chandelier earrings, from Neiman Marcus and personalized door knockers, which already broke!!! Denim tank: cut by me, bought maybe at Intermix, Choker: bought this at a tiny thrift store in Marin County for maybe $5

The Gucci bag is longer than my shorts…. of course!

I mean it’s hard to wear heels with short shorts, but the way I mix it up – it’s a little funky and cool – not so sexy.

I’m happy with my hair, it covers me when I’m feeling shy..and it always makes me look so funky.

LOVE this!! It’s so me. I use scissors to cut my clothing, and it never comes out even.

It’s okay to wear the same color from top to bottom – especially when the shades don’t match exactly

These $130 Sweats make my Butt look Weird…

Marin County. May 2017.

So, I’m going to show you how I wear sweatpants.  I style them in a way that represents my style: imperfect, funky & disheveled . When I wear them, I use a lot of accessories to balance out how unflattering they are to a women’s body.

You guys have heard me wonder out loud, “how the hell did I pay $130 for these sweats?” – but considering they serve as sleep wear and day wear, I got a pretty good deal on these bad boys..

I have so much going on here, let’s begin with the labels

Leg Warmers: Target, Flats: Chanel, Sweats: Free City https://freecitysupershop.com, Bag: Urban Zen https://www.urbanzen.com (Donna Karan’s Urban Zen), Denim shirt (cut unevenly by me): Holding Horses, Personalized Door Knockers: https://melodyehsani.com Top: Adidas, Sunglasses: Made Well (they already broke!)

Donna Karan’s Urban Zen is the designers website bringing together her favorite things – The items are carefully sourced, made ethically and usually go toward supporting a worthwhile cause. This bag is enormous  – it fits my laptop, camera etc.. it was a gift for my mother, but after someone nearly tripped on the fringe, she mailed it back to me.

So let’s talk. I’m always half way between just working out and going to get my kids from school. Often, I question the point of showering and getting dressed at all, when the people I see are usually sitting at a coffee shop staring into their laptops. Sometimes, I miss the challenge of living someplace where everyones style game is on point – because then I want to step it up.

I love being comfortable. Believe me, I wear these sweats to sleep and in public. Here’s how I make them look less doubty.. I wear this to spinning class, I just throw my flats in the locker and switch to the spinning shoes. Yoga and spinning are perfect workouts for people who hate ugly sneakers…. like me!!

My butt looks terrible in these sweats. I’m posting this angle to explain that for me, at least, comfort is sometimes more important.. I know, shocking.

Told you the bag is huge!! Good thing about being short, is you can get away with wearing ridiculously big bags- It wasn’t the Olsen twins who started that trend – but I’ll make the reference.

Leg warmers are accessories for your feet and legs, they can take a simple look, and make it funky or make you feel like you are ready to dance on stage.

And that’s my dorky face..

She’s Denim, She’s Acid Wash, She’s Perfect.

I’m officially having a love affair with a denim jacket. It sat in a Saks box for at least a week before I made the commitment. It wasn’t cheap, and if I see this Alice + Olivia Chloe jacket on sale, I will retaliate :).

I researched, I looked around, I scoured vintage stores for specific acid wash jackets – but I had to go fancy, and I had to pay retail. I even tried on a Marc Jacobs black worn-in denim jacket, and like all things Marc Jacobs – it looked terrible on my body type.  And I wanted to support my fellow Jewish brother, but it wasn’t made to fit the short, but curvy. Marc – -come on, remember your Jewish sisters and their body types!

And so, a brand I never was really into – seemed to get my attention, https://www.aliceandolivia.com  – the jacket, named “the Chloe embellished jacket” is now part of the Mara Menachem ridiculous jean jacket collection or coalition. I hear the 1960’s studded jacket is leading a revolt, apparently, I am not an equal opportunity wearer (not funny?).

That Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia is in a real creative flow – she has been making some seriously cool threads, and I’m watching.  Check out her bell bottoms, don’t know how they fit in the booty – but they look slamming on the mannequin.

The Chloe jacket (wish it had a different name, Chloe is just so obvious) has beaded pins in various places of things like lady bugs and butterflies. My issue: I’m such a repeater, so don’t make me feel bad for wearing it every day – because I will. And I will document it, so please be understanding.

Weird face here.. but Dries Van Noten made these John Lennon glasses. I love them, picked them up in LA at the Off Fifth outlet – always the best place to get designer glasses. Oh and I did just get my nails done – – a little black in Spring.

I wear my Ash moccasins unzipped  -it’s a new thing. Okay, fine – it’s not new, it’s because I get blisters – so I go unzipped. Calves made by genetics and Cycle Bar – they keep getting bigger.

This bag is one of a kind. I bought it at the Oakland vintage fair, it makes me look cooler, and I like to mix this 70’s bag with other decades, like the 80’s and 90’s. To me, when you dress in one period, it comes off as “I’m going to a costume party”.

I agree the dress is too short – that was more of a hemming mistake (i.e. scissors)..

Well, I was just having a good hair day – can’t a woman be proud of her locks?

I Keep on Truckin’ in Door Knockers & Chanel

DSC_0037

April 2017. Somewhere in California…..Keep on Truckin’

Love the patches, especially since I now live in Grateful Dead country, and that’s an original patch – little did anyone know, it would be worn with stilettos and a large classic Chanel bag.

DSC_0028

This 70’s jean jacket was hiding in between two vintage hawaiian shirts at the vintage flea market in Oakland. You would think I won the lottery, I was so excited – – -and for $70.00, it was mine. Oversized, original patches, perfect color and rips in all the right places – I landed on vintage denim perfection. Sunglass are from Madewell, www.madewell.com

DSC_0032

These amazing door knockers are personalized with my name – from Melody Ehsani, https://melodyehsani.com and my chandelier earrings are from Neiman Marcus by Oscar de la Renta

DSC_0043

My heels are from the Off Fifth, the Saks Fifth Avenue outlet store – they were maybe $20. The sun dress was also a random and very inexpensive find. Most people, would say it’s really a top!! The bag, Chanel – not inexpensive, but I like to think of it as an “investment” piece, investment in my style 🙂

DSC_0058

The oversized jean jacket, makes a mini-dress seem more comfortable. I can wear it open or hide behind the bagginess.

Seeeeee I can hide under this huge jacket!

After this Post, I know I look better in Skinny Jeans

DSC_0111

I call this my Neil Diamond jacket. When I wear it, I get a lot of stares. Some people don’t know what to say because it’s so loud, so Las Vegas. Here’s how I take a jacket that may be considered tacky, and make it ultra-cool (well, in my opinion). It’s vintage, I say late 70’s, maybe 80’s.  I’ve worn this to school drop-off and nearly tripped down the driveway, bell bottoms and wedges take serious walking skills.

DSC_0124

I’m a lover of a denim suit, all different shades and years, from new to old. Shredded tank is from Intermix, www.intermix.com High waisted pants, can be flattering when you want to show a sliver of skin – no one can tell if the skin is flabby, it’s an eye trick.

DSC_0113

Learn from my mistakes, wear higher heels with bell bottoms or hem them. I’m lazy and unless someone comes to my house to hem my clothing, I never do it – or I wait until I have an event the next day, and I’m in desperate mode. Wide leg/bell bottoms are from Free People, www.freepeople.com

DSC_0134

This clutch was a gift from my mom’s friend, most likely from the 70’s. I see them all over these days – grab them when you see them at flea markets or Goodwill.

DSC_0125

Even though I have long legs, skinny jeans look better on me. I love a flattering pair of bell bottoms, but sometimes I feel like it’s too much – almost like I’m wearing a costume. That’s why mixing this Neil Diamond like jacket, makes this look less costume party and more about personal style – or maybe I’m just cheesy!!

DSC_0131

I’m thinking I should make these cut offs, kind of loving how these Free People jeans fit from behind. Not because I look so great, but the way the butt is designed, makes it flattering for most bodies. As you girls know, this is not always the case when trying on jeans. Any jeans that are baggy and comfortable, make your butt look non-existent – believe me, I know – I’m wearing a pair now.

It’s all about ME..HAUTE

Me. Fall 2016. Marin County, California.

This necklace is from Laura Kimpton, her large instillations may be found at Burning Man, and she has a retail store in the bohemian town of Fairfax, California. Louis Vuitton is also making gold initial necklaces, $480 each. See below from In Style Magazine,

“Gold-finished” meaning not real gold

I can’t remember where I bought this shearling jacket, but it was used and I knew it was a seriously amazing find. My psychic style powers told me that shearling was going to be huge again – and I was right. I love this jacket, but it’s a little bulky and boxy. Shearling can have a luxury, designer look, a downtown NYC look, a mountain, preppy LL.Bean look or even a bohemian 70’s look..depending on the jacket and how you style it.

Seen here on me is my 90’s style – reminds me of Mary J. Blige and the street style of Jennifer Lopez, and Hip-Hop artists in NYC during that period. I took an American Apparel strapless one piece, and cut it  – it’s a little crooked (I never cut in a straight line).

My enormous Louis Vuitton Speedy bag, which is really sold as luggage. I bought these Timberlands at Century 21 in NYC…

Does this braid make me look a little bohemian?

Paige Denim, love these jeans – not sure if I love the way my butt looks..but they are comfortable and not skin tight.

Haute Temporary Butt Implants…

unnamed

I decided to be a Kardashian for Halloween.  We all know, it was just an excuse for me to stuff pull ups in my jeans, and finally get to exist in society with an impressive backside. I promise you I’m deep and soulful, but I have many sides, and one includes me clicking on a You Tube video explaining how to achieve a larger butt by utilizing pull ups.

Pull Ups, as you know are used as night time diapers for kids  – they aren’t cheap, I remember. But lucky for me, my friend Amy kindly lent me some – organic even! The first night I wore them, they worked – it was very hard to use the bathroom and re-stuff my self in a small bathroom at a party – I did look very lumpy by the middle of the night. I suggest you use tight, but stretchy jeans.

At the Halloween Party, people were staring at me – especially females – I knew they were wondering if I had implants, but they also know that Marin County is not Miami. It was pretty clear, after a few bathroom visits, and not placing the pull ups correctly that I was smuggling something in my jeans, and it didn’t look pretty.

Here’s the link to the video, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uXcqw0Gjq4E

Get my Look above: 6 pull ups, Zara heels, Gap Skinny jeans, H&M bomber jacket, gold hoops, Chanel bag, braids and lots of eyeliner.

My little Axl Rose, Liam wanted a Slash side kick, but not many 10 year old kids want to dress up like Slash.

dsc_0112

I had to switch to high top Adidas, and my enormous Louis Vuitton Speedy bag to carry my camera and candy (I like candy) when we went trick-or-treating.  Look at my butt profile – impressive, huh?

dsc_0124

Liam is the only member of my family who will pose with me for my blog, or any social media.. Please say the kid continues to help his mama out 🙂

But all in all, after much serious research, It’s conclusive, blondes don’t have more fun, but those who stuff their jeans with Pull Ups, actually have the most fun….

REI saved my Chanel Bag, & more Deep Thoughts….

unnamed-1

Napa County. California. October 2016. Soccer Tournament.

When we first moved to Marin County three years ago, my son joined a traveling soccer team. I showed up to practices in my “Miami Glam” look, and learned quickly that the weather at games and practices require practical dressing. Being practical has never been my “thing”, but the other soccer moms openly accepted me, and continually (three years later) take care of me, in all weather conditions. But besides that, we’ve developed  friendships and bonds while watching our kids play.

I don’t like to show off about kids, but these amazing parents are always telling me positive things about my kid’s soccer skills, I always say I can’t reciprocate, because I have no idea what to even say, it’s the other soccer moms who point out when Neal does some amazing move – and I later tell him things like “Neal, awesome hat trick” – to which, he says “yea mom, and describe what that is?”

unnamed-2

Here I am today, watching the game in the pouring rain.  Shannon, my friend who is organized and efficient – she’s married to a rock star photographer and spent her life being the practical one, in a world of artists. So Shannon runs back to her car, and provides all of us with some shelter from the rain.

Because she rules, Shannon grabs my Chanel bag, and holds it on her lap. It’s being protected by rain equipment from REI.  Because of this, I would like to I formally thank REI and its outdoor material engineers for creating products that protect designer handbags. I’m sure that’s what the material designers had in mind when creating REI’s outdoor equipment. No matter, they did a great job.

unnamed-4

Shannon and my Chanel Bag..

My point in all this writing – is that as the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah approaches, I’m reflecting more than my usual neurotic self. I feel so grateful, for the little things – like watching my kid play soccer, and feeling the pouring rain on my body. I’m amazed at how accepting humanity can be…in my hippie home of Marin County, my soccer mom friends find something shallow like protecting my Chanel bag in the rain, funny and don’t judge.

unnamed-3

We all enjoyed life this morning, we laughed, smiled and watched our kids kick a ball around. And I looked down at my phone after the game, with a text from my mama, “So grateful for having you”…. Happy and Healthy New Year!!
